    and my opinion is that black hats do lots of very dodgy stuff when it comes to on page optimisation as well as off page optimisation If you ever go to an SEO pitch most companies will tell you that they don t do black hat SEO They may explain that this is techniques like putting lots of words on pages in white writing to fool search engines and what they do is pure white hat Don t believe a word of this talk Black hats don t do this kind of stuff because it doesn t work Here s a very small list of typical black hat practices Hacking websites to inject backlinks without the webmaster knowing Cloaking pages so that visitors and search engine spiders see a completely different page I m sure that most SEO companies don t use techniques like I ve listed above So when they say they don t use black hat techniques that doesn t mean they are as pure as the driven snow They most probably are grey hats OK so Grey hat SEO what is that My definition is that grey hat is ANYTHING in between the 2 extremes The problem with totally white hat SEO is that it is very difficult in certain niches The aim of a white hat is to build amazing content that people with websites will be queuing up to link to This is great for big brands but what if you own a mobile toilet cleaning company for example I really don t think many people are going to want to link to your website with its amazing toilet cleaning content The other problem with white hat SEO is that it takes lots of time creativity and money to do properly In the meantime the grey hats are outranking you using their spam techniques For small business SEO this can be a problem as small businesses are often competing against big brands with even bigger budgets The risk with grey hat is that if search engines decide they don t like what the SEO Company has done they may put a ranking penalty on your website and you will lose your rankings Thus it s often a matter of risk tolerance for the client Grey hat techniques can and do work but you risk losing your rankings completely in an update This happened quite recently when Google penalised lots of websites using link farms So what is the best way The slow and steady long road is always the best SEO strategy in my opinion Grey hat techniques can work in the short term but if you are trying to build a long term sustainable business with people reliant on the business for their income and jobs it s far better to stick to search engine guidelines and use ethical techniques This is especially true if you want to look at local SEO White hat SEO is also much better because at its core it
