  • "Black Sam" Bellamy - The Oak Barn, Hittisleigh Barton
    mate of Blackbeard and captained a pirate ship in the early eighteenth century capturing over 50 ships in one year Whilst sailing to collect his pregnant girlfriend from Massachusetts his ship the Whydah went down in sight of the beach where she was waiting with all its fabulous treasure It was found in the 1980s and 90s and the wreck is the first complete pirate ship recovered in American waters there is a touring exhibition in the States of the recovered artefacts and booty Black Sam Bellamy s other claims to fame are that he added the crossbones to the most popular version of the Jolly Roger and apparently Captain Jack Sparrows hair in the Pirates of the Carribean was styled to resemble his There is an extensive entry on Wikipaedia for Black Sam Bellamy and people occasionally turn up to visit the church yard where his mother is buried and the church in which Sam was christened including Vic Reeves a well known pirate buff The Oak Barn stands immediately next to the church and the Bellamy family would have passed the gates to the farm on their way to the christening The loss of the Whydah is commemorated
