  • THE ALMIGHTY - Psycho Narco - The Final Word
a new bassist Gav Gray And some 15 months down the line Psycho Narco doesn t come close to the previous heights of 1994 s superlative Crank CD Despite containing 14 songs you come away feeling short changed curiously empty From the opening Galvanize to the closing Million Times Nothing this album is a poor representation of the Almighty s strengths Its got big chords melodic choruses and puns ahoy but it s the same old same old Its nothing new nothing you haven t hear before Much like last years The Almighty was a refining of their sound on the previous Just add life CD Psycho Narco is just a further refinement with very little musical progression Unfortunately this seems to wear its influences so blatantly on its sleeve its it may as well be a cover s albums in places 427 Freak horsepower is a note for note copy of the main riff of Buzzcock s Ever fallen in love Ruse shows potential to be a single but let down by a repetitive and monotonous vocal line and Soul on a Roll is simply a rewrite of the opening of 1993 s Out of Season note for note Recycling other people s songs can be seen as homage recycling your own that s desperation And Hate the World for all its brilliant title never lives up to it s title derivative and unoriginal predictable chord changes Waiting for Earthquakes is simply a rejig of 1993 s Jesus loves you I could go on and tell you which other songs from their backcatalogue they ve rewritten but there s no point The Almighty could be at times an essential and brilliant band 1994 s Crank for example was a brilliantly brash barrage of britmetal and NYC punk This is

  • THE ALMIGHTY - The Almighty (2000) - The Final Word
when 6 weeks earlier they d supported Metallica themselves their momentum faded away after a couple of years of treading water careerwise despite moving on in musical bounds and stride However on this album there seems to be little sign of any stratospheric career change in sight Showing little progess from where they left off in 1996 the new line up seems to have stalled musically Coming on somewhere like a cross between The Clash The Ruts The Ramones and Rocket From The Crypt it has all the right ingredients just put together in the wrong order While the metal scene has swung towards Slipknot and Deftones The Almighty seem to remain stuck in 1977 and 1996 simultaneously The opening Broken Machine proves to open some savage intent before getting into a groove Metallica s Sad But True would have loved to have but couldn t achieve chock full of melody and a standout track Curiously it is one of the few songs written by new guitarist Nick Parsons ex of Whatever I m in Love with Revenge comes along like the breakneck punk of Ramones seemingly like most of the album is on 1950s rock and roll classics fucked up on distortion pedals and speed but sounding fuck all like Motorhead and more like The Ruts This general mood of discontentment and recycled riffs permeate the entire album and whilst it is indubitably heavy the album remains a pale imitation of their previous works lacking the original and spark of before How much of this is due to the lacklustre production by Ronan McHugh is debatable though whereas some material especially the frentic Stop and USAK 47 Ricky Warwick s inability to write a song without puns hasn t stopped yet shines though despite the flat compressed sound Its

  • CYPRESS HILL - Stoned Raiders CD - The Final Word
HILL Stoned Raiders CD Written by Mark Reed Monday 25 October 2004 They re past their best In fact they ve probably been past their best for a long time Last years Live At The Filmore contained a handful of recent songs and was comprised almost in its entireity of choice cuts from the first two albums Only two songs from the return to form Skull N Bones were on that The new one follows much the same path as Skull N Bones a handful of promising tracks recorded with the rock band SX 10 that showcase a unique and intriguing style and the majority of the rest are fairly unadventurous dated hip hop tracks relying on tired beats samples from previous records and uninspiring mixing There s samples off Insane In The Brain and even a song called Here Is Something You Can t Understand living off Past Glories They even wheel on a whole bunch of guest rappers much like they did with the fairly dull IV album to try and boost the excitement factor and it fails completely Frankly it s not that good If you like Cypress Hill its not good or bad just the next
