predecessor to the modern fanboy the 19th Century equivalent of shouting You can t handle the truth and Show me the money to that Tom Cruise guy A groovy dream sequence segues us into the remaining four score and seven years of running time where Lincoln battles to pass a House amendment to his Emancipation Proclamation forever ensuring freedom for slaves Abe encounters some passionate anti abolitionist opposition from Congress but he hushes them all with his unyielding equanimity his stalwart affectedness and enough anecdotes and reminiscences to torment a sadist Daniel Day Lewis does a fine job of portraying the most compassionate man in the history of the Americas apeing Lincoln s awkward physicality with a reportedly stunning accuracy Lincoln was believed to suffer from a rare genetic disease called MEN2B and if you read up on the symptoms you ll see that Lincoln fits the bill with uncanny constitution Knowing that the great man was probably living undiagnosed with the trappings of a physically stifling disease makes Lewis s teetering performance profoundly challenging to watch You just want to sit the man down and bring him a nice cup of tea Sally Field plays a woefully strained and desperate Mrs Lincoln while Tommy Lee Jones and his hairpiece don t forget the hairpiece breathes the only real life into this costume box of hair and tweed by delivering all the best cranky scowls Everybody else comes and goes one guest star after another until they all look the same beneath the hirsuteness Sets are theatrically contrived with props that look like they have never been touched by human hands let alone actually used and the unrelenting dialogue is weightier than a polly s election purse Lovers of politics and specifically American politics should adore Lincoln it is intelligent

them alongside one another in a tempered philosophical journey In other words Samsara is not just a pretty face Woven through the narrative is the hum of Buddhist tenet with samsara or the ever turning wheel of life at its epicentre Thematically Samsara serves as a guided meditation on the cycle of birth suffering death and rebirth and the significance or insignificance of man most prominently represented by the creation and destruction of a Tibetan Buddhist sand mandala Along the way the film examines the ferocious power of nature materialism religion and finding beauty in unexpected places such as a Filipino prison or a Chinese factory production line Some of the images are troubling and evocative all of them are lavish Filmed in twenty five different countries over five years the scale of this enormous project is enough to boggle the mind Pictures of a Javanese sulphur mine seem an impossibility due to the treacherous nature of the geography while others such as the pilgrimage to Mecca seem an equally arduous challenge of paperwork and approval If there is any disappointment to Samsara it is that some sequences such as the tattooed man cuddling his baby feel a little too
