better because he at least carries some undertones of the 60s Riddler played by Frank Gorshin even if he is wildly exaggerated Batman Forever is also the first introduction in this series of the Boy Wonder Robin Dick Grayson Chris O Donnell He is orphaned after his acrobat family is killed in an attempt to stop a bomb set by Two Face at a charity event which Nygma watches After feeling guilt at being unable to save his parents and understanding the pain of losing family Bruce convinces Dick to stay with him at Wayne Manor Robin s acrobatics outfit harks back to the 60s costume Robin used to wear before it is replaced with his own rubber suit with subtle colouration This Robin is definitely more badass than the boy running around in little green hot pants though At one point he even steals the Batmobile for a joyride around the seedier streets of Gotham and saves a girl from a neon catacomb and its army of brightly painted ninja thugs Luckily Batman catches up with him Meanwhile Riddler and Two Face team up to carry out a heist and steal enough cash to get the green imp mass production for his boxes These devices are designed to sit atop a television and suck in the viewer while their secrets and thoughts are beamed directly into The Riddler s brain through a massive green aurora floating through the skies of Gotham And they look like blenders with crystallised polystyrene in them Just for fun when watching the movie see if you can spot the continuity error when The Riddler is examining a diamond during the heist Two Face agrees to a partnership just because he wants to kill Batman which The Riddler promises him is possible with his help It was by a flip of his famous two headed coin that Riddler was lucky enough to get the deal going rather than getting shot in the face Only a couple of these in between scenes have any weight to the story some show the villains progress in carrying out their plans but mainly they are opportunities for mild cross dressing and silly slapstick such as the show me how to punch a guy moment They seem to be filler between the scenes with Chase and Bruce examining their growing feelings for each other whist they discuss the riddles which have been sent to him and Chases dilemma in being torn between Bruce and Batman Meanwhile Bruce is consistently troubled by his past and memories of his parents funeral This is a subtle reference to Batman Year One by Schumacher Using the brain draining machine Nygma manages to steal the memory of an ominous flying bat from Bruce s mind at a party celebrating his sales success leading him and Two Face to discover that Bruce is secretly Batman Acting on this knowledge they break into Bruce s mansion on Halloween night before he can confess all to Chase kidnap

to a lion urinating on him A minor human antagonist is introduced as well whose sole purpose is to get eaten No real imagination is presented in Tremors 5 which is also highly derivative liberally borrowing from Aliens and Jurassic Park while the script also takes inspiration from 2013 s Pacific Rim The original Tremors was a very funny tongue in cheek horror comedy but unfortunately this fifth entry is not nearly as successful on the humour front The actors try to mine laughs but it only leads to a handful of awful improvised lines from Kennedy and other horrendous attempts at comedy including the aforementioned scene of a caged Burt Dialogue is expectedly standard order in need of a spark of wit to liven up the enterprise Also it s borderline embarrassing to see Kennedy s stunt double doing BMX stunts during the opening credits Tremors 5 does contribute to the mythology of the franchise to an extent even opening with a segment from Gummer s TV show which discusses the Graboids and Ass Blasters at length for anybody who isn t familiar with the franchise And upon arriving in South Africa Burt finds that the monsters have evolved somewhat differently which allows the movie to shake things up a little bit The location switch to Africa was likely done for budgetary reasons but it does add new scenery to the series even though the cinematography is exceedingly workmanlike On a more positive note Tremors 5 does boast reasonably convincing special effects for a direct to video effort and director Don Michael Paul doesn t make the mistake of keeping the digital beasts front and centre for the entire movie Rather glimpses of the creatures are fleeting relying more on sound design and practically achieved sprays of dirt to establish the presence of the Graboids However there is a particularly woeful attempt to mimic the raptors in the kitchen scene of Jurassic Park that only serves to underline how much Paul pales in comparison to Steven Spielberg The only actor to appear in all the Tremors movies as well as the TV show Gross continues to have a lot of fun in his iconic role emerging as the best thing in the entire movie When Tremors 5 Bloodlines observes Gross battling the Graboids it s solid fun even if the rest of the movie is not nearly as successful Kennedy who was so amusing as the film buff in the Scream series mugs the camera too often while the rest of the cast members fail to make an impact Still for what it is Tremors 5 provides a certain degree of entertainment in spite of its shortcomings and the fact that it s not irredeemably awful is a big deal Best Scene Never mind trying to pick from this film s slim picking how about a Graboid compilation Useless Trivia Via IMDb Kevin Bacon had initally expressed interest in returning to the franchise but ultimately decided to pass Travis

