  • There was food Champagne gifts and cards and letters of congratulations on display from all over the world including letters from celebrities and key figures from the world of mainstream sport Everyone was in full support of John being awarded for his volunteer work and in complete admiration of his achievements Richard Kellaway RBWM Mayor at the time the MBE was announced wrote I am delighted that your tireless efforts at SportsAble and the work you have put in over so many years in the Royal Borough has been recognised in this special way You are indeed an amazing ambassador for sport for the disabled I am sure your family friends and colleagues must be very proud of you as we are too On the day John Jenkins said It is so lovely to see so many of lovely friends and family here today and I thank you all for coming especially those of you with busy schedules such as Theresa May and Lady Catherine Stevenson It has been a tremendous morning and I am so proud to have received this medal To be honest this is a symbiotic relationship with me and the charity Without this club I wouldn t have had the opportunities I have had plus the huge amount of friends I ve made or the fun that s been had over the years This club is very special to me I am blessed by a wonderful wife and family who have shown me so much love and support over the years I am very grateful that you are all here today SportsAble s Chief Executive Officer Kerl Haslam says This is as much a celebration for the charity as it is for JJ The amount of volunteer effort that you have put in and inspired in others over the last forty years is incredible and you truly deserve this honour It has been lovely to meet your family and family today and we thank them for their support and donations over the years I want to thank you all for the most truly wonderful day I had with my family on Friday it was truly spectacular the most memorable of days I know a great deal of creativity time and effort went into the exercise and it showed The food was excellent I have had so many compliments and everything worked so well Thank you for your presentations the Award submission is very moving and I am deeply touched by all the kinds words people said about me and it was beautifully presented Thank you too for the very thoughtful Buck House pen and the postcard Kerl which I know my children particularly will show off in the Isle of Man My family particularly especially my sisters were so impressed with our Club and everything we have done it was a real eye opener for them All they usually see are requests for raffle tickets sales but now they know first hand what we are all

  • Smiths organised saw whole families coming out to enjoy the sport together and more and more people are discovering that they enjoy the sport after it trying out at regular archery corporate team building events that the couple help to run Kathy and Gary are also keen to get disabled archers out of their comfort zone by shooting outside more and their patience and quiet encouraging ways have encouraged people who once tried the sport and lost interest to pick up that bow again Their list of pupils is growing fast and there have been many successes in such a short space of time including one novice archer being selected for development for Tokyo 2020 Coaching isn t the only way that Kathy is keeping in with the sport She is still sticking to her own training schedule and taking part in regional competitions She is also acting as a prominent ambassador for the sport taking her many medals and her London 2012 Paralympic Games torch along to schools and community events where she is inspiring the next generation of athletes and supporters to get involved in archery Says SportsAble s Chairman Vivienne Davies We are so lucky to have Kathy and Gary on board at SportsAble They are using their many years of international expertise to help people discover understand and develop a passion and skill for archery As well as working with individuals on personal goals they are helping other coaches with their development as well They are really helping us develop local talent and to further develop the sport in our area Kathy represented Team GB in Barcelona Atlanta Sydney Athens and Beijing as an individual and in a team winning medals of every colour Join Us Join Only 40 a year with reduced rates for families

  • men women and juniors in ambulant and wheelchair categories Two trophies Best Overall Team and Best in Track Field were won by the home team SportsAble The day was organised seamlessly and executed perfectly thanks to the team volunteers and our grateful thanks go especially to the 20 volunteers from Newlands Girls School who were there most of the day helping all the athletes complete their events by officiating and supporting them with access and equipment The SportsAble team was made up experienced athletes who have competed nationally in many sports and also there were lots of new members competing at the games for the first time Ben Harris of Slough won Silver Petanque Bronze Skittles Gold Shot Gold Javelin Gold Discus and Emma Scrivens of Maidenhead won not just a silver medal but the praise of Nick Gibbs our Head of Sports who said that Emma who has Cerebral Palsy showed the most endeavour on the day across a variety of events A highlight of the day for our CEO Kerl Haslam was watching the 100m ambulant races outside on the athletics track SportsAble member Dave Hill took first place with a staggering 16 3 second run not bad for someone with hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy and his fellow team mate Rob Lowe came a close second at 17 seconds Both men are in their early 50s and profoundly deaf Rob had just recovered from a triple heart bypass People can do extraordinary things at SportsAble Join Us Join Only 40 a year with reduced rates for families Sign up now Membership The benefits and entitlements it brings Find out more Members How we ve helped a wide range of disabled athletes Read more Donate Why Donate SportsAble are one of the UK s leading charities dedicated to supporting disabled

