  • teens at SportsAble is the now world champion gold medallist Georgina Callingham Georgie recently equalled the world record of shooting a perfect 600 shooting as an individual within the GB team in category R5 at 10 m using a rifle prone in the SH2 mixed category She represented Team GB at the London 2012 Paralympic Games Another recent success is Jim Conway who won gold in the Veterans International Competition and Rob Lowe a profoundly hearing impaired marksman represented Great Britain at the Deaflympics in Sofia in 2013 There is a huge range of achievements at county level as well This includes Bhwaesh Patel who won every round in his first ever competition in the Middlesex Postal Shoot Bhawesh joined SportsAble two years ago following rehabilitation from a serious car accident which left him with impaired mobility and communication difficulties Our coaches and volunteers work hard to ensure our members enjoy shooting as they help them to achieve their potential And the sport isn t as scary as it sounds all you need is a bit of motivation and to the patience to learn the technical knowledge and you ll soon learn to love shooting and have fun Proof that learning a new sport can benefit other areas of one s life and help newly disabled people cope with their lives and learn to be confident again is to be found within the Air Weapons section After being motivated to try the sport one man found that he learned to concentrate again and that this renewed skill improved other areas of his life such as playing the clarinet and the saxophone And one young woman who has been disabled for less than a year excels at blind shooting and shows tremendous spirit and determination Air Weapons Session Times Mondays 4pm

  • and strategy is to throw your balls closest to the jack the white ball to win Boccia is ideal for athletes in either power or manual wheelchairs as the main rule of the game is that players must remain seated throughout ambulant players throw from a chair There are 13 balls played in each end of a game one white ball six red balls and six blue balls Opposing teams take one of the two sets of coloured balls The balls are soft and pliable allowing players to grasp and maintain a good grip on the ball before each throw How do you play Boccia Each player sits in a 1m x 2 5m box and this is where they throw the ball from A Boccia court is marked out on the sports hall floor often using the length and breadth of a badminton court as a marker and each team takes it in turns to start a game by throwing the white ball Then the player who threw the jack goes first with their coloured ball and then the other team throw their ball Play then continues with the team whose ball is furthest away from the jack throwing next Each end finishes when all 13 balls have been played A referee then measures which balls as closest the red or the blue and awards points accordingly Is it a team sport Boccia can be played in several ways Each side has 6 balls and each game is made up of several ends A side can be 1 person 2 people 3 people or 6 people it depends on how many people are competing If 1 person is playing against another person then each competitor uses all 6 balls If 2 people are playing against another pair then each player uses 3 balls each per end and so on Can anyone play Of course Boccia is a very inclusive and sociable game and can be played in a competitive situation or for fun with people of all ages Boccia was designed originally as a sport for players with cerebral palsy However the sport has really taken off and people of all ages and abilities are playing this addictive game all around the world What equipment do you need SportsAble has all the gear required so when you come along to each session just bring yourself and a readiness and willingness to learn and play Our most recent successes One of our players Penny Froude joined the England Squad in August 2014 She has flown the flag for SportsAble and her country at two internationals in Prague and Poland Tia Ruel 18 is a member of the Boccia England Lions Squad England B Team and Anton Walton is a member of the Boccia England Talent Squad Boccia Session Times Contact the SportsAble office for latest session times Call 01628 627 690 Boccia Location SportsAble main hall SportsAble Maidenhead Boccia Contact Information Contact Damian Ng Sports Development Officer Tel 01628 627

  • great artists weren t born with a brush in their hand They didn t obsess about the weight of the paper or the right brush so don t get caught up in the technical If it looks good to you then it is fantastic because it s your conception I m a great believer that creative people be given the freedom to express their art after all no one can teach or take away the basis of any artistic work your imagination Our group is definitely all fun and cream cakes Many of our members will say that the section is a wonderful place to create pieces of art using different mediums which are provided but that they also enjoy going along for the socialising So after you re done with all the amazing sports that the club offers come n chill in the Art room and express your intuition your very own inner teacher Get rid of your blues be fearless unleash your inner artist come and have a go On a serious note Yash is most proud of creating an art group for people with disabilities when there was none in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead She is also proud of the art award which she recently gave to my lovely volunteer Eileen Taylor the most important person in the room who keeps our tea mugs full and brings quiet to an otherwise lively room as we munch on a sweet treat or two SportsAble arranges for the section s art to be exhibited for sale in the centre and places like the Maidenhead Town Hall Over the past two years six Christmas cards designed by SportsAble members have gone on sale in support of SportsAble Each one is a winning design from the Creative Therapies
