broadcasting she has again turned to her first love I always loved writing I love words and the origins of words so I love the process of finding the exact words I need to describe what I want to say I also enjoy empathising with my imagined readers and aiming to strike a chord with their hopes and fears insecurities and ambitions Sue left university with a view of becoming a newspaper reporter and instead found herself at London s Capital Radio before moving over to the BBC While there she presented Nationwide Breakfast Time Children in Need and Crimewatch After an illustrious twenty year career Sue made the decision in 2004 to return to writing I decided if I was going to get anything written I d better get my skates on I was lucky to get a two book deal with Headline and from then on I became a writer who broadcasts occasionally instead of the other way round Back with pen in hand Sue like so many other authors found the real challenge was in the promotion of her books I had been under the sad delusion that having sweated blood and tears writing your books the publishers would then make sure they were displayed prominently on the nation s bookshelves and the sales figures would come rolling in I had no idea that writing the book was only the half of it With that revelation Sue decided that she wanted provide a resource for aspiring authors I thought it would be good to share my experiences and to make some programmes about how agents publishers and booksellers decide which authors to support and what form their support might take So Sue combined her love for writing with her experience in broadcasting creating The Write Lines With

in Hyde Park on 26 July So it was appropriate to be involved in celebratory walks here in Bristol On 7 July I led a guided walk around Clifton looking at sites connected with the militant campaign Then on 21 July 2013 I was a guest speaker on a Walk for Women which celebrated the achievements of a number of amazing Bristol women including the suffrage campaigners First in the battle The Suffrage Pilgrimage celebrations were also marked by a panel event at Bristol M Shed on 13 July Senseless outrages against property I was joined by June Hannam Professor Emerita at the University of the West of England Lois Bibbings Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Bristol and Dawn Dyer of the Local Studies Team at Bristol Central Library with Wendy Larner of the University of Bristol in the chair We considered the question of whether suffragette militancy helped or hindered the campaign for the right to vote and if the arson and bombing campaign was justified Many of these events were part of the Dreadnought South West project commemorating the south west s contribution to the 1913 Suffrage Pilgrimage You can find out more about the project and the Pilgrimage at dreadnoughtsouthwest org uk A wider morrow There s more suffrage activity to come Having given a talk about the Bristol suffragettes at Colston s School on 15 June I am planning to visit other Bristol schools during the next academic year I m particularly keen to engage with educational projects partly because working with young people is so rewarding but also because I believe it s important that women s history is made visible I ll also be appearing at Havant Literary Festival on 6 October when I will give a talk about suffragettes before
