  • Joinery Company and Director Fined for Safety Failings | Alcumus SM&MS
    firm and a company director have been fined for multiple safety breaches that put employees at risk Park Royal based Sunbeam Wood Works Ltd and Stephen Morrison were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive HSE after an inspection on 10 February this year identified a number of serious issues Westminster Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday 27 November that the company had failed to test ventilation systems for extracting potentially harmful wood dust failed to provide suitable respiratory protective equipment RPE controls or any health surveillance for employees working with hazardous spray paints failed to control noise exposure failed to provide adequate information training and supervision to protect workers from hazards including inhaling chemicals such as isocyanate during spraying processes Two Improvement Notices were served requiring action to be taken to stop health and safety from being compromised and to protect workers undertaking hazardous activities However a follow up inspection in April revealed both were ignored The court was told that little had changed and that there were still serious faults Sunbeam Wood Works Ltd of Sunbeam Road Park Royal NW10 was fined a total of 24 000 and ordered to pay 1 460 in costs after pleading guilty to

    list of specified injuries The existing schedule of 47 types of industrial diseases are replaced with eight categories of reportable work related illness Fewer types of dangerous occurrence now require reporting The changes which come into force from October 2013 affect all employers including small to medium sized businesses and the self employed Safety Failings Led To Fractured Skull For New Worker A Driffield roofing company has appeared in court for safety failings after a young worker suffered a fractured skull just weeks after starting work with the company The worker was one of four employees installing solar panels on the roof of a farm in Tibthorpe East Yorkshire when he fell through a roof light and hit the concrete floor three metres below He suffered a fractured skull and temporary partial hearing loss but has since made a good recovery and returned to work The court was told that the firm had considered the risks and provided a scaffold and crawling boards on the outside of the farm building but had failed to act to adequately prevent a fall or to provide safety measures inside the building for example safety nets or a scaffold to mitigate the effects of a fall The company from Driffield East Yorkshire was fined 9 000 and ordered to pay 10 000 in costs after pleading guilty to a breach of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 HSE statistics show that 40 workers were killed and more than 3 400 were seriously injured in falls from height in 2011 12 What is the minimum temperature in the workplace It is that time of year when workers ask How cold does it have to be before I can go home The law does not actually state a minimum temperature but the temperature in workrooms should

  • Recycling Firm and Director Sentenced for Safety Risks to Workers | Alcumus SM&MS
    posted in Health Safety News on 20 10 2013 by Hannah Archer A Corby recycling firm have been fined and its director given a suspended jail sentence for endangering workers after allowing them to operate fork lift trucks without proper training and then ignoring a notice requiring urgent action to address the safety failing Northampton Magistrates Court heard yesterday 17 October that despite an Improvement Notice being served by the Health and Safety Executive HSE against BB Recycling on 29 November 2011 the necessary training was continually overlooked even after a deadline to comply was extended until 28 February 2012 The company and director Russell Wayne Armer were also found to have no employer s liability insurance which is compulsory for all employers BB Recycling of Pilot Road Corby was fined a total of 300 and ordered to pay 340 in costs after pleading guilty to single breaches of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Employers Liability Compulsory Insurance Act 1969 Director Russell Wayne Armer of Furlong Street Desborough Northamptonshire also pleaded guilty to the same three breaches He was given a fourth month prison sentence

  • New Penalties for Non-Emergency Lift Rescues | Alcumus SM&MS
    same building in a twelve month period Londoners were consulted on the new rules and they were agreed as part of the fifth London Safety Plan Since November 2009 firefighters have attended around 7 400 fewer lift releases a year equivalent to 2 million of the Brigade s time and resources But new figures show that last year fire crews in London still attended a total of 6 430 lift rescues around 17 each day The Brigade still wants to be called when there is a genuine emergency but less than one per cent just 57 of the nearly 6 500 lift rescues last year were medical cases To highlight the problem the brigade has released the top ten worst offenders for non emergency calls to people stuck in lifts The number one building was a block of flats on Thurlow Street in Walworth in south east London where last year firefighters were called once a fortnight to deal with somebody trapped inside a lift Although the number of lift releases has halved since the brigade s introduction of cost recovery and call filtering in November 2009 the Brigade believes the number of unnecessary call outs is still too high The chairman of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority James Cleverly said It is encouraging to see a reduction in lift call outs however firefighters are still attending 17 lift rescues each day We hope this tough new charging scheme will send a clear message to building owners that this is not acceptable As well as being costly for the fire service being trapped in a lift can be frightening and uncomfortable which is why we re calling on building owners to take responsibility and sort their shoddy lifts out Firefighters will always attend a call out where it
