    new ship also called Sally Albatross reappearing in 1992 In 1994 she grounded whilst on a cruise suffering major damage After repairs she was chartered to Norwegian Cruise Line NCL as the Leeward The Baltic cruise market had been hit badly by the Estonia disaster in September 1994 In 1999 the charter was transferred to NCL s owners Star Cruises for service in the Far East as SuperStar Taurus The charter was terminated by Star Cruises in 2002 and she returned to her owners Silja Line for service as Silja Opera Silja Opera was not part of the sale of Silja Line to Tallink in 2006 and she remained laid up at Tilbury for much of that year A complete history of this ship is available on this link Norwegian Cruise Line postcard of Leeward Norwegian Cruise Line postcard of Leeward Norwegian Cruise Line postcard of Leeward Norwegian Cruise Line postcard of Leeward Norwegian Star 1 1996 Norwegian Star 1 was originally built as the Royal Viking Line cruise ship Royal Viking Sea in 1973 Royal Viking Line were acquired by Kloster NCL in 1984 and initially retained their separate identity Royal Viking Sea was transferred to Royal Cruise Line in 1993 as the Royal Odyssey II The Royal Viking Line name was sold to Cunard in 1994 Royal Odyssey was transferred into the main NCL fleet in 1996 as Norwegian Star She briefly operated for the NCL subsidiary Norwegian Capricorn Line in the Australian market and in 2001 was part of the Star Cruises fleet After a period laid up as Crown she was placed on weekly cruises from Valencia as Crown Mare Nostrum for Spanish Cruise Line by this time owned by the Dutch Cruise Club From 2005 she is running as the Albatros 2 for Phoenix Reisen replacing the Albatros 1 previously Sylvania Fairwind Sitmar Fairwind and Dawn Princess which was sold for scrap by owners V Ships Official oversized Norwegian Cruise Line card Official oversized Norwegian Cruise Line card An official Norwegian Capricorn Line card An official postcard of Norwegian Star in Star Cruises colours Star Cruises postcard of Norwegian Star I Scan Ken Murayama Click to open larger images in new window Seaward NCL 1988 1997 Norwegian Sea NCL 1997 2005 Norwegian Sea was built by Wartsila in 1988 as Seaward 42276 gross tons 216metres in length and 1798 maximum passengers Seaward was renamed Norwegian Sea in 1997 In 2005 she was transferred to the Star Cruises fleet as SuperStar Libra 2 Complete history of Norwegian Sea Seaward appeared in the new blue colours before she was renamed Norwegian Sea as shown in the oversized card below A later oversized card as renamed Norwegian Sea The two official NCL standard sized postcards as Norwegian Sea below were issued in 2000 Oversized Freestyle Cruising postcard of Norwegian Sea An oversized official postcard of Norwegian Sea showing the revised blue logo Norwegian Crown Crown Odyssey was built by Meyer of Papenburg and was delivered to Royal Cruise

    Naples and Genoa At the time of delivery she was the fastest American built liner achieving over 26 knots additional calls were added to the itinerary Algeciras Cannes etc and the voyages were increasingly advertised as 21 day cruises during the 1960s In 1959 both ships received major refits including the the move of their bridges further forward and upwards In 1960 the Isbrandtsen Company acquired a controlling interest in American Export Lines and in 1962 the name was changed to the unwieldy American Export and Isbrandtsen Lines Jet aircraft union problems plus competition from newer Italia Line ships made the services uneconomic and Independence was withdrawn from Atlantic service in 1967 followed by sistership Constitution the following year In 1968 Independence received a garish psychedelic livery and ran cruises for travel agents called Fugazi to the West Indies and Mediterranean but these were not a success I do not have a postcard of Independence in these psychedelic colours If you can assist please email simplon simplon co uk To digress the name Fugazi puzzled me since there is also a post punk rock band with this name The website www acronymfinder com says that this is a British military acronym for Fouled Up Got Ambushed Zipped In Independence was laid up until 1974 when she was sold to the C Y Tung group and renamed Oceanic Independence She was briefly used for cruising but then laid up in Hong Kong as Sea Luck I from 1976 American Hawaii Cruises were formed in 1980 by C Y Tung who wished to enter the American cruise scene The service started using Sea Luck I again renamed Oceanic Independence on 7th June 1980 operating a 7 day cruise out of Honolulu An American subsidiary had been created allowing the ship to be US flagged The service was a success and the sistership Constitution joined the service in 1982 following a substantial refurbishment During the winter of 1983 Oceanic Independence also received internal refurbishment returning to service under original name Independence In 1987 the cruise line was bought from the C Y Tung group by Peter C R Huang for 20million American Hawaii Cruises filed for bankruptcy in 2001 following poor trading in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks Independence was laid up in San Francisco She was bought by Norwegian Cruise Line in 2003 with the suggestion that she might be restored as a US flag cruise ship but she remained untouched at San Francisco at the end of 2007 In 2008 she was towed out of San Francisco presumed to be destined for the breakers Complete history of Independence Independence in drydock at San Francisco Photo Marvin Jensen January 2006 Independence in drydock at San Francisco Photo Marvin Jensen January 2006 Norwegian Spirit NCL 2004 78583gt 268 6 m long 1966 Pax 3760 max Meyer Werft No 646 Norwegian Spirit was previously the SuperStar Leo of Star Cruises owners of NCL An NCL postcard of Norwegian Spirit Click to
