  • a fellow sportsman Stuart Anderson pushed themselves along a Marathon route each day for seven days a feat that saw them raise thousands of pounds to build the first disability sports centre where SportsAble now stands on Braywick Sports Ground Maidenhead Although no longer participating in competitive sport John is inspiring others to pick up the baton His warmth of character enthusiasm for sport and the fun and benefits that can be had through a specialist sports club like SportsAble is evident at every event in every speech and in every conversation he has with a member Lady Catherine Stevenson the High Sheriff of the Royal County of Berkshire in 2010 11 supported the application for Mr Jenkins MBE Speaking very highly of John she remembers the moment she met him John s name was well known as the very public face of disability sport in the County but nothing had prepared me for his vitality his energy and his total commitment to SportsAble and its members Now a Patron of SportsAble Lady Catherine desribes it as a hub of activity with many sports taking place at any one time but the constant presence of it is John He may be confined to a wheelchair but this is almost forgotten with his cheerfullness his interest in the people he is talking to he holds a belief that everyone disabled or otherwise has something to offer the community Forty years after becoming an active committee member sports person and fundraiser John Jenkins is still the anchor that holds SportsAble steady He is still 100 involved and is the lead volunteer in actions as well as in words in fundraising sporting events and plans for the future including the redevelopment of SportsAble which will see the modest centre turn into a leading large sports complex John s achivements are many from representing Team GB at the 1984 Paralmypic Games to becoming a key figure in the formation of the British Table Tennis Association for the Disabled but perhaps his biggest achievement is seen in the faces and heard in the voices of SportsAble s members some of whom are the area s most severly disabled and sadly socially isolated people SportsAble has changed my life are the words often spoken by members who have benefitted from the support expert coaching and facilities that SportsAble provides John is a role model for my two daughters says Jennie whose youngest daughter is now an elite Para Table Tennis athlete When someone joins he personally encourages them to have a go at all sports and then he finds out what their talents are In my case it was my daughter and table tennis For many of us our children s disabilities can be overwhelming and it s hard to be positive sometimes However seeing disabled people of all ages at the many events at SportsAble sport fundraising and socialising inspired by John through his many years of involvement and campaigning provides not only comfort but
