of the Apes Doug Liman Edge of Tomorrow Frank 2014 Gareth Edwards Godzilla Godzilla 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy iron man Iron Man 3 Man of Steel marvel Marvel Cinematic Universe Matt Reeves Planet of the Apes Shane Black Summer Films 2014 Summer Movies 2014 superman tom cruise X Men Days of Future Past Share this post Tweet Previous Article Top 10 Slasher Movie Kills Next Article Better Than Life The Sims Revisited R G Villanueva Summer Blockbuster season this year was fantastic I could cheat a bit and say that my summer movie run started with The Lego Movie despite its February release but from then on it s been quite consistent I m pretty much the same with Dave on what my favourite and least favourites are with Dawn coming at the top and Amazing Spider man 2 being the bottom of the barrel Dawn was just a compelling movie going experience The direction was deft writing was sharp effects were exceptional and characters were endlessly fascinating and well realised AS2 on the other hand was a giant bore I liked the first one to the point where I can say it s much better than Rami s original but the sequel felt like a huge step back Aside from Garfield and Stone s lovely chemistry the story was poorly executed villain was underwhelming dialogue was almost in the level of Shyamalan bad and the way it paced itself made me drowsy With comic book movies Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy kept the MCU consistent and Days of Future Past is the best Xmen film to date I liked Godzilla because I understood that the creators knew that it was a reboot so they wanted to stay faithful for what the original Toho film stood

  • Cinema Classics: Heat (1995) | SquabbleBox.co.uk - Entertainment Under Attack
is full of characters making tough decisions Neil and his crew have to decide whether to walk away from what they do to go the safe route and live out their days in peace with the money they ve stolen so far By contrast Vincent and his colleagues are forced to balance their personal lives against their work as police officers and for Vincent in particular it s extremely hard as his wife wants him to be around for her and their daughter but he knows the only thing he excels at is hunting down crooks But when Neil and Vincent come face to face in an infamous and well written dialogue scene they realise something These two men need each other because their lives would be dull and meaningless otherwise In what is also a bizarre twist the two men share various day to day problems with each other that they don t share with anyone else They also realise that maybe in another life they could have been friends instead of enemies De Niro and Pacino act out the scene perfectly and I really buy into their characters when they butt heads The two sides of the same coin trope is something I am a huge fan of and the characters of McCauley and Hanna fit into that dynamic perfectly Aside from De Niro and Pacino there is a solid supporting cast in Heat Val Kilmer plays Chris Shiherlis Tom Seizemore plays Michael Cherrito and Danny Trejo is Trejo yeah I know go with it They are McCauley s crew of thieves Jon Voight is Nate the man who funds McCauley s operations Mykelti Williamson plays Sergeant Drucker Ted Levine plays Detective Mike Bosko and Wes Studi is Detective Sammy Casals Hanna s fellow police officers There s also notable early performances from William Fichtner as Van Zant a corrupt money launderer and character actor Kevin Gage as Waingro an ex convict who ends up working against McCauley and his crew If you want fine acting you ve come to the right place Overall Michael Mann s Heat is an extremely well told story about people on opposite sides of the law proving that the thin blue line is often a blurred one The action scenes are some of the best ever put on film and though I never feel as though the movie is boring it might be a little slow for some Yet it has plenty of character development that makes you want to see what happens to these people in the end Its one of my favourite films of all time I love the personalities the story the setting and the overall feeling Heat gives me It truly is a modern classic which also brought De Niro and Pacino on screen together properly for the first time I don t think this monumental moment in film history could have been any better In closing Heat truly is one of the all time greats and I

  • Review: Divergent (2014) | SquabbleBox.co.uk - Entertainment Under Attack
One See how easy and trite all this hogwash truly is Wasn t this stuff already covered well enough in Twilight Harry Potter The Hunger Games Sure originality is borderline impossible in this day and age but would a bit of innovation be too much to ask especially since these stories are always about standing out from the norm and not conforming Divergent is in dire need of a more judicious editor as it drags on and on for the better part of 140 minutes While the runtime might seem necessary to flesh out the characters and the story a lot of flab could easily be trimmed as the movie feels punishing rather than rewarding as the finish line approaches Indeed there are at least four or five climaxes when the movie seems to be on the verge of ending only for another complication to arise There s no sense of tension to the build up with a large chunk of the runtime dedicated to humdrum training sequences ripped from the likes of Starship Troopers and Ender s Game while Tris forges relationships with thankless supporting characters who won t matter until the sequel Scene after scene falls flat in need of zippier pacing and a sense of momentum that should accompany this dystopian panic Despite decent production values Divergent feels more like a television show pilot as opposed to a big screen epic Hell some sci fi shows like Almost Human actually have more grandeur than what s glimpsed here Perhaps one of the film s biggest issues is that this futuristic vision is not engaging or exciting in the least it s painfully generic and there s not enough flair to Burger s direction to compensate for the monotonous visual scheme The Hunger Games at least bothered to green screen the cast into some type of vision of the future here Tris and her pals run around cheap sets and bland ruined city locales Admittedly the enterprise does grow more interesting as the action oriented climax approaches and Burger handles the shootouts with some competency but the experience up until this point is too numbing and ponderous that it doesn t matter much in the grand scheme of things Although Woodley has proven talent she s an unremarkable protagonist here paling in comparison to Jennifer Lawrence It s unclear whether the blame falls with Burger or Woodley but Beatrice Tris is shockingly one note from start to finish showing no palpable growth as she develops from meek girl to determined revolutionary Not to mention the completely contrived love story between Beatrice and Four gains precisely no traction rather than a relationship which grows organically the subplot feels awkwardly shoehorned in for the sake of formula The rest of the actors are utterly personality free and there isn t a bad looking specimen in sight the casting call must have explicitly stated abs required James is simply one of those Channing Tatum types who s destined to become confused
