  • Smith The team have really have enjoyed sharing their sports knowledge and expertise and hope that the community s interest continues long after the Games are over Here s just some of the things that we have been up to Four SportsAble volunteers went to Mill Ride Golf Course to run a day s sporting activities including archery boccia and fun target Frisbee Operations Kerl Haslam spoke to a very interested group of school children at St Anthony s Sports Manager Nick Gibbs did many things including teaching boccia and new age kurling to the Bracknell Stroke Group Students from the sixth form at Claire s Court Senior School came in to meet Chairman Vivienne Davies and to listen to her talk about the Paralympics and what sport gives disabled people Centre Manager Jennie Bouron hosted an afternoon s teambuilding and introduction into Paralympic sport to delegates from a national energy supply company who had booked SportsAble s meeting room for a morning s conference Of all the education and outreach work that the charity has been doing Chairman Vivienne Davies says It has been an absolute pleasure to go to lots of different places to meet people of all ages who want to engage in sport We are pleased that they chose SportsAble help them with their Olympic and Paralympic inspired events and it gave us the perfect opportunity to make new friends and to spread the word about our charity and all that we do to assist athletes on their chosen path If you would like to find out more about benefitting from a talk sports sessions or activity day at SportsAble please contact Sports Manager Nick Gibbs on 01628 627 690 nick gibbs sportsable co uk Join Us Join Only 40 a year with reduced rates for

  • family provided a comic element dressing as the main characters from the popular computer game Super Mario Brothers Olympics The Windsor Lions longterm friends and supporters of the charity pushed SportsAble Paralympian Rebecca Gale around Windsor with many of the group carrying a life size row boat as they walked We were pleased this year to welcome new teams and pushees to the event First time Push entrants the Bracknell Ladies Rugby Club were teamed with first time pushee Jacki Witt who reports that the day went really well and the Bracknell Ladies were a really lovely bunch of girls Windsor didn t know what had hit it we were pushing up and down the lines of tourists grabbing donatons off of those waiting to see the changing of the guards The generosity of the public can not be downplayed They helped to boost the day s funds to 7 384 a figure which SportsAble s President John Jenkins announced at the end of the day along with these words Once again it s been another successful Push When I woke up this morning and saw the rain I was really worried but here you all are at the end of an incredible day of fundraising and you didn t let the weather bother you Well done Raising almost eight thousand pounds on a wet miserable day is a huge huge feat that shouldn t go unnoticed A day like this doesn t just happen It takes a great deal of dedication and organisation to pull off What I am pleased to say is that people from every part of the charity pitched in and took part which makes us all very proud of this special organisation Thank you JJ as he is affectionately known has taken part in every Wheelchair Push in the last 36 years including a mammoth Push from Bristol to London that raised enough money to build the first part of our sports centre This year his team of sports Para medics raised the most funds on the day collecting 1845 09 To close the day off Chairman Viviennie Davies presented the Spirit of the Push trophy to the team who did an outstanding job with fundraising This year it went to Rose Ash and Anton Walton a couple who recently joined SportsAble and are thoroughly enjoying their membership Rose and Anton are shining examples of the perfect members said Vivienne as she handed the award over to an emotional Anton They take part in many of the sports sessions they support every event that we arrange and they are always available to help like they did with the Push at a moment s notice When they return from their fundraising their buckets are always the heaviest which tells me that they are representing us well out there and really engaging with the public Well done Thanks to everyone who took part and thanks to those who supported the event particularly our two sponsors The Beehive

  • Jennie s presentation showed just how hard SportsAble s sport fundraising and events staff work Together you all volunteer 19 752 hours a year Many of you have more than one role such as minibus driving and helping our members with their sport each week others may attend fundraising meetings and events and help to run our bar in the evenings Without your time energy commitment and fun loving spirit we wouldn t be the organisation that we are today Volunteers from all walks of life join SportsAble to help disabled people to fulfil their sporting ambitions and to get involved in helping to raise funds and raise the profile of the charity Many have specialist skills that are put to good use at the centre For instance one is a paramedic another an occupational therapist and there are accountants teachers police officers students and retirees who all lend a helping hand on a very regular basis This was the first of many celebrations of the work done by SportsAble volunteers and the two hour celebration welcomed speakers to the stage where volunteers could talk about why they chose SportsAble and why they keep on volunteering I volunteer at SportsAble because I want to give back to the charity that has helped my daughter so much commented one volunteer sports coach I give up my time to run sports sessions for junior athletes To see their smiling faces makes it all worthwhile said another Chairman Vivienne Davies who holds at least four different volunteer roles across sports events fundraising and the business side of the charity closed the event with these words Next to my family this charity is really important to me There s something very special about this place and I love doing all I can to promote

  • with a shot that saw him just 1 6inches away from the glass Following on from that was a shot gun start where the teams took off around the course One of those teams was made up of members from the SportsAble golf section who managed 9 holes and had a thoroughly good day Although the grass was tall in some places and we lost a lot of balls it was a good game of golf and we ve enjoyed being here said Golf Section Leader Jacki Witt who led the mixed ability team of MS sufferers Winning best team overall with 86 points was George on the Green whose team members were Russell Stone Richard Gibson Steve Hogg and Alex Surgeon The runners up were Cookham Bridge Rotary whose members were Peter Osborn Rhiannon Calladine Frances Bartlett and David Calladine Other winners included Frances Bartlett 8th hole Nearest to the Pin ladies Steve Ball 9th hole Longest Drive men Di Moss 12th hole Longest Drive ladies Rick Twitchings 15th hole Nearest to the Pin men Thanks to TV sports presenter and friend of SportsAble Steve Rider the evening s auction was lively and caught the interest of everyone in the room Prizes that were hotly bid for were a round of golf for four at Celtic Manor Resort an archery coaching course with 5 time Paralympian Kathy Critchlow Smith and a life sized teddy bear SportsAble wishes to thank everyone who attended the Charity Golf Day and the team at Mill Ride for their continued support Doug Coull Club Captain Phil Ribbins Vice Captain Fran Freeland Lady Captain Marie Lynch Lady Vice Captain Thanks also to our sponsors Invesco Perpetual River Marketing John Guest Ltd and Iris Kirkwood personal estate agents Photography by Ian Legge Photography www il online
