  • Xenon Therapy - SLE
London Hospitals to help develop this potential new therapy Asphyxia related brain injury is a leading cause of childhood mortality and lifelong disability Researchers have found that the initial event of asphyxia sets up a cascading self sustaining molecular mechanism that leads to brain injury The brain may initially appear to have recovered from asphyxia but the cascading effect does that a more severe injury starts to occur in the hours that follow Imperial College and University College Hospital London has commissioned SLE to develop a special xenon gas delivery system for its ventilators The device has been authorised for a clinical trial involving the use of xenon gas as a neuroprotector in newborns that have suffered asphyxiation during birth The trial seeks to prove that intervention with xenon gas ventilation can help block the cascade mechanism and thereby prevent brain injury Xenon gas is very scarce in nature and therefore expensive to concentrate The new research device uses a closed circuit breathing system that works in combination with a standard ventilator Although patients have been admitted to the trial numbers eligible for its application are low and it will be years before any meaningful results are known SLE is working closely with clinicians to fine tune the hardware for potential future products Initial feedback from Professor Denis Azzopardi on a limited neonatal population of 14 full term infants has shown positive feedback on the anticonvulsant effects of xenon on neonatal asphyxial seizures A paper published in the Archives of Diseases in Children Fetal Neonatal Edition online in April concludes that inhaled Xenon may be a valuable new therapy in this hard to treat population Facts Asphyxia accounts for 23 of the 4 million annual global neonatal deaths Incidence of death or severe disability after hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is 1
