Color Palettes the principal is the same and you can search by colour too I am now looking at everything differently what else could inspire a colour scheme Last week I walked past this cute camper van with these retro 60 s curtain the curtains even matched the orange camper van love a bit of co ordination What do you think Could the colours on the curtains be a colour scheme for a blanket I would love some of my own personal photos to inspire a blanket s colour scheme But how Well folks I found this magic tool that helps you pick out the shades from your photos and present you with an awesome colour scheme Check out my results I am hooked and spent far too long playing around with it Lets start off with that photo above You see those little white dots Well those are the colours the software picked out Now I love this because if I had to choose the colours myself I wouldn t have thought to include some of the beiges or the greys at all and the colours combined do work but to be honest its not inspiring me right now But its a lovely palette for a blanket one day How about a photo on that is on Tea Crafting s homepage Check out the results from that pretty neat huh Yes I am getting addicted to this So I thought I would test out an actual photo of people here is a selfie of Jasper and I and it worked I love the results I am officially hooked This is a lovely muted wintery palette for a baby boys blanket I have on my list to crochet I will probably change the order of the colours but I like it as as base to start from Now I just have to hunt for some yarn in similar shades So if you want to test this out head on over to the Play Crafts website here and have some fun with their Palette Builder Tool But if you don t have time to play with the builder and then find the yarn which can be tricky then have a look at pre made packs such as The Homemakery s Yarn Packs This one in particular is one of my favourites inspired by Orla Keily And finally my other go to for choosing colour schemes is looking at the selvedge of fabrics Ever noticed those coloured circles that pick out the colours of the pattern on the fabric Looks at those circles for some inspiration and ideas There you go this is a long post but I hope it s given you some useful information and that it will indeed be useful to you in choosing you next colour scheme Are there any other things you have found inspiration from when embarking on your next knitted or crochet blanket Filed Under Crochet DIY Knitting Tagged With crochet knitting yarn Demistfying the Yarn Label by jane Leave a Comment 11 May 20 15 Never chuck the yarn label away I say to all our beginner knitters when teaching a class There is a wealth of information you can get from the label It s so disappointing when you buy some yarn you ve fallen in love with made a gorgeous item and then accidentally felted shrunk it in the washing machine because you didn t realise it was hand wash only worse still given the blanket to someone who wasn t told it was hand wash only and they have shrunk it The label gives us information on the needle size to use crochet and knitting how to care for it i e hand wash or dry clean for example the dye lot shade number and weight of the yarn also Often there is also a tension square and always you are told the fibre of the yarn which is what determines how you care for it Cheaper yarns will be made from man made fibre such as acrylic and as a general rule you could say the more expensive the yarn is the more natural it is However I know when you want to knit or crochet an item for someone you may want to splash out on some gorgeously expensive super soft wool but before you make that purchase do think about who you are making the item for For example a new mummy won t want to be hand washing a beautiful blanket you made her each time it gets dirty so look at the yarn label and make sure its machine washable Pure 100 wool fibre will most likely need to be hand washed whereas acrylic or mixtures of man and natural fibres can be thrown into the machine Apart from how to care for the wool there is some other really important information on the label lets take a look This symbol tells us the recommended knitting needle size for this yarn Here you can see that UK needle size 5 5mm 6 5mm is recommended it then also tells you that the US size 9 10 5 If you crochet you can assume that size 5 5mm to 6 5mm crochet hook is recommended This grid is call the tension square and tells you that if you used 5 5mm 6 5mm needles and cast on 14 stitches and knitted 20 rows of garter stitch then your square should measure 10 x 10cm Tension squares are always 10 x 10cm And lastly these are the washing instructions wash at 40 degrees you will also notice its 100 acrylic too If you look at the original photo at the start of this post you will see some other instructions such as do not iron and cool tumble dry Filed Under Crochet Knitting Tagged With
