  • being turned down by three indoor shooting clubs who stated having Rob on board was a health and safety issue he approached Stoke Mandeville Stadium the birthplace of the Paralympics Its trained staff pointed him towards SportsAble where he was welcomed and where he has been happy ever since November 2011 From the moment Rob joined he was really impressed I felt really happy when I joined SportsAble Alan Alan Kenny air weapons sports leader really understood my deafness and had really good deaf awareness in his coaching It was amazing Everyone was really welcoming and helpful We all might have different disabilities but we enjoy sport together Alan gave Rob the training and confidence to go forward to UK Deaf Sports and start following the Deaflympics pathway a similar coaching and support system he gave to Georgina Callingham the youngest and the only female shooter in the final of the London 2012 Paralympic Games Although the Deaflympics is different to the Paralympics in terms of publicity support and ceremony it s the same in one huge way many disabled athletes have to fund themselves for international competitions Rob s costs for travel kit and equipment went into several thousand pounds and for a time it looked like he was unable to compete Upon hearing this the team at SportsAble lead by Chairman Vivienne Davies set about fundraising for Rob Donations came in from members a SportsAble competition fund was accessed and the rest was generously donated by the Ascot Round Table and Rob went on his way The world of being an international athlete got off to a strange start when at airport check in Rob s gun was carelessly inspected Airport officials mishanlded the equipment emptying pellets everywhere This had an impact at the competition venue a few days later where Rob found that his gun wasn t as it should be and that combined with the pressure of the event made the start of the competition extremely stressful Added to that the shooting hall was underground underneath a police station and was very dark and cramped with the media sitting quite close behind the marksmen snapping away Rob also had to cope without teammates and without a coach It was different without a coach without that 1 1 support Other teams were a lot more professional with their assistants and coaches who were there to give tips and suggest improvements but I was happy just to be there I really felt the pressure though The competition was unreal and there were some really highly skilled shooters there My heart was thumping insanely out of my chest during my 1 hour and 45 minutes of shooting and I didn t have a stand for my gun and had to hold it all the time It was exhausting Being there and seeing everyone from all over the world was interesting So many countries were represented and people were really friendly Quite a fuss was made over me as people
