  • staff operate at SportsAble by working a set number of hours but by also volunteering hours as well Sharon helped the charity at every opportunity She was a great hands on team member joining the centre s bar staff to fun the fully licensed bar at public functions helping to give the centre a deep clean before an NHS blood donor session too place supporting Sports Manger Nick Gibbs as he ran outreach multisports sessions for local school children and Sharon excelled at bringing lots of enthusiasm and ideas to fundraising events A keen cyclist Sharon explored many of the sporting opportunities offered at SportsAble such as archery boccia new age kurling and more With the help of qualified coaches Alan Clarke and John Greaves Sharon caught the archery bug and joined in the sessions in her own time on a weekly basis Sharon was also a competitor in the popular Target Pentathlon event and was instrumental in securing the permission for boccia a Paralympic indoor ball sport similar to boules or Petanque to be played at Frogmore House where SportsAble will hold a charity day on 16th May as granted by Her Majesty the Queen Sharon was a huge asset to our team and we thank Vodafone s World of Difference for the opportunity says SportsAble s Operations Manager Kerl Haslam Sharon truly livened up our office with her sunny smile and enthusiasm and we all learnt so much from her SportsAble has benefitted from her legal expertise the hours she spent volunteering and from the natural caring way she supported many of our disabled members We will miss her and hope that she stays in touch Sharon hopes to return to SportsAble to support the charity at events such as the Wheelchair Push and Family Fete day on

  • Kirsten and Fiona Gibbs Nicholas and Jane Peacock Jennie Bouron Alicia Fester David Pucill Chris Humprhis Karen Joyce Gill Gibbs Nick Davis Damian Ng Sam Lightowler In true SportsAble fashion all of our athletes had been busy previously in the day taking part in other sports Several had been to the gym out for walks and exercise classes during the day and competitive long distance swimmer Damian Ng had swam in two previous events that morning Volunteer Co ordinator Jennie Bouron was really pleased with the event and especially proud of several individuals who had achieved personal bests during the swim Overall we swam 114 laps our highest number of laps swam as a team in the last five years Jennie was also pleased to have spent some time with long term friend of the charity Theresa May MP for Maidenhead Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities Jennie comments Theresa was really chatty and spent a lot of time with SportsAble swim teams She was especially complimentary on our new brand saying that she liked the name very much A staggering 27 000 was pledged overall during the Swimarathon an amazing amount that will benefit so many good causes Thanks to the Maidenhead Lions for organising the event and for giving SportsAble the opportunity to take part People can still sponsor SportsAble Swimmers by donating online at www purecharity org swimarathon A previous Swimathon organised by the Windsor Lions took place in October 2011 Swimming a total of 74 laps using 2 lanes was the Swimathon team Chris Humphris David Pucill Dean Harding Jennie Bouron Pam Fletcher Rebecca Gale Val Jones Sebastian Higgs and Warren Higgs Join Us Join Only 40 a year with reduced rates for families Sign up now Membership The benefits and entitlements it brings

  • Simon Clare Scott Denton and Tia Ruel Entering into their first ever competition after only playing for a few months were Penny Froude Daniel Grove and Harry Grove Simon Scott and Tia each placed in the top three of their category to go through to the National Championships in Sheffield in May This is Simon and Tia s second visit to the finals Boccia is a Paralympic sport that is sweeping the nation It is a game of skill and strategy similar to boules or petanque and played indoors by wheelchair users with severe physical impairments Players are placed in categories according to ability and given classification numbers Simon Clare and Tia Ruel are both BC1 players and Scott Denton Penny Froude and Daniel and Harry Grove are BC4 players As Scott prepares for his first ever national finals his proud dad Darren Denton comments Scott totally deserved his silver medal and place at the nationals and I m extremely proud of him and all that he has achieved since joining SportsAble three years ago SportsAble has transformed Scott s life Scott was once a very shy boy and is now a great sports person with a great little character And that doesn t just apply to Scott everyone who comes into the club is given great support and shown that nothing in sport is impossible Joining SportsAble was by far the best thing Scott and I have ever done Join Us Join Only 40 a year with reduced rates for families Sign up now Membership The benefits and entitlements it brings Find out more Members How we ve helped a wide range of disabled athletes Read more Donate Why Donate SportsAble are one of the UK s leading charities dedicated to supporting disabled people through sport and social activity

