  • How to choose a Bike
this shop we all prefer trigger systems but twistgrips do have a following and most bike manufacturers use both Multi Purpose Bikes Do you need a mountain bike Broadly speaking if you are expecting to do off road riding in a hard possibly dangerous manner then yes you definitely do need a mountain bike We talk about mountain bikes in the next section Hybrids On the other hand if you want a bike that will let you explore country lanes bridleways and farm tracks but you expect to ride in a more gentle controlled way then a hybrid is probably the bike for you They are a cross between mountain bikes and road bikes Because they don t need to be as strong as a mountain bike they can be built a little lighter and this together with thinner tyres makes them easier to ride on the roads They are however quite capable of being ridden on reasonably good off road surfaces at high speeds and can cope with quite rough surfaces if used sensibly Hybrids tend to have a relaxed upright riding position but still have the powerful brakes and hill climbing gears of the mountain bike They usually have traditional rigid front forks but some are available with suspension forks for comfort For many adults the Hybrid is the perfect multi function bike Unfortunately although most bike shops routinely use the term hybrid the bike manufacturers nearly always choose to call them something different Some call them Trail Bikes Marin one of our top brands call them City Bikes But you wouldn t want it to be too straightforward would you Comfort Bikes Confused yet You soon will be For some years now there has been another category of bikes the Comfort Bike Essentially a Comfort Bike is a compromise between a hybrid and mountain bike It has a very upright riding position fat but fairly slick tyres and a very comfy saddle Typically you would use a comfort bike for the same sort of terrain as a hybrid It will give you a very cushioned ride but will be heavier and seem a bit slower than the hybrid The popularity of comfort bikes seems to have waned in the last few years and more people seem attracted by the lighter nippier feel of good quality Hybrids but we have both types of bike in stock so you can see them for real and have a ride on them if you wish To see our range click Hybrid Comfort and Straight Bar Road Urban Bikes Still hanging on Right Try this one Yet another category to spring up in recent years was the Urban bike A variation on the classic mountain bike it was developed as a heavy duty machine for cycle couriers to use in cities bouncing off buses taxis kerbs etc etc Because it is a tarmac machine it has slick tyres and doesn t have any suspension Urban bikes have the aggressive low handlebar position

  • The History of Stanley Fearn Cycles
The shop occupied part of the building in Crown Square which is nowadays Holland Barrett s Photograph by Mr C R Taylor Courtesy of picturethepast org uk BSA motorbike catalogue from Stanley Fearn s 1920 The machines range from 90 to 130 but the average adult weekly wage back then was only about 2 Virtually nobody in the town would have a car and at these prices a new motorbike would have been an impossible luxury for most people It was probably a very rare event for Stanley to sell one To see all the catalogue please click here Geoff with a Fearn Special strangely this never caught on c1932 Stanley s eldest son Geoff joined the business in 1930 straight from school at 14 He served in the RAF as an aircraft fitter during the war returning to become a partner The shop was then renamed Stanley Fearn and Son Geoff serving a customer with petrol c1950 As well as cycles and motor cycles the shop also had a thriving petrol business with four pumps In those days there were lots of small petrol stations scattered around Today Matlock has only three stations but as late as 1965 the town had at least eight Our pumps were sited next to the footpath with swingarms which piped petrol high over pedestrians to vehicles at the roadside Not surprisingly you do not see this sort of thing any more Young Andrew left that tap running again then c1965 Immediately behind the shop runs the River Derwent In about 1980 major flood defenses were completed in Matlock Prior to that hardly a winter went by without a flood scare Sometimes the water barely broke over the bank but sometimes it was a bit more serious As a young boy Geoff s son Andrew remembers thinking the floods were really exciting For some reason his Dad did not think they were such fun Geoff as many of our customers will remember him with his trademark white coat and flat cap c1985 Andrew joined the business in 1977 Geoff continued working full time until he was seventy and then worked part time until he suffered a stroke five years later Today These days we are a limited company Stanley Fearn Cycles Ltd but we usually just refer to ourselves as Stanley Fearn s We are now purely a cycle shop no petrol or motorbikes but the modern cycling scene is a very exciting and technically advanced thing In recent years there have been massive advances in equipment and frame materials We stock several leading makes and are proud to be the leading dealer in the area for Trek and Marin who are two of the best brands available in Britain today Both brands have very impressive mountain and hybrid bike ranges Road racing bikes have made quite a comeback in recent years and our leading road brand is Trek See our cycling pages for more information on all our bike brands For over eighty