about that but his need for vengeance makes the rivalry deeply personal It leads to a rising body count that includes the death of a regular character In short this isn t a time waster like Insurrection but an attempt to make something more impactful Nemesis doesn t always succeed and it is victim to a plethora of plotholes and inconsistencies but high stakes always make for something more compelling This is also a very well made outing from a technical standpoint Though fourteen years old the excessive CGI has aged well and Baird gives a majestic sweep to some of the trailer moments The late Jerry Goldsmith who composed the signature theme for 1979 s The Motion Picture also provides his final Trek score to appreciative effect It s just a shame that such craftsmanship is powering a film that is so relentlessly dour and dialled into mortality On the topic of death SPOILERS the end of the film has the much loved Data Brent Spiner sacrificing himself to save his fellow crewmembers from a Doomsday device This is almost a play by play of Spock s death in Star Trek II but to me seeing the Next Gen s beloved android explode into a million pieces is still an affecting moment It ensures that instead of something jubilant we leave these characters on a thoroughly melancholic note This is my main issue with the film and why I am less likely to return to it in future Nemesis is deeply joyless and that s before you factor in that these familiar characters are no longer acting like their old selves To enjoy it you need to divorce yourself from the mythology of the show and just accept it as a routine action flick with a halfway decent villain It was made to be as commercially viable as possible and that results in a picture that is alternately entertaining and frustrating As an end to the first continuity of Star Trek movies Nemesis isn t all it could have been in retrospect Who knows if they were planning to do another movie to give them a real send off but this film effectively killed the franchise with its lacklustre 67 million box office haul only just recouping its budget It didn t deserve to flop but then we should all be thankful that its commercial failure led to J J Abrams 2009 reboot If you want a better send off for Picard and co just watch the final TNG episode All Good Things Short of them cropping up in a future movie or series that s the best you re going to get Best Scene A great tribute to Data s last strand Don t be surprised if this chokes you up more than the film Useless Trivia Via IMDb Is the lowest grossing Star Trek film in the history of the franchise Jeri Ryan Seven of Nine had a cameo in the earliest draft of the movie s

dream world The crew could also tell the Bak u that they clearly need technology to survive and try to get them to mix modern developments and ideologies for a better way of life All of these elements would lend a lot of development to the Ba ku but they just end up like actors in a photo frame inhabiting a moral high ground that s impossible to achieve Or from a production perspective the filmmakers could ve created a world where houses roads and crops are somehow grown without any kind of machinery and where people live in a much more spiritual state A rural farming community is a dreadful location to plant a group of technophobes and it is without a doubt Insurrection s biggest misstep The dilemma comes down to this potentially save the lives of billions or relocate six hundred and go against the Prime Directive The crew go for the latter This has been mocked in a lot of quarters for the ridiculous decision and although I am inclined to agree I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt After all dozens of philosophers throughout history have tried to create an absolutely ethical system there is so much room for the film to expand on the difficulty of morality But here the Ba ku are good beautiful and loving people and the Son a are evil ugly and in the wrong The lack of grey area brings no conflict to the decision and just emphasises the problem in it being a dilemma at all However all this dodges the main killer problem The story isn t a very good idea for a movie The concept works for television at best but here it grounds the Enterprise and her crew on an Earth like planet stuck sorting out political bureaucracy For what is meant to be a series about space exploration you have the makings of an eighteenth century costume drama Star Trek Insurrection feels like a telly movie that has managed to use the budget very well The problem is that the actual budget was 58 million This is the very definition of a movie that is for completists only and is a textbook example of how not to convert a television show into a motion picture I m reluctant to put all of these problems at the feet of Frakes though He clearly has a lot of love for the material and in spire of the actors playing it a little goofily it is solid enough There s nothing specifically wrong with his direction and though the production looks cheap for the budget all is generally coherent But it s spinning round a plot nucleus that just doesn t hold the attention The filmmakers should ve boldly gone back to the drawing board Best Scene This is the best part of Insurrection because at this point the movie could go anywhere we could have an interesting flick about a rogue Data

