  • Nature Conservation Update 2015 - The Oak Barn, Hittisleigh Barton
Saw an occasional one Brimstone Occasional one early in year and an individual from a second brood in September Dingy Skipper Present in small numbers Small coppers commas green hairstreak Some nice specimens Not seen but previously recorded Small pbf brown hairstreak Birds 2015 was the first year since we came here in 2000 that we have had no house martins their constant movement in and out of their nests is an essential part of the summer and they were missed Our house sparrow population has increased and some commandeered the house martin nests before they arrived which may have put the returning birds off Small groups of martins inspected the nests and then moved on I intend to knock down the old nests to prevent the sparrows taking up residence in the hope that the birds will return in 2016 We did have several swallow nests and resident barn owls which fledged 5 young in two broods Reptiles We found grass snakes in the farm yard for the first time in at least ten years so we are hopeful that the population in our central valley is such that they are moving out into the surrounding countryside We have some large females which are quite impressive when seen under tins Land Management Haymeadow The haymeadow was full of yellow rattle and I collected buckets of seed and scattered it round other grassy areas We did not cut hay for the first time in many years and are relying on extensive grazing to control the grass in the hope that it will benefit the grass snakes The south facing slope of the central valley has waxcaps and horse mushrooms and there was a spectacular fairy ring of 25 parasol mushrooms in October Animals One or both of the Shetland cows are pregnant and we are expecting calves in late January They are Limousin crosses as we had a bull available Similarly we have crossed the Shetland sheep this year with a Vendeen ram which a neighbour had which will mean slightly bigger offspring that are hopefully less wild Despite very expensive fencing hunt the sheep is a regular pastime Pigs We had a huge apple crop and put some pigs in the orchard to clear up the windfalls The pigs ignored the apples but were very adept at ploughing up the grass we hurriedly removed them before they turned the whole orchard into a muddy mess Weather Am writing this note at the end of December when we have both daffodils and primroses in flower in the hedges annual vetches are in flower The sparrows are prospecting for nest sites and the weather is incredibly mild and wet to date we have had one frost this winter Overall position Since 2000 we have carried out many conservation projects and have seen the benefit in maintaining the diversity of the wildlife on the farm and we have a range of animals including red deer otters dormice hares kingfishers barn owls lesser
