  • Is social media all fun and no fees?
the medical communications sector recruit More and more social media is increasingly used in recruitment research by Stepstone Solutions has shown that 60 of surveyed employers already use some form of social media as a recruitment tool With CV databases such as Reed CV Library and eMed Careers now widely available to agencies a number of candidates are reluctant to post their CV online fearful that it ll be seen by their current employer On top of this in a sector where everyone knows everyone not unlike the residents of Coronation Street confidentiality is a necessity This is where social sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn come in handy It allows recruiters companies and candidates to engage with one another in a more casual way Social media sites are also used by companies to find out more about their candidates what they say who they follow and who is following them But all that aside social media as recruitment tool offers an even bigger bonus it saves the pennies PharmaTimes recently spoke to Carlos Quevedo Senior Director EMEA staffing and operational excellence at Quintiles Sites such as LinkedIn allow direct contact with a much wider group of candidates who are better informed about the opportunities available to them This helps to decrease the cost of recruitment as it reduces reliance on costly print advertising and agency costs The PharmaTimes survey found that 73 of respondents use social media to promote job vacancies 14 of respondents use social media occasionally and 13 rarely use it or don t use it at all As demand for talent surpasses supply and with people sticking to the same jobs for longer employers and recruiters have to think outside the box to find talent The use of social media for recruitment is set to increase

  • Healthcare communications agencies: do they prefer agency-side experience?
only recruited one candidate from client side they offered a number of reasons The agency and client side environments are very different some agencies believe that candidates would struggle to adjust or won t at all Agencies provide a variety of work whereas client side tends to provide stability but lack variety Team work is an enjoyable and important aspect of agency working and many believe that in house candidates haven t experienced working in that way before People from an agency background tend to have lots of contacts who they can lean for help in their day to day role In house workers tend to lose contacts over time as the public they work with are healthcare communications agencies rather than journalists etc Whether the perception matches reality is a much bigger debate But my client insists that exceptional candidates can break into the industry whether they re agency side experienced or not So are healthcare communications agencies missing out on exceptional client side candidates I think it s possible many candidates have worked in house and agency side at some point so know what to expect And if the candidate has the right competencies I ve no doubt they can adapt Hang on a minute Are healthcare communications agencies open to in house candidates and it s the recruiters that are the problem In house candidates working client side usually have good relationships with agencies so maybe in house candidates are approaching agencies directly excluding the need for recruiters involvement What s certain is that yes it s one career but healthcare communications agencies and client side are two different worlds What do you think Let me know solutions starmedical co uk 01628 581 240 Sign up for our newsletter at the bottom right hand side of this

  • How to write a good medical communications CV
away from them Managers recruit people to reduce hassle from their own jobs Say for example you re an account manager a good example of an account management achievement would be In 2009 I quickly established myself as the key client contact building an excellent relationship with client X in the European Brand Team ensuring a smooth seamless transition from the existing Account Director An Account Director or MD will read this and think if I can take someone on who will reduce my work load that ll give me the time I need to focus on other areas of the company such as new business client pitches managing bigger projects elsewhere etc Examples of Key Achievements Pitches you ve led Plans you came up with were involved in that generated revenue PM Society for example award won in X year Be specific ok you were an account executive manager director but why do you stand out Include examples Client testimonials Examples of projects you ve worked on Plus if you re not bound by confidentiality mention the clients you ve worked with your potential employer might be working with the same a similar client so it ll be easy to envisage the value you can add To summarise don t just write your job spec anyone can do that and let s face it everyone in the industry knows what an account manager does What did you bring to the role that no one else in the team company did Lastly how many pages This will vary depending on your level of experience A junior graduate level candidate should be no longer than 2 A4 pages But no matter how much experience most people agree a CV should never be longer than 5 pages As a community med comms
