  • Matt Berry - Wolverhampton Civic Bar 17th February 2007 - The Final Word
Bainbridge in the first series of The Mighty Boosh Todd Rivers in Garth Marenghi s Dark Place as well as both appearing in and co writing Snuff Box with fellow Booshist Rich Fulcher Matt also has written music for the afore mentioned programmes and released two albums the latest of which Opium for which this tour is to promote Live this was definitely a proper music gig as opposed to a comedy event Sure some of the lyrical content is downright hilarious especially when heard through Berry s booming voice a voice you could imagine as perfect for audio books but it was pure gig Track after track Matt backed by Jonas 3 brewed up a veritable banquet of MOR funk and 70 s rock all in a fun way without ever coming across as kitsch or clichéd Once the gig finished and whilst not in full on interview mode I collared Matt backstage for a bit of a chinwag We discussed how the responses to this his first music tour have been It seems they ve all gone down fantastic which I can agree with after watching the sell out Civic bar s response Due to this response Matt

  • Modest Mouse - Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall 25th May 2007 - The Final Word
ship even sank whereas my partner loves The Smiths which was ideal as this was the first chance to see the new Modest Mouser Johnny Marr play with the band Unusually for us we got to the gig early so that we could watch Wild Billy Childish and the Musicians of the British Empire the evenings support band True to his reputation Wild Billy didn t turn up and no reason for this was announced Another band were ushered onto the stage in replacement The Crimea I d like to say how these were but the sound quality was dire so I decided that any judgement I made would be unfair This carried through to Modest Mouse s set also It took them an age to come onstage frustrating the audience to no end When they did arrive the sound was appalling You couldn t hear frontman Isaac Brock over the aural soup that the sound desk was producing from the two drummers numerous synths bass and Johnny Marr s distinctive guitar Oh yes Johnny Marr If you re a sound engineer and you have a guitar legend in the band you re working for you MUST wash out all

  • Gary Numan - Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall 10th March 2008 - The Final Word
Old is the new new of late with many bands hawking classic albums around the worlds venues in an act that has more to do with than reminiscing the good old days rather than making a tidy profit I have got that the right way round haven t I Listening to Replicas now it does sound very dated but then Numan was a pioneer and we only have to listen to any beefed up electronic track over the last ten years to hear his influence This tour is billed as the first time that Replicas has been played live Ever This is good news to me as I m not a Numan fan but I really like the first two thirds of Replicas Like the recent Human League Dare tour I know when I ll be leaving Unfortunately this is Gary Numan and Gary has decided to buck the trend of playing the album in it s entirety in order of it s appearance on wax but to move them around and incorporate b sides into the mix This isn t such a good thing for me because what I experienced was the dullest electro rock I ve heard in a long time having to wait nine songs in before even hearing Down in the Park a song so brilliantly covered by Marilyn Manson that Numan feels he should cover Manson s cover Bizarre And so after ten tracks of average and one of genius I m assaulted by two instrumentals and they don t half drag Visually there s some nice stage lighting but that only remains interesting for around seven minutes when the music is so crushingly dull The session musicians that make up the band are poseurs of the highest order so watching them was out of
