    a three day renovation programme by Seddon at the popular wrestling club one of Britain s oldest in Wigan Road Seddon carried out a range of redecoration work to the reception area and main wrestling room including plastering repairs and repainting after responding to an appeal from the club for help Craig Pilling one of the club s coaches says We originally renovated the building in the 1980s but it needs some updating Grants aren t available for this kind of work and although we could have funded the redecoration ourselves we wouldn t have been able to afford to do it to a very high standard We re a community club and reinvest all our funds back into the club so to get this support from Seddon is a massive boost for us The club has around 50 junior wrestlers aged between four and 18 as well as 25 senior members In addition its facilities are used by members of the public for fitness and weight training Originally founded in the 1920s the club bought its present home the former Deane Congressional Church Hall in 1985 Seddon provided a team of tradespeople to redecorate the club with materials provided free of charge by building materials supplier Jewson The apprentices aged 16 and 21 helped with the painting of the main wrestling room and reception area The new recruits trainee painters plumbers joiners and a bricklayer have been taken on through the large scale recruitment drive launched by Seddon to mark its 75th anniversary of training apprentices The recruitment drive saw a bumper crop of applicants 1 400 for just 75 places Seddon Construction managing director Jonathan Seddon says Our new apprentices have been through a tough selection process and we re delighted to welcome them to the business and

    Trust amongst others Contractors Seddon Construction began work in January 2012 on the restoration scheme designed by Alwyn Jones Architects for the Grade II listed Institute and Grade II listed Memo Work proposed so far through the phased restoration includes an extensive internal refurbishment scheme for the Institute On the ground floor Seddon will create a state of the art Information Resource Centre which is set to be leased to Caerphilly County Borough Council On the first floor are multipurpose community rooms including a function room meeting rooms and a Royal Air Forces Association office The construction team is also working on the new extension which links the two buildings and provides a new main entrance to the complex as well as a staff office new WCs and two passenger lifts They will now complete the installation of the slate roof and carry out brick and stonework repairs and cleaning to the building s exterior with the first phase of the restoration due to be completed in December 2012 Howard Stone chair of the Memo Trustees says This event is a milestone in what has been a nine year endeavour to restore these wonderful buildings They were originally built by the huge efforts and small contributions of the local miners somewhere that the local community could meet and enjoy the facilities provided It should be recognised that the efforts of today s community volunteers are following this ethos Through their dedicated work and together with the support of the various funding bodies and our partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council Newbridge will once again have a superb facility restored and run by the local community volunteers Cllr Harry Andrews Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council comments We are delighted to be working so closely alongside the Memo Trustees to bring
