    Trent where the company is building the brand new Scientia Academy primary school Visitors had the opportunity to tour the Burton development meet the construction team and find out about industry careers The state of the art Academy is being built by Seddon for Staffordshire County Council and Entrust Sponsored by the REAch2 Raising Educational Achievement for Children Academy Trust it will accommodate 420 pupils helping meet the demand for more primary school places locally The Scientia Academy events formed part of a national Open Doors weekend organised by leading industry bodies the UK Contractors Group Chartered Institute of Building the Considerate Constructors Scheme and training organisation CITB Visitors to the Burton development included Scientia Academy pupils who were able to look round their future new school building as well as meet Seddon company ambassador Seddy Bear Teenaged students from Balaam Wood Academy Birmingham and The Nuneaton Academy Nuneaton also visited the development Balaam Wood Academy deputy head Liz Davis says The visit was a great success and extremely well organised as well as a tour of the new Academy in hard hats and high visibility vests pupils were set a challenge to design create and sell their own housing village to the Seddon team Pupils presented their ideas and were given feedback and the winning team won 50 vouchers The pupils loved the day and have learnt about the different jobs in the construction industry The company were superb with the pupils and so many people gave up their time to inspire them they can t wait to come back Visits included a presentation from the project team about the Scientia Academy project and a tour of the development focusing on the technical innovations being used and the different construction tradespeople working on the new building The tour also

    not ready to work in the industry at the end of their course Seddon which doesn t believe the Richards Review proposals for changing the apprenticeship system will work for the construction sector has come up with its own potential solution The company wants to work more closely with colleges by providing paid work placements for students which would enable them to develop the industry experience needed to be job ready However the colleges it has already approached with the idea do not feel this would benefit them as it would affect their funding Nicola Hodkinson director of business services for Seddon says We are not unhappy that the colleges should get money for training people But for us the issue is that if we take someone on from a college course they are not job ready It s not a question of someone joining us and finishing their training on site we are effectively having to start from scratch with them An alternative would be to actually start funding the industry for training not just the colleges Our solution was to speak to a number of colleges offering to provide paid work placements which would allow students to work towards gaining NVQ qualifications something which colleges do not deliver as part of the Construction Diploma qualification For us the young person being trained should be the number one priority At a time when the industry is shouting about a skills shortage thousands of young people on college courses are stagnating and are not ready to get jobs We would be interested in knowing how many finish their college course and then go on to work in the industry This is something that the colleges can t or won t tell us Yet it s the industry that will be

    been chosen for a 1 3 million project to extend Clifton Primary School in Balsall Heath Birmingham Clifton Primary graded as Outstanding by Ofsted for the second time in May 2013 is a National Support School and centre of excellence To accommodate an increase in pupil numbers in the area it began a programme of expansion in 2011 Seddon has just started work on the refurbishment of the old Key Stage 1 building and is building a new extension alongside this The development will transform the old classrooms and hall into a bright and spacious Early Years Foundation stage building for three to five year olds Once completed the refurbished building will be able to comfortably accommodate up to 120 children in the nursery and a further 120 children in the four reception classes In addition the new build will provide a hall with Sports England recommended dimensions dining facilities a training facility plus other offices cloakrooms and utility rooms The extension will have a brick base with wall cladding and render in blue and green to complement the Key Stage 1 building which was completed in January 2012 It will also feature a sustainable sedum living roof The building programme set to be completed in March 2014 includes internal refurbishment work and the conversion of an existing car park into a play area for the nursery A replacement car park will be created and there will be improvements to the site boundary at Brunswick Road with new fencing and planting Seddon business unit manager Richard Sapcote says We re delighted to be working with Clifton Primary School to help create these modern educational facilities for pupils and teaching staff Our team has a strong track record in the education sector and we will be working closely with the school
