  • SportsAble was great in the first few years of my career particularly I felt really well supported and received help with funding equipment To be a top class archer you need top class bows and arrows and I was able to get those thanks to the club SportsAble helped me to enter tournaments as well but the main reason I joined was to get coaching from Ray Fields Prior to joining SportsAble in 1992 I competed in the 1992 Barcelona Games I looked around and noticed that all the other archers had coaches and when I returned I got in touch with Ray I have many memories of my four Paralympic Games I suppose that the first one Barcelona stands out the most because the opening ceremony was unlike anything I d been a part of before I didn t know anything about the Paralympics before then and to enter a stadium full of 70 000 people was an enormous shock but a very pleasant one The Sydney Games were probably the most meaningful I d had some surgery in 1999 and didn t think I was up to making the squad but I did and came away with two silver medals The Aussies take their sport very seriously and were very supportive of us It was a wonderful experience When you go to the Paralympics it s like you re part of this great big family The atmosphere is incredible I ve been to many World and European Championships but there is something special about the team GB spirit at the Paralympics Plus you are representing your country which is an enormous privilege What inspires me is knowing that I could always do better I always have something else to be working towards and that drives me Also taking part in Paralympic Games is a very humbling experience Some competitors are very disabled and yet are such amazing athletes and it is inspiring to be around them Also you owe it to all the people who have had an input in your training and everything that you do so you do the best that you can for them as well I don t think I ve got to my best yet and that keeps me going To athletes just starting out I would say have a dream but before you go down that route write everything down Write down the steps you ve got to take to get to county level national level and so on Nothing is impossible Be determined and committed and have absolute dedication to your sport It takes an awful lot of effort but it s worth it Kathy Critchlow Smith Five time Paralympian and Patron of SportsAble More about Archery at SportsAble Ask John Greaves Archery Section Coach at SportsAble what he is most proud of and he will say it is the fact that everyone at SportsAble supports each other in the enjoyment of sport He is also proud of the fact that

  • when I moved into my own flat I realised the need to have somewhere to go and so decided to see what the club could offer me As I had spent quite a few years in hospital a lot of my friends had drifted away and so I was looking for a new way to socialise with people I am a member of Air Weapons and Wheelchair Basketball teams I can only relate to playing football for Maidenhead Boys when I was at school but the coaching is of a much higher standard at Sportsable and typically has a much better structure to it SportsAble is also unique in its ability to supply a social element alongside the sports with use of the bar after sessions I really enjoy playing Wheelchair Basketball as I played football a lot before my disability and it gives me the opportunity to play a team sport again There is a good bond within the team which is something I enjoy I also enjoy shooting but for very different reasons It gives me the opportunity to be competitive with myself and I am constantly striving to be more consistent with my results I shoot in the Middlesex Air Rifle competition There are summer and winter leagues SportsAble has completely changed my life Before SportsAble I was in complete denial about my disability but since joining the club I have learnt to accept it and with encouragement from other members I have learnt to dismiss it and look forward SportsAble has helped me make a new group of friends amongst whom are like minded people It has also helped with my fitness as after spending a year on bed rest I had put on a lot of weight Since joining the club and becoming more active

  • and the volunteers and staff have been great in offering general support You also get a lot of help and support from other members I am pleased to say that I hold several national championship medals to my name I haven t had the honour of achieving a Paralympic medal but I do aim for success in and future Paralympic Games and am training hard all the time My most memorable moment in my swimming career so far would be making my first ever swimming final which was in the Beijing 08 Paralympic Trials It was so unexpected as I had an opportunity to make it to Beijing which certainly was not my main target at that time To be swimming with the eight fastest swimmers out of 300 competitors in the trial was truly electric largely because most of those I was racing against I considered as my idols and my mentors My parents family friends are a big inspiration to me They are the people who come with me to training at half five in the morning drive hundreds of miles to go to a competition support me when times are low and celebrate with me when success is made all without a complaint So when I do well my supporters know that their time and effort has no gone to waste Being an elite athlete means to me that I have achieved a very high level of sporting performance and I have something special within me which is beyond the average My advice to other young athletes is dream big because anything is achievable if you are prepared to work hard for it Make sure you go through every stage as all the years of hard work and preparation is really worth it More about Swimming at
