  • The Moral Maze of Marketing
our fast paced lives and that we cannot assume that we the public do have the information or the inclination to make fully informed choices The convenience of ready meals and TV dinners has been shown to be responsible for the decline in families eating together which in turn is leading to breakdown in communication skills and family life Not something that was foreseen at the outset I m sure But we should remember that markets are not passive or static Consumers or the market can also play a stronger role in this process by demanding better controls and more honest information on products and packaging Government may also need to play a more authoritative role Ultimately being an optimist by nature I am hopeful that marketing will respond to this problem by recognising the real needs of society and developing and promoting products that will reverse these negative trends There are some small signs of the start of this process through the introduction of healthy options and games that encourage active rather than sedentary lives e g Wii fit which putting cynicism aside is a step in the right direction In the meantime my personal experience with working with many marketers in businesses in the UK is that they have integrity and honesty in abundance So I shall hold my head high and continue to defend marketing as an essential and positive aspect of our market economy Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 8873 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content

  • Marketing Myth #2: Customers don't like being contacted too often
you have a list that you are sending messages to regularly and if you are tracking who opens your emails you may get downhearted and question the point of doing it when there appear to be large numbers of people not reading your efforts but not bothering to unsubscribe either These people are usually referred to as emotionally un subscribed And some e marketing organisations recommend you cull your list as including these people in your statistics make your results look poor However in an article at MarketingProfs I came across another view that these people should be termed un emotionally subscribed meaning they remain interested but just don t need what you are selling right now Ignoring your messages until they are ready to buy is easier than finding you again at a later date They quote some interesting statistics Ten percent of one company s revenue in 2008 came from subscribers who opened not a single email in 2007 An outstanding offer from another company generated 70 000 in sales from subscribers who had not opened the previous 25 to 40 email messages This makes sense to me I get quite a few promotional emails that I don t open or respond to right away As long as you provide an easy opt out mechanism then I think it is safe to assume that your customers are thinking that they might need you someday just not yet The bottom line is that your business needs a planned contact strategy for leads prospects and customers how you do it needs to be right for you and them but being afraid of being annoying is not a good excuse for no contact at all Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 4790 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of

  • Snake Oil and Marketing
too hard The idea that you need to learn how to do something and then gain practical experience and true expertise by applying it over time is laughed at But in truth nothing is that easy Despite the hype we all know there are few overnight successes or ways to get rich without breaking sweat Or we d all be millionaires by now My advice is cultivate a healthy scepticism and look beyond the headlines to look for evidence to back up the claims If it sounds too good to be true it probably is From Wikipedia Snake Oil is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat joint pain However the most common usage of the phrase is as a derogatory term for compounds offered as medicines which implies they are fake or ineffective The expression is also applied metaphorically to any product with exaggerated marketing but questionable or unverifiable quality or benefit Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 1690 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content marketing mea culpa 15 June 2015 21 27 I m just home from a day s training in the latest in digital marketing strategy and I m racked Mar 2015 One to One Personalised Marketing should be the norm for all businesses So why aren t more companies stepping up 20 Mar 2015 19 06 Personalised marketing campaigns driven by online data collection are fast becoming a key Feb 2015 The businesses who missed the point 18 Feb 2015 15 31 Your business start up

  • Can Growth Vouchers help you with marketing?
existing and potential customers using social media to extend your reach into new markets developing pricing strategies and closing sales So setting a growth target and taking a long term view the marketing advice would seek to identify what actions you could take that you are not doing currently to get you to your target How do you find an adviser Taking on board the worries about finding someone you can trust the Government has devised an accreditation scheme to ensure quality control for advisors who can work for Growth Vouchers They must Have 3 years experience of advising small businesses Be a member of a recognised professional body Have professional indemnity insurance There is also the opportunity for clients to rate advisors on the website so that others can read the reviews and use the information to make their own choices The reviews are limited as yet because the scheme is so young but this should provide good guidance and reassurance for purchasers Eligibility for Growth Vouchers To be considered for a Growth Voucher your business must have 49 employees or less including any employees of companies that own a stake in your business be registered in England have been trading for at least one year not have paid for business advice in the last 3 years be independent i e no more than 25 is owned by other businesses or organisations That must include the majority of the small businesses in England Should you go for it If you meet the criteria above then why not give it a go It only takes a few minutes to complete the application so it you re unlucky in the lottery you ve not lost too much time Sometimes it does take a fresh point of view on our businesses to wake us up to doing something differently But consider also if you are ready willing and able to take action as a result of the advice you receive I ll be following the results of this study with interest because in the many years that I ve been working with small businesses the willingness to take advice is not in question but despite what I said above in my experience the ability to act on advice is a fundamental barrier Tweet track back URL add comment Comments Great to see the interest in the Growth Vouchers programme Have you had queries or anything that you would like further information on Denise Shaw Communications Growth Vouchers BIS Comment by Denise Shaw 4 Mar 2014 12 35 Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 5116 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m

