  • SportsAble and other organisations such as Divability being joined by corporate organisations such as a firm of solicitors from London Taught by training expert Margaret Brown the course covered several aspects of disability focussing heavily on communication where even a short lesson on the basics in British Sign Language was given We are so lucky at SportsAble to have such a great volunteer base says Alan and it s important that when they are here working with disabled people they are using the right approaches and correct language to ensure that the disabled person feels comfortable respected and ready for sport I have some really brilliant volunteers in my section and I want to keep up their training so that they do an even better job and stay with us To help explain some of the areas of the course a practical element was brought into play in the shape of boccia one of SportsAble s popular sports Boccia is a ball game created around 15 years ago for severely disabled wheelchair users It is similar to boules or petanque and acts as a really useful teaching tool as well as a team builder Including boccia into the course really helped bring the course alive continues Alan At the end of the course it was all smiles Jim Graham of Divability commented It was the best course I ve ever been on Join Us Join Only 40 a year with reduced rates for families Sign up now Membership The benefits and entitlements it brings Find out more Members How we ve helped a wide range of disabled athletes Read more Donate Why Donate SportsAble are one of the UK s leading charities dedicated to supporting disabled people through sport and social activity Find out more Donate Now SportsAble can now

  • are able to join to take part for fun at local and regional level or to train towards competing at national and Paralympic level Our slogan is carrying the torch for disability sport comments Nick Gibbs but our overriding motto is Fun Friendship and Opportunity something that most of the sports organisations at the conference had in common with us Nick really enjoyed the chance to talk about SportsAble and to meet other people from all over the country I talked about our strengths and successes one of our strengths our being a non disabled and disabled athletes working alongside each other competing together or against each other You won t find that anywhere else Another one of our successes and strengths is most definitely our volunteers and the award winning work that they do Our coaches are all volunteers we have 10 at the moment and 10 in the planning Seventy per cent of those are disabled and they have started a lot of athletes on their Paralympic pathways The audience was extremely interested in Nick s talk and questions such as How has SportsAble managed to attract and retain so many volunteers over the years and How does SportsAble keep going demonstrated that SportsAble s recipe for success and vision for the future is one that others are keen to emulate In answer to the final question Nick replied The only thing constant about SportsAble is change We are continually changing new facilities new sports new programmes new fundraising initiatives and more Perhaps two pieces of major change changing from a totally volunteer run organisation to a properly run business and rebranding to our new name SportsAble in 2012 were crucial in helping us move forward successfully towards an even bigger future Barry Horne CEO Of the English
