  • Review: Babymetal - Metal Resistance (2016) | SquabbleBox.co.uk - Entertainment Under Attack
power metal seems a tad bland as a follow up although there s no arguing the fine musicianship shown by the Kami band Meta Taro is the same and despite some hints towards folk metal this marching song just doesn t go anywhere From Dusk to Dawn a metalcore song at its heart is a stunning semi ballad and without a doubt the biggest curveball of them all even featuring some English lyrics My only whinge is that they overdo the electro breakdowns taking away from the track s impact somewhat The song that would be the least out of place on their first album is GJ a nu metal pop song with Yui and Moa s vocal contributions more apparent here Sis Anger contains a rather pointless spoken word intro before morphing into a straightforward metal song This is what doom would sound like sped up No Rain No Rainbow showcases Sumetal s beautiful voice whilst paying homage to Queen A piano section you can imagine Freddie singing to and a guitar section that s almost note for note Brian May The one problem is that while it s enjoyable it s also a little bit too formulaic Tale of the Destinies is the one song where the metal and pop sections seem to be at odds A shame but I m still impressed that it took eleven songs for that problem to occur The piano section in the middle should have been cut however serving no point but to detract from the rest of the song The One English Version is as might be expected an English language version of The One which appears in their native tongue on the Japanese edition of the album The thrill or whatever it is of hearing them sing in English is kinda ruined by it being rather boring It is by and far and away the least metal song on the album despite containing some almost Dream Theatre esque swellings though it ll no doubt become a sing a long anthem live As a studio song however it just doesn t hit the spot Those already aware of Babymetal will surely know the structure of the band s style from the previous album and again it remains mostly the same with Sumetal providing the majority of the lead vocals whilst Yui and Moametal are mostly background with the occasional chance to prove their own chops There s a real maturity in both the songwriting and the group s own singing abilities compared to the first album with the release as a whole coalescing and working together Despite continuing to have a wide range of influences be it Doom or EDM there are some stand out moments here alongside experimentations that don t quite work yet the metal and pop motifs actually compliment each other rather than competing Metal Resistance is a fun album and is definitely a marked improvement on the also fun Babymetal with the band finding their voice No

at the screen and most of it sticks perhaps regrettably for the effects heavy conclusion made when computer graphics weren t all that hot The casting is perhaps the weakest aspect of the movie and where much of the cheesiness resides but the most important role was well chosen In the lead part Zane commits himself well and keeps his dignity in that ridiculous costume but it s interesting to note that he almost lost out to horror movie legend Bruce Campbell The Evil Dead star tested for the role and documented his time on the Paramount lot in his hilarious book Confessions of a B Movie Actor No studio in their right mind would screen test just one actor so in my case it boiled down to two people me and Billy Zane Since the desire was to create a franchise out of this character the project must have gone out to every bankable hero type in town but for whatever reason Billy and I wound up on the ticket I had two choices wait by the phone and be tormented by every ring or get as far away from it as I could I chose the latter and wandered the hills behind my house until the big verdict came down thirty six hours later Paramount had found their man and it was Billy Zane Do not pass Go Do not collect 100 As much fun as it would have been to see Campbell in the role perhaps it was wise of producer Robert Evans Chinatown to go another way Reportedly Zane was a fan of the character and campaigned for the part for years having been introduced to the comic strips on the set of Dead Calm The script which was originally written by Boam as a parody of the material doesn t give him much to work with on an intellectual level but Zane performs all of the derring do as well as can be expected There s not a substantial difference between his dual identities as Kit Walker and The Phantom but this isn t a half arsed performance apparently the costume designers were going to mould muscles into the suit as they did on Batman but the actor promptly filled it without any enhancements Having taken a lot of the flack for this film s poor performance it s surprising to see how decent he is here James Cameron cast him in Titanic 1997 based on his work in The Phantom and he s probably the film s most underrated asset As Kit s former flame the star of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer Kristy Swanson gets to do a lot of pouting as damsel Diana Palmer The filmmakers try to make out that she s tough and resourceful but she s never far away from a perilous situation in true Lois Lane fashion She does however look stupendous in 30s garb and Swanson makes the most of a thinly written character As does

gimmick but it really does invite quite a lot of unique platforming scenarios and keeps the game from being 64 all over again Just as the yellow C buttons were used in Mario s previous 3D adventure here it allows the player to rotate the camera seamlessly rather than in large turns by holding left and right and zoom in and out from Mario by holding up and down Moreover he can combine zooming in and out and rotating the camera by holding the stick diagonally Finally the player can view things from a stationary Mario s perspective via the Y button The levels are large sandbox areas connected by a world hub Delfino Plaza as was the case in Super Mario 64 Though they all follow the tropical island theme each one presents a unique structure and visuals to vary the experience Every now and then the player will come upon secret levels which feature classic style platforming courses that win the prize for the most difficult parts of the game Most of the time a 1 Up mushroom can be attained early on in each such level giving the player a means by which he or she can attempt it over and over The levels from the game involve a number of different platforming elements though tightrope walking seems to be the most reoccurring With FLUDD at Mario s environmental disposal platforming that would normally be downright frustrating can be worked around except in the secret stages where Mario can t use it whilst some feats that are just plain unachievable without the device are made possible and in fact mandatory to collecting many a Shine Sprite There are seven levels in all each of them containing eleven Shine Sprites the hub containing sixteen three are collected at miscellaneous points and twenty four can be bought at ten blue coins each By spreading blue coins throughout the gameplay is extended as a significant number of stars are unattainable without collecting them There are 120 stars in all making this formula the staple for 3D Mario series Pervading throughout the game is a decidedly tropical theme made no less involving because of the visuals and score All of Isle Delfino is bright and vibrant with detail that s leagues ahead of that present in Super Mario 64 The music is relaxing and evokes the same reaction from the player as one would expect from the music played while on vacation in Hawaii or the Caribbean The resulting tone is much like a chilled summer break Sandwiched inbetween the likes of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy Sunshine is often considered the lesser of the 3D Mario series But even if that s the case the game still has plenty of space below them to be quality in its own right It brings its own gameplay and atmosphere to the table with the distance in time between 64 and Sunshine allowing Nintendo EAD to collect their thoughts and do
