  • The 'London' Shipwreck | Southend Museum
    The London on 8 March 1665 Built in Chatham in 1656 for the Cromwellian Navy The London was one of just three completed wooden Second Rate Large Ships of the ten ordered for the Anglo Dutch War built between 1642 1660 and the only one now surviving Now lying in two parts off of the end of Southend on Sea Pier The London played a significant role in British history In an attempt to end the anarchy following the death of Oliver Cromwell the London formed part of an English squadron sent in 1658 to collect Charles II and restore him to his throne The London s illustrious career as the flagship of the maverick admiral Sir John Lawson was cut short on the 7th March 1665 when she blew up at her anchorage at the Nore near Southend on Sea in Essex the traditional fleet assembly point in the Thames Estuary Various theories abound as to the cause of the explosion the most popular of which being that the accident may have been caused as sailors reloaded old cartridge papers with gunpowder An initial recovery attempt later that same year saw men descending in a diving bell to retrieve some of the more valuable items of the time In 2005 during works in advance of the London Gateway Port development in Thurrock Essex The London was rediscovered Subsequently in October of 2008 it was designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973 and immediately placed on Historic England s Heritage at Risk Register due to its fragile archaeological remains being exposed by shifting sediment levels on the sea bed Throughout the course of 2014 2015 Historic England has commissioned Cotswold Archaeology to carry out an underwater excavation in order to find out just how much archaeological material survives Divers

  • National Jazz Archive opens new department in Southend Museums | Southend Museum
    5pm on Saturday 6th February 2016 with a celebration to launch the facility There will be conducted tours of the research collections and museum exhibits including the trumpets of Louis Armstrong Nat Gonella and Humphrey Lyttelton extensive papers from Humphrey Lyttelton and Sir John Dankworth s first piano There will be music playing all day with a live session headed by tenor saxophonist Simon Spillett at 3pm Simon will also host showings of the new DVD about the great saxophonist Tubby Hayes A Man in a Hurry at 1pm and 2pm times to be confirmed The National Jazz Archive Southend will then be open to the public from 10am to 5pm on Saturdays Planned features in the future include A research collection of books and periodicals Supporting collections of recorded jazz and interviews with jazz musicians Facilities for internet research and liaison with the Archive s headquarters at Loughton Essex Travelling and in house exhibitions of jazz art and artefacts Displays of instruments and jazz memorabilia The Archive hopes to recruit more volunteers to supplement its existing team and to secure funding so that it can further expand its activities Cllr Mrs Mary Betson Executive Councillor for Enterprise Tourism Economic Development said Our aspiration as an authority is to cement our position as the leading hub for culture in the East of England so attracting the National Jazz Archive is another great coup for the Borough Culture is not only critical for our continued ability to draw tourists to our town and shores but also makes an enormous contribution to the wellbeing of our residents That s why the Council was keen to support the National Jazz Archive in their hunt for more space for expansion and why I m delighted to be able to welcome the Archive to a

  • Beauty and the Beach - Now On Tour | Southend Museum
    Now On Tour Swimwear from 1940 1969 Now available to hire at your Venue This exhibition explores the style design and inspiration of women s swimwear during the 1940s 50s and 60s Through the display of bathing suits two pieces and bikinis the exhibition highlights the changing shape and coverage of swimwear alongside our changing attitudes towards the body With the heyday of the English seaside holiday and the increasing accessibility of overseas travel swimwear production gained momentum during this time The development of new fibres with stretchy shiny and water resistant qualities allowed swimwear design to become more adventurous and embellished than ever before During these three decades swimwear changed dramatically in its structure coverage and associations What started out as sturdy garments designed to hold everything in push everything up and flatten everything out ended as a few bits of flimsy fabric that signified a change in both fashion and culture This is a touring exhibition funded by Arts Council England and is now available to hire Please email museums southend gov uk or call 01702 212511 for more information about hiring the exhibition Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for upcoming details of the Beauty and the
