  • DUK says nine out of 10 parents unaware of type 1 symptoms | Shoot Up or Put Up
sure every healthcare professional understands that a child with any of the 4 Ts needs to be tested for Type 1 diabetes immediately The pop singer Amelia Lily who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was three years old is backing the 4 Ts campaign She said I feel very strongly that every parent and carer needs to know about Diabetes UK s 4 Ts campaign My symptoms included drinking a lot more than normal and going to the toilet a lot I was very lucky as my nana realised what was wrong with me because my uncle had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 14 It s so important that anyone who looks after children not just parents but teachers carers and other family members knows how to spot the signs of diabetes So many children are still getting really poorly before they are diagnosed and I want to help put a stop to that The nine per cent figure is the percentage of parents who can identify all four of the 4Ts of Type 1 diabetes Awareness of the individual symptoms is Excessive thirst 58 per cent Thirsty Tiredness lack of energy 57 per cent Tired Frequently passing urine 38 per cent Toilet Weight loss 28 per cent Thinner Diabetic ketoacidosis DKA happens when the body is unable to break down glucose because there isn t enough insulin Instead it breaks down fat as an alternative source of fuel This causes a build up of a by product called ketones This can lead to coma and even death About 500 of the 2 000 children who develop Type 1 diabetes in the UK every year have DKA by the time they are diagnosed Share on social blah Click to share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Click to share on Google Opens in new window Related Category news Tags duk news About Neville the Newshound Posting the latest diabetes news from the comfort of my basket Woof View all posts by Neville the Newshound Post navigation World Diabetes Day Weeks 13 14 insulin requirements nosedive 6 thoughts on DUK says nine out of 10 parents unaware of type 1 symptoms brian 14 November 2012 I wonder about the potential effectiveness of this campaign apart from raising concern amongst the general population which in IMHO is not good things to do but so many medical charities seem to have the knack of doing it perhaps it deliberate Doing the maths stay with me people 12 million under 16 s 2001 census 2011 census is too complex for me to deal with 2000 diagnosed pa 25 000 GPs Therefore on average a GP will see an undiagnosed diabetic child every 12 5 yrs ie 25 000 2000 Probably two or maybe three in a GP s full length career On average a parent will see an undiagnosed diabetic child every 6000 yrs 12 million 2000 Clearly

  • C8 non invasive CGM gains CE Mark approval | Shoot Up or Put Up
C8 non invasive CGM gains CE Mark approval Nig 31 October 2012 Thanks neville Having read your post I went to their website and read all their blurb then signed up to be kept informed about further news and also asking the obvious questions when how much any chance of the NHS paying for it I have just received a remarkably swift response which I am sure they won t mind me sharing the important bits Our intention is to launch the product in the United Kingdom first and we are expecting to have the product on sale this year in the UK The C8 MediSensors monitor costs 4 000 and is enginered to last at least four years That compares to invasive continuous glucose monitors which can average 3 000 5 000 each year depending on how many disposable sensors you use No prescription is required As a new device the C8 MediSensors monitor is not currently covered by insurance So at todays exchange rate of 1GBP 1 61259USD that would be 2 480 or as more often seems to be the case with US tech 1GBP 1USD giving 4 000 Interesting I translate the American the C8 MediSensors monitor is not currently covered by insurance as meaning the NHS haven t heard of it yet so you ve got no chance in British English Log in to Reply Nig 1 November 2012 Oops OK I ve just read the 03 09 2012 blog post from alison and realised that my breaking news is just a bit out of date Just shows I must come here more often to avoid looking so ignorant Log in to Reply Alison 1 November 2012 Or maybe more helpful bloggers would have updated the original post too so anyone reading it would know