pleasant family ride around the edge of the dams which is only rough in parts and does not involve too much climbing Derbyshire Towns Villages and Stately Homes If you are stopping in Derbyshire for a while and want to do any sightseeing the county has some lovely little villages and several small towns with nice friendly pubs to quench your thirst Many of the villages have annual well dressing festivals a tradition unique to Derbyshire where the village wells are decorated with pictures made from dried flowers usually depicting biblical scenes If you are interested in stately homes we have two of the best examples in England within close range of Matlock About six miles up the A6 towards Bakewell is Haddon Hall a home of the Duke of Rutland It is a wonderfully dark and atmospheric old manor hall and has been used in numerous film and TV productions A couple of miles away from Haddon is Chatsworth House home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and probably Britain s most spectacular stately home It is set in beautiful surroundings and happily for mountain bikers the Chatsworth estate seems reasonably bike friendly with several excellent bridleways passing through it Tourist Information We hope we have whetted your appetite for the Peak District If you are thinking of coming for a holiday here are the local tourist information centre details Matlock Tourist Information Centre Crown Square Matlock DE4 3AT Phone 01629 583388 Fax 01629 584131 Open March to October 9 30am 5 00pm seven days a week and November to February 10am 4pm seven days a week Cafes Tom and Aidan have spent many happy hours researching eating places in the Peak and recommend trying the following Grindleford Station Cafe open 7 days a week every week Monyash

  • Our Service Package
checking for tightness You can be confident we will give the bike a proper service and not just a five minute run through Priority Servicing We are well known for the quality of our repair work and wheel building and sometimes particularly in the summer we can get very busy With a Stanley Fearn s bike you get priority treatment so we service your bike quickly Warranty Work Even the best bike in the world can go wrong occasionally and sometimes faults occur which are a bit borderline as to whether they can be claimed for under warranty We have gained many customers over the years who had originally bought bikes elsewhere only to find that their shop didn t want to know when anything went wrong We will never take this attitude with you We will always do our best to help you and not brush you off with feeble excuses Because we concentrate on a few core brands rather than trying to stock everything under the sun we have built up good relationships with our suppliers This means they look after us and this can make a tremendous difference if we need a favour on a warranty claim to look after you Routine Servicing Menu Pricing Bit of a misleading heading here sorry Menu Pricing for servicing is something we have considered but prefer to avoid Typical menus might say Full Service 75 for instance This will usually include stripping down and re greasing all bearings etc etc but importantly it does not include the price of any parts The condition of any two used bikes can vary tremendously With Bike A you could perhaps do everything that needed to be done including parts for under 40 Bike B might be so badly worn that it is not worth repairing at all because the repairs will come to more than the bike is worth Bike A s bearings might be in obviously good condition and you could not seriously justify the time and expense of stripping them down The menu Full Service is relieving you of 75 when 40 should have been enough Bike B is a different beast altogether It s bearings do all need overhauling but they are actually so badly worn that they will still be rough after re greasing Most of them badly need replacing The cost of bearing assemblies is not included in the menu price It doesn t stop there either The chain and cassette the rear cogs are totally worn out and one of the chainrings ie front cogs too The brake pads and the gear cables need replacing On a really cheap supermarket mail order bike the parts would still cost about 100 so even if the shop agrees to not charge extra labour for fitting the parts the full Service has now become 175 probably a lot more than the bike cost new On a high quality bike the parts would come to over 200 so your Full Service