based on his appearances in the first three movies After Rocky III the pressure was on Sly to deliver another film before he became too old for the part how ironic looking back and Rocky IV is therefore plagued with all the hallmarks of a rush job The dialogue is incidental and seems improvised the acting is as mechanical as Paulie s robot WTF and the narrative is so painfully by the numbers that even those unfamiliar with the series will be able to figure out the ending a mile away Also Stallone appears to have cheated because he got away without actually telling a story Rocky IV is a couple of fight scenes sandwiched between half a dozen montages But fortunately the film is not without its entertainment value The formula still works and Rocky IV is slickly produced The Balboa vs Drago boxing fight is still fist pumping and goosebump inducing even if it s the furthest thing from realism And then there s Lundgren who looks more dopey than menacing as Ivan Drago Dolph is a woeful actor but at least his presence is tolerable and he delivered a few classic lines I must break you is rock solid gold However Brigitte Nielsen Stallone s wife at the time was horribly miscast and her Russian accent falls somewhere in between woeful and offensive to actual Russians In addition Rocky IV is imbued with blatant in your face jingoism which is about as subtle as one of Drago s jabs Tunes like Living in America are on the soundtrack while the stereotyping is offensively simplistic USA Good Russia Evil The pro American propaganda is so prominent that another more appropriate title would have been Rocky IV The Italian Stallion Enters the Cold War Such content may have been relevant in 1985 but it s a problem that there s more flag waving than human drama here Added to this it s clear that Stallone s stardom got to his head and made him slightly delusional when the Soviets begin cheering for Rocky at the end it s impossible not to roll one s eyes in disbelief Yet while Rocky IV is atrocious from any respectable critical standpoint it all works beautifully The film is disposable franchise filmmaking at its best and an exhilarating guilty pleasure it s difficult not to love the film on some kind of juvenile level The Rocky series had definitely run its course by this point but Rocky IV is enjoyable if you approach it in the right mindset Best Scene MONTAGE So like the whole film then Useless Trivia Via IMDb When shooting the film Stallone decided that for the shooting of the fight he and Lundgren should hit one another for real so as to increase the intensity of the scene After doing three takes of Rocky taking shots to ribs Stallone felt a burning in his chest but ignored it Later that night he had difficulty breathing and was taken to

formula and in the process neglected the heart and soul that allowed the first two movies to belie their formulaic nature For lack of better words Rocky III is a commercial vehicle which situates the trademark Rocky characters within a simplistic revenge tale It almost goes without saying that character behaviour in the film is predictable to the point of being groan worthy and the outcome of the climactic boxing match can be figured out long before it occurs On the upside Rocky III benefits immensely by the presence of Mr T and Hulk Hogan The boxing wrestling crossover which constitutes Hogan s cameo is absurd but it s fun and enjoyable nevertheless Meanwhile the Mr T vs Rocky battles are entertaining well crafted and fist pumping Not to mention Mr T is the true highlight of this feature With his mohawk and feather earrings Mr T is a brutal beast to behold and though his performance is single note his presence affords the film a touch of personality After all Mr T s role is more convincing as a boxer than Carl Weathers Apollo Creed who was more of a showman And it was here where Mr T first uttered the immortal line I pity the fool Added to this Rocky III was produced before Mr T shot to fame as the popular B A Baracus in The A Team and thus it s interesting to watch this film in a historical sense Another of the movie s greatest assets is the famous Survivor song Eye of the Tiger which subsequently became a radio staple and was catapulted to the top of the charts The song remains a widespread favourite to this day While Mr T is a fun villain the depiction of Balboa is unfortunately lacking in this particular instalment As presented here Rocky has lost a degree of his lovable edge Not to mention Stallone s performance is lazy and at times utterly naff For an example of this witness Stallone moping over Mickey s corpse it s almost painful to see acting that inept Despite this and despite the film s cheesiness simplicity and lack of human drama as well as its adherence to a painfully familiar formula Rocky III still delivers a number of the pleasures associated with the series Its slick polished fun to watch overflowing with testosterone and it will motivate you to go out and exercise Best Scene You know what to expect by now MONTAGE Useless Trivia Via IMDb According to an interview given by Mr T he attended the movie s premiere with his mother During the scene where he yells lurid remarks at Adrian his mother turned to him and said I did not raise you to talk to a lady like that She then stormed out of the theatre A song titled You re the Best performed by Joe Esposito was recorded for the film But Stallone rejected it in favor of Survivor s Eye of the Tiger