  • in and out of the water carrying out duties such as hoisting people in and out of the pool escorting them around the poolside helping them get changed working one to one in them water as well as ensuring the safety of all swimmers in and out of the pool Some of our volunteers have achieved the NPLQ National Pool Lifeguard Qualification through SportsAble which gives them lifesaving and first aid qualifications relevant to working on poolside At the end of the session there is often a short training session followed by a relaxing swim for the volunteers themselves SportsAble has over 150 volunteers who give several hours of their time each week to help disabled people of all ages and abilities achieve their sporting goals One of our hardest working volunteers who is so giving of her time is our Chairman Vivienne Davies Vivienne volunteers in every dimension of the charity from organising sporting social and VIP events running the Board of Trustees promoting and developing disability sport not just internally but externally through formal occasions and through being part of our Outreach Team and by helping whenever and wherever she s needed such as in the office at corporate events and more Vivienne is best known for her smiley face her warm and supportive nature and for her competitive sporting streak We couldn t wish for a better Chairman One of our most loyal and longest serving volunteers is Geoff Mason who has been with us since the charity began in 1975 Geoff is the person whom everyone turns to when they need a helping hand and he s great at inventing bespoke specialist sports equipment for our most severely disabled athletes As we celebrate 40 years of fun friendship and opportunity Geoff is th rowing a party

  • know that Penny will give it her all this weekend and display her very best boccia We re all behind her and hope the county and the nation is too Penny s story 31 year old Penny has been disabled since a small child due to Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Osteoporosis Scoliosis and Nerve Damage Her movements are severely limited and she is confined to a wheelchair needing around the clock care and support A chance meeting with a SportsAble representative at the Royal County of Berkshire Show reintroduced Penny to the idea of sport as a way of escaping isolation and getting some gentle exercise That was three and a half years ago and Penny has transformed herself since joining SportsAble and is thankful for that chance meeting Stuck at home for years since leaving college at 18 Penny s self esteem was pretty low When she joined SportsAble back in 2011 she found it very painful to make eye contact and chat to other members in the club but stuck at it and enjoyed her sessions Slowly she began to make friends and to grow in confidence As Penny came out of her shell her sporting prowess shown through brightly Penny quickly picked up the basics of two sports so adeptly rifle shooting and boccia and her coaches fastracked her onto a development pathway first entering her into regional and national competitions where she started to impress people up and down the country At the same time as medalling in shooting competitions some where she was up against able bodied shooters Penny was getting talent spotted by Boccia England the national governing body for the sport For the 2013 2014 season Penny was asked to join the England B Squad and began training alongside the national team quickly improving and showing great potential to be promoted to the main England Squad Although in constant pain due to her condition causing her to have her back and neck fused which leaves her with very little movement in her whole spine and neck Penny pushes pass the discomfort to train and excel in her sport Prior to a three hour boccia session every Tuesday Penny travels to Oxford for very painful procedures that leave her drained yet she overcomes that and is often first to arrive at training Although now a proud part of the England Squad Penny is still an active member of SportsAble and during training sessions and league matches she takes charges helping the younger ones improve their game Penny also tries to give back to SportsAble where she can Most recently she and her father secured a donation of 2 000 from two separate Masonic Lodges in Berkshire and Surrey Penny deserves recognition for her dedication to sport and for the way in which she battles through life to become a better sportsperson Her story is an inspirational one and proves that anyone can become an elite athlete if they have the right drive commitment and support