  • more importantly remembering them something he struggles with due to a brain injury from the crash 10 years ago Besides the individual sports trophies there were 15 special awards given to individuals for noted endeavour such as the Surinder Benawra Memorial Trophy which was awarded to Slough schoolboy Daniel German for best improved junior in the club Daniel who attends sports sessions with his mum dad and sister Jessica has a form of autism and has done extremely well this year with learning to work as a team player in boccia improving his swimming and taking part in a number of different shooting target and field athletics competitions He has also improved his social skills at the same time Trophies such as The Jot Trophy and the Meaden Profile System Trophy are awarded to people who use every opportunity at the club to help themselves and to give back to the club The former was won by MS sufferer Jacki Witt who is a great ambassador for the club and acts as a secretary for one section as well as being a section leader for another The latter went to wheelchair user Jen Brown who enjoys getting involved in kurling table tennis ten pin bowling pentathlons and in pool competitions Jen was voted in as ten pin bowling section leader recently and has thrown herself back into club activity after a series of serious shoulder operations Unable to make it on the night due to her training schedule was Paralympic hopeful Georgina Callingham who won the The Wilkinson Sword award This is awarded to the club member who has excelled in the highest level of competitive sport during the year Georgina is currently competing in world championships with the GB air weapons team and hopes to secure herself a place in the GB squad for the London 2012 Paralympic Games Joining SportsAble members for an evening of celebration were several VIPs including SportsAble Patrons and London 2012 hopefuls Kathy Critchlow Smith and Sophie Christiansen plus Danny and Tamra Booth from The Shanly Group who are the main supporters and sponsors of SportsAble Four of the Thames Valley HOGS Harley Owners Group joined Chairman Vivienne Davies for dinner and were surprised by receiving The Jenkins Trophy for fundraising excellence The HOGS are just fantastic and we had to honour their fundraising achievements and show them how much their support means to us says Chairman Vivienne Davies Year after year the HOGS take part in our fundraising events and this year they are doing their own fundraising initiatives They also support the charity by hiring the venue for meetings and social gatherings The RBWM Mayor Cllr Asghar Majeed presented all 65 trophies and said I always enjoy coming here and I want to say a big thank you to you as WAMDSAD for making all the residents of RBWM extremely proud and you will continue to do so as the new SportsAble I m sure Join Us Join Only 40 a year

  • that s 60 arrows each at a time during the day and night Rising to the challenge were SportsAble members Sam Baldwin and Linda Thorpe who not only both shot through every single session but tried to better their score each time For the third consecutive year Wokingham Bowman Sam stayed awake and shot throughout the night this year scoring 9 247 points with a highest of 585 points Linda who is always helping SportsAble s archery section with events scored 7 149 points with the highest of 471 points Other superstars of the event were 9 year old Caprice James and father and son team Warren and Sebastian Higgs Caprice was the Arrowthon s highest fundraiser raising 703 through sponsorship and selling cakes Warren is a multiple stroke victim and has lost the use of one side Shooting with one arm and steadying the bow with his mouth was no problem for Warren who enjoys supporting SportsAble alongside his sporty son Sebastian The event was opened by John Jenkins President and closed by Deputy Chairman David Brown both of whom appreciated that this year s Arrowthon was held in memory of archery coach mentor and director of SportsAble the late Ray Fields John Greaves Arrowthon organiser member of SportsAble for 35 years and leading archery coach was pleased with the event It was a brilliant event that went seamlessly It was nice to see so many people taking part especially our friends at Maidenhead Archers and Reading Archers and it will be great to get more people involved next year Thanks once again to our great team of volunteers without whom the Arrowthon wouldn t be as successful The date for the 2013 Arrowthon is provisionally booked for 23 rd 24 th February Join Us Join Only 40 a
