annoying For those who ve been reading the entire series rather than merely 36 the penultimate issue which contains the spoiled scene you would know that despite the lack of superheroes and climactic world ending scenarios there s a wonderful romantic comedy that s rare in the modern day comics market It s funny cheesy gripping and moving The finale takes major influence from regular and past Archie comics yet despite the majorly tragic plot point of the penultimate issue the finale retains a cheery air Some may find this too twee and too nicey nicey yet when mainstream comics seem to be focusing more and more upon the negatives with any victory undermined by some form of misadventure which generally seems to lead into the next big crossover or event a bit of loveliness is actually a nice tonic Life with isn t perfect but the series is more than just its climactic moments with there having been thirty five issues of real life happenings before this over the top event It is the ONLY comic this year that I ve eagerly pre purchased Not even Astro City could lay claim to that That s right this year Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson were beaten by Archie Next year my prediction is that an illustration by Justin Beiber will be better than one by Alex Ross who by the way drew a creepy as heck cover for Archie You think I m joking now but I ve just blown the minds of those reading this in December 2015 Music Anathema Distant Satellites Why Anathema aren t a much bigger band than they currently are I will never know with three stunning vocalists in Vincent and Daniel Cavanagh and Lee Douglas They are able to effortlessly and simultaneously create heavy and beautiful songs alongside more expiremental ditties While the prog influences are obvious it s never difficult to listen to Sonic Syndicate Sonic Syndicate It has been four years since their previous album the utterly panned We Rule the Night which despite several decent songs suffered from apparent label interference Now several founding members lighter due to musical differences Sonic Syndicate returned to the melodic death metal metalcore hybrid that made them interesting originally It was also extremely catchy Within Temptation Hydra Symphonic metallers Within Temptation s previous album was a bit of a curveball for the always dependable group toning down those symphonic elements and creating more of a rock metal album with a concept to generally good effect Hydra is somewhat of a blend of their previous record and their recognised style and works wonderfully For this semi return to their general sound however they brought in their friends like ex Killswitch Engage singer Howard Jones and ex Nightwish player Tarja Turunen who lent their vocals to two of the best songs on the album Rapper Xzibit was a change of pace but he works rather well with his vocals fitting into the band s style rather nicely

a piece with a distinct beginning middle and end an exercise akin to dividing fractions into fractions It is a composition of rare craftsmanship Lloyd Cole s Hey Rusty also comes to mind and is fittingly both waved off and welcomed home by that devastatingly simple signature Keuning riff which itself began life as a glint on Flowers keyboard These four tracks are the standouts thereby making Hot Fuss a predominantly front loaded recording and unsurprisingly all four charted within the UK Top 20 though commendations also to vibrant opener and live favourite Jenny Was a Friend of Mine its high fretted bass riff giving Stoermer a rare moment in the spotlight and the Depeche Mode REM fusion of On Top A personal criticism is that just like Jason Statham in Crank Killers tracks tend to die if the BPM drops below a certain level Andy You re a Star and Glamorous Indie Rock Roll lack the finesse to elevate them beyond stodginess though Everything Will Be Alright makes a decent stab at His N Hers era Pulp even if the lyrics lack Cocker s wry wit Sadly after such a precocious introduction the only way was down Yes I know having plonked The Killers into a tin bath and scrubbed them to within an inch of their lives given them a hot meal and clad them in whatever ill fitting garments came to hand it seems heartless to turn on them now I mean who with any modicum of humanity would reject their adopted kid Well time to fess up my opening lines were not as out of character as I let on what with my being dead on the inside and everyone else being in denial this onerous task falls to me With hindsight their decline was inevitable such was Flowers rather spooked reaction to the reaction to Hot Fuss namely that being called the best British band from America provoked a period of intense introspection and possibly a guilt complex that undoubtedly prompted an artistic and personal re evaluation Consequently it was telling that the LA rooted follow up Sam s Town was dubbed a Springsteen rip off despite the best efforts of When You Were Young and Read My Mind On reflection their debut should have been their epitaph They could justifiably have strolled shoulder to shoulder into a Nevada sunset job done after crafting an album voted the best ever debut in a Gigwise Readers Poll It even received a placement in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die as well as going multi platinum in four countries and gracing the UK Album Chart for almost three and a half glorious years of our otherwise worthless miserable existence Instead they became mired in a transatlantic existential crisis Whilst we had them the possibility that they d eventually seek a reconciliation with their natural mom was always the elephant in the room An emotional tug o war ensued which saw them swing from

