  • From student to staff member - Ross becomes part of the team - Shropshire Business Today
this subject had always interested me and it would give me the ability to communicate with a deaf friend The range of subjects offered by TCAT gave me the opportunity to continue my studies to the next level and I went on to enrol on the Deaf Awareness course in Whitchurch in January this year This was another 10 week course and really cemented my decision to learn sign language to the highest level I could reach Ross began looking around for job opportunities which would combine his previous customer service experience with his new qualifications and the answer was quite literally on his doorstep After discussing a few administration positions in local schools an opportunity came up to apply for a temporary position at TCAT within the Learner Services team which I successfully secured I have now been employed since August 2015 now on a permanent basis Ross is now combining his job with studying British Sign Language Level 1 at TCAT and plans to complete Level 2 next year I hope to use my new skills on a daily basis to help students talk to and communicate with someone who knows sign language when they need to come into Learner Services As a mature student studying at TCAT has given me the confidence to think about a career change as well as giving me the ability to believe in myself and return to the workplace I would highly recommend anyone to consider enrolling on a part time course at TCAT Ross was supported by the college s community outreach worker Andy Dowdall who said Ross is a perfect example of someone who has followed his goals He is at the start of a long and prosperous journey into the world of sign language and is a professional individual
