    post course support to maximise your return on investment Effective Change Management November 17 2015 November 17 2015 At work major failures and other crises situations are followed by an investigation which tries to find out what went wrong and what changes are needed to prevent whatever it was happening again The problem is that all too often the recommendations of these investigations are not implemented so the situation that caused the problem happens again Why does this happen There are three areas that need to be addressed for effective change management 1 The Approach Used During the Initial Investigation When something goes wrong it is all too easy to fall into the person centred investigation approach by asking who did it and so looking for people to blame for the problem However most serious incidents involve system failures not just human failures If the management team fail to use the systems investigation approach by asking what organisational conditions allowed this problem to happen then their investigation will reach the wrong conclusions 2 Identifying the Related Causes of the Problem In an investigation it is easy to identify the obvious cause of the problem but there may also be a number of reasons this obvious cause arose If these contributing factors are not fully understood then the wrong conclusions can be reached and the issue is likely to happen again 3 The Right Change Management Process Any basic textbook on managing change will tell you that you have to appoint a project manager communicate to the stakeholders to get their buy in and address any resistance These are all good processes What the textbook doesn t say is Send out a report on the changes you want and your team will implement them But that is all too often what