any marketing Yes you do No I don t need to I get all the business I need from xxx OR well I tried it once it didn t work so I gave up What these conversations reveal is deep seated confusion about what marketing is and that since everyone that has a business with customers is doing marketing there is a lot of unconscious effort going into it Which is fine if you are getting the results you want and hitting your goals If not it s time to get more conscious Marketing is everything you do to create satisfied customers profitably that is people who pay for your good services and who are prepared to keep coming back for more Of course there are variations on t read on add comment The power of controversy Filed under Opinion by Sharon Wilding on 4 Sep 2013 Who said there s no such thing as bad publicity It s clearly nonsense of course there are some spectacular failures in marketing case history Stories of companies severely affected by bad publicity BP Hoover Perrier But a bit of controversy on the other hand can get you a lot more column inches and air time than sticking to the straight and narrow Just recently Sky Broadband have been in the news having their Bruce Willis ad banned for being misleading Coca cola was similarly castigated not so long ago Ikea was accused of frightening people with its gnomes ad and Marmite too has been criticised for being insensitive to animal protection organisations I ve picked up on these in the marketing discussion groups but they were all featured on major websites including the BBC Publicity worth having Could it be that some companies actively seek to use the angle of controversy to make their publicity budgets go further There is a ad for Dreamscape Networks featuri read on add comment Is fear holding you back Filed under Opinion by Sharon Wilding on 27 Aug 2013 Did you watch the BBC Three series The Call Centre I ve got them recorded and have only watched a couple but Nev the call centre owner is a fascinating character He has some unorthodox tactics but the fundamental principles he uses to approach the motivation of his team seem to have merit To produce not just good but great results you need to feel positive and energised about the role you re carrying out And working in a call centre where you are continually abused or simply hung up on time after time has got to be one of the hardest jobs ever If you can t handle rejection then you won t last 5 minutes His motto is Some will Some won t So what Next A great philosophy that many of us can benefit from And it got me thinking about other fears or limiting beliefs that stop us achieving our full potential in business Fear of rejection is common among many of us engaged in sales and marketing But what about some of these other fears FAILURE been thinking a lot about websites the last few days It seems appropriate therefore to reprise a blog from last year Frankly your website has to be more than a fancy brochure it has to be working hard for you in your business And if it s not then you have to know enough to be able to back and challenge your web company to put things right for you We d like to make you a smarter customer of web sponsored events regular demands from kids friends colleagues and mere acquaintances to support their efforts for charity And it also brings a number of dilemmas How do you balance your desire to give a bit back and do a bit of good with requests from all angles Do you feel a little bit guilty every time you turn down a request to donate Is it better to give 500 to one charity or 10 to 50 charities I haven t found the answer to all these issues but I was very pleased to come across an idea that we can implement in our business while doing something positive for charity at the same time I can t claim any credit really I have Spacemaker Architects for showing me the way and they admitted they borrowed it from somewhere else too I bet many of you could do likewise Like a lot of companies Spacemaker Architects included we offer a free initial consultation to allow a potential customer to find out if we could work together The consultation may lead to us presenting a formal proposal but in the course of that discussion we give huge amounts of value in the shape of feedback and ideas on a client s business To raise money you simply ask for a donation to charity in return for the time and valuable advice and everyone gets to feel good about the process We ve advertised this on our website but have not had chance to

  • Are newsletters a waste of time?
place for traditional Look at how your online communications works with the traditional media and make sure they complement each other As with any marketing issue you need to know your customer and work out or test which techniques are most effective at engaging them Or perhaps you have different segments of customers who have different needs Are you properly catering for them Worry less about timetable One of the pieces of advice I always gave was to have a timetable and stick to it religiously Now I m much more flexible yes it is important to maintain visibility and a timetable helps with internal discipline and planning but in reality the reader has better things to do than worry about whether you are late or on time with your newsletter Frankly no one notices because there are plenty of other distractions to take your place So the upshot is we ll probably carry on doing plenty of newsletters but reviewing and changing them all the time to keep pace with changes in market behaviour We d never want to be accused of being stuck in a rut What s your view on newsletters Sharon Wilding is a Chartered Marketer with many years experience in marketing for businesses large and small As a lecturer and a practioner she aims to help small businesses use theory in practical ways to improve performance You can connect with Sharon on Google LinkedIn Facebook and Twitter Tweet track back URL add comment Comments Email Newsletter is mostly used by online business organization to communicate and keep engaging their regular customers It is really a good choice to use email newsletter While you create your newsletter you must be sure to have a highly responsive email design and should focus on providing simple and effective design which will help you increase your click through rate Comment by Laura Watson 29 Jul 2014 06 24 Good article Sharon The standout points are the need to keep things fresh and analyse open and click through rates etc always trying to improve things Something we find works well is for businesses to create regular blogs sending them out via social media direct to those who want them as they re released Then to take those blogs and use them as the content for the email newsletter summarising each blog in the newsletter with there being links to the blog on the website While some people are happy to be drip fed blogs as they re created others prefer to get a monthly email newsletter that lets them pick and choose from a range of blogs on offer What typically happens is that people feel obliged to look at at least one or two of the blogs and as long as there s something of interest each month then they ll carry on opening the email newsletters Comment by Andy Harris 28 June 2014 19 12 Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your