or invigorating but audiences everywhere fell for its nefarious charm and have done since By 1973 Roger Waters whom had replaced Barrett as Floyd s frontman had entered the beginning of his bleakest and most austere phase as a lyricist and was responsible for most of the writing on the album Though gloomy this was poetry in motion from Waters and throughout Dark Side he excelled in his grim pastures The satire of excess and greed in Money is biting and derisive but it is in no way mind expanding There are also many references to Barrett s dissolution throughout the album most notably on Brain Damage a song about mental illness that s so bleak it will surely inspire listeners to doleful reverie rather than romantic idealism Breathe with the lyrics All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be and Time a cry on the pressures of life slipping by without people realising also conveys this great understanding of the difficulties their former leader faced and that their then modern life was leading to madness Similarly though the music is artfully constructed and produced this is where Dark Side of the Moon excelled over other albums at the time In fact the seemingly conflicting musical content on the album heavily influenced Led Zeppelin s double album Physical Graffiti Using some of the most advanced recording equipment and techniques available at the time the album displayed what could be eloquently achieved with four intelligent musicians utilising electronic instruments and wielding an armoury of sound effects with confident mastery and finesse Achieving feats of trippy unnatural sounds and musical transportation that are all the more amazing because digital production tools were still decades away Floyd managed to create an album that sounded years before its time Speak to Me the album s ninety second long instrumental opener commences the record s virtuosity and sets the tone for the effects laden masterpiece with a gradual fade in of a synthesized heartbeat following through to an enthralling richly layered mix of looped sounds effects demoniac laughter thanks to Peter Watts Floyd s road manager and snatches of grasping speech On the Run is another example of how well Dark Side keeps the listener engaged throughout an instrumental Pulsing synthesizer sounds govern once again incorporating snippets of tape loops distorted sound effects and a wonderfully fitted drum beat On the Run reaches its culmination in what sounds like a nuclear warhead in flight to its intended target before running seamlessly into next track Time The Dark Side of the Moon even after forty years remains an essential album Its not their most endeavouring effort or even their most easily accessible The Wall gets that nod as a complex double album that s burdened with pop hooks Its not their heaviest attempt with the 1977 Animals holding that characteristic Nor is it Pink Floyd s most dulcet offering due to Wish You Were Here being much more evocative in

already set list staples whilst Lipgloss and Do You Remember the First Time both charted within the Top 50 when released as tasters for the album Babies had previously failed to chart in 1991 but the re mixed version included on the album gave the band their first Top 20 hit Lyrically Cocker time shares between protagonist and voyeur from No wonder you re looking thin when all that you live on is lipgloss and cigarettes And scraps at the end of the day when he s given the rest to someone with long black hair Lipgloss to I tried hard to make it work Kissed her where she said it hurt But I was always underneath She s A Lady And occasionally both within one song Babies Mostly though Cocker is the nice guy who never wins either marginalised betrayed or forever waiting to be noticed His ability to empathise with and write insightfully from a female perspective was perhaps the only silver lining to his father having left home when he was seven and consequently spending his formative years primarily in the company of his mother and sister It helps that Pulp have a way with heart wrenching choruses Have You Seen Her Lately sees Cocker imploring a friend to break free of a ruinous relationship but Happy Endings is the epic standout with a huge swirling chorus and killer chord changes and Cocker s diva ish vocal tearing every last emotion from the listener His n Hers parked Pulp at number 9 in the UK Album Chart whilst M People s Elegant Slumming dipped at the line to snatch that year s Mercury Music Prize from them reportedly by a single vote If the band s trajectory was a quiz show it is at this point that it would be appropriate to stop the video and ask What Happened Next For it was just a year later when with a single searing legato of Senior s electric violin Common People exploded into popular culture and teleported the band centre stage of the Britpop phenomenon for which they were never a natural fit making Jarvis Cocker the unlikeliest of sex symbols and a geek chic pioneer in the process Useless Trivia Jarvis Cocker s sister Saskia was a backing vocalist for the band from 1982 1983 Keyboardist Candida Doyle was introduced to the band by her brother Magnus the band s drummer at the time and who subsequently left A deluxe version of the album was released in 2006 featuring a second disc of B sides demos and rarities Babies was only available on the CD version of the album whilst Razzmatazz released as a single in the UK between Babies and Lipgloss was only available on the North American release Related Squabbles AWESOME ALBUMS Mystery Jets Radlands 2012 AWESOME ALBUMS Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon 1973 AWESOME ALBUMS 3 Metallica And Justice for All 1988 AWESOME ALBUMS Patti Smith Horses 1975 AWESOME ALBUMS Weezer

oscillating see saw with lead singer Rivers Cuomo s voice piercing through the noisy morass with words recounting what it means to grow up Buddy Holly boasts one of the biggest pop choruses of 1994 standing out in the midst of the alt rock explosion by belting out the sort of chord progression that Pearl Jam and Soundgarden dared not embrace Meanwhile The World Has Turned and Left Me Here has a vocal melody so memorable that there is more than a passing resemblance to the 2013 single Demon Dance by indie rock band Surfer Blood and In the Garage nods toward an acknowledgement of music obsessed kids playing scrappy punk rock as an embodiment of the teenage experience in modern America at that time Surf Wax America revives the Surfin USA mentality espoused by the Wilson brothers tapping into the L A coast s rich American tradition of teenagers riding hot rods getting drunk and having a good time Even though the tone of the album is predominantly joyful there is an air of melancholy lurking underneath the surface particularly on the offbeat weariness of Say It Ain t So and the woozy intro to Undone The Sweater Song What makes Weezer so special is they cherry picked everything from late 70s early 80s power pop the quiet loud dynamic of the Pixies Nirvana s love of fuzz boxes an appreciation for melodic 60s inspired harmonies squeezing the bubblegum pop formula into the alternative rock palette in exactly the same way Ramones did with punk The result It has sold by the bucket load it is now certified triple platinum having sold 3 3m copies Thanks to this album and their ensuing career it s possible to see Weezer as the inheritors of the Power Pop genre following on from lesser known 70s acts like The Raspberries and Cheap Trick Where they differ I feel is that Weezer have flung Power Pop into the public consciousness far more successfully than their antecedents making it less of a cult and more of a creed Given this it s fair to see the reason why countless bands that embrace the DIY punk ethic continue to be inspired by this album here s looking at you Fountains of Wayne OK Go Ozma etc Putting it simply Weezer s Blue Album is a masterpiece That word gets thrown around a lot these days but in this case I think it holds up Don t believe me Watch this and tell me otherwise Useless Trivia Via Wikipedia Weezer was formed in 1992 and had their first practice on February 14 of that year Their first gig was opening for Keanu Reeves band Dogstar The Buddy Holly video achieved heavy rotation on MTV and went on to win Jonze and the band four MTV Video Music Awards including Breakthrough Video and Best Alternative Music Video and two Billboard Music Video Awards The band has sold 9 200 000 albums in the US and 17 525

  • Awesome Albums: Mystery Jets - Radlands (2012) | SquabbleBox.co.uk - Entertainment Under Attack
announced his departure following the band s sessions for Radlands and now their future seems more uncertain Despite the ubiquitous slide guitar and the huge outline of Texas slapped onto the cover the album does predominantly feel quintessentially Mystery Jets with jangly crisp production and some undeniably infectious hooks coming from songs like The Hale Bop and single Greatest Hits That said the band do fully commit to the concept on a number of tracks that teeter precariously on the border between acceptable and ludicrous but ultimately the result in most instances is unambiguously fun This is no more so than on the opening and eponymous track a full on country epic full of grandiosity switching out a soaring string section for a slide guitar which frequently threatens to descend into irrevocable ridiculousness I heard there s a place where we go to die it s a terribly overrated horse shit shaped hole in the sky in a similar vein to frontman Blaine Harrison s pleas for Rock n Roll in Someone Purer Yet the band s commitment is admirable and the tone just right to ensure repeat listens There are intermittent lulls in proceedings with the appropriately named seventh track The Nothing and the repeated explosions of bug rock choruses in penultimate track Lost In Austin quickly become tedious but for the most part Radlands is a joyful fifty two minutes of indie rock laments forbidden love and whimsy in the Texas sun that ll have you coming back to it for an escape from British monotony The future of the Mystery Jets is uncertain as is the case for any band that has failed to fully captivate the mainstream audience with their populist sound after over a decade but many would be saddened by their loss if they decided to bow out as bands of their breed occupying the space between ludicrous and serious are increasingly few and far between Useless Trivia Via Wikipedia Their original name was The Misery Jets which was taken from an Evening Standard headline Eel Pie Island is under the Heathrow flight path where planes can be frequently spotted It got changed to Mystery Jets when Blaine accidentally misspelled the name while painting it on a drum skin Mystery Jets draws influences from Hall and Oates Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd William Rees has named Robert Fripp Adrian Belew Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie as his guitar inspirations The band had a brief stint with a friend of Williams known only as Max on drums but he was unreliable and for a time a drum machine was used The band advertised on internet message boards for a drummer and found Kapil Trivedi Kapil is not from Eel Pie Island like the rest of the members but rather Wembley North London He found out about the band through his drum teacher Related Squabbles AWESOME ALBUMS Talk Talk The Colour of Spring 1986 A New Day for Bowie REVIEW Queens of the Stone Age Like
