  • Know your (marketing) numbers
of course that one of the things people love about online or electronic communications is the way you get so much data and information about how they are working so use it Make sure you have analytics on your website so you know what visitors do when they get there ensure you can track your newsletters and emails click through rates and remember to record how your customers eventually come to you For every method you use to promote your company there is a means to measure it unfortunately some routes are only available if you have the money to invest in research so you will have to add some intuition to the measures you can make No harm in that the best campaigns work through layering i e using more than one route to enter a customer s consciousness which means it is harder to isolate the impact of any individual element Measures of promotions success will allow you to work out your ROI return on investment and help you see if you are spending wisely when it comes to marketing in order to hit the targets discussed in point 1 above They say knowledge is power and data can give you knowledge ergo so take time out each month to know your numbers and make better decisions Tweet track back URL add comment Comments This is oh so true if you can t measure it you can t manage it is almost a truism or as one management guru put it If you aren t keeping score then you are just practicing A good management report doesn t have to look like an PHD in Accounting theory just some key verifiable numbers that help to run the business tailored to your own style and understanding I d keep this blog handy Comment by allan reid 1 Apr 2010 16 38 Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 0036 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul

  • The Moral Maze of Marketing
our fast paced lives and that we cannot assume that we the public do have the information or the inclination to make fully informed choices The convenience of ready meals and TV dinners has been shown to be responsible for the decline in families eating together which in turn is leading to breakdown in communication skills and family life Not something that was foreseen at the outset I m sure But we should remember that markets are not passive or static Consumers or the market can also play a stronger role in this process by demanding better controls and more honest information on products and packaging Government may also need to play a more authoritative role Ultimately being an optimist by nature I am hopeful that marketing will respond to this problem by recognising the real needs of society and developing and promoting products that will reverse these negative trends There are some small signs of the start of this process through the introduction of healthy options and games that encourage active rather than sedentary lives e g Wii fit which putting cynicism aside is a step in the right direction In the meantime my personal experience with working with many marketers in businesses in the UK is that they have integrity and honesty in abundance So I shall hold my head high and continue to defend marketing as an essential and positive aspect of our market economy Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 1209 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content

  • Marketing Myth #2: Customers don't like being contacted too often
you have a list that you are sending messages to regularly and if you are tracking who opens your emails you may get downhearted and question the point of doing it when there appear to be large numbers of people not reading your efforts but not bothering to unsubscribe either These people are usually referred to as emotionally un subscribed And some e marketing organisations recommend you cull your list as including these people in your statistics make your results look poor However in an article at MarketingProfs I came across another view that these people should be termed un emotionally subscribed meaning they remain interested but just don t need what you are selling right now Ignoring your messages until they are ready to buy is easier than finding you again at a later date They quote some interesting statistics Ten percent of one company s revenue in 2008 came from subscribers who opened not a single email in 2007 An outstanding offer from another company generated 70 000 in sales from subscribers who had not opened the previous 25 to 40 email messages This makes sense to me I get quite a few promotional emails that I don t open or respond to right away As long as you provide an easy opt out mechanism then I think it is safe to assume that your customers are thinking that they might need you someday just not yet The bottom line is that your business needs a planned contact strategy for leads prospects and customers how you do it needs to be right for you and them but being afraid of being annoying is not a good excuse for no contact at all Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 4218 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of

  • Snake Oil and Marketing
too hard The idea that you need to learn how to do something and then gain practical experience and true expertise by applying it over time is laughed at But in truth nothing is that easy Despite the hype we all know there are few overnight successes or ways to get rich without breaking sweat Or we d all be millionaires by now My advice is cultivate a healthy scepticism and look beyond the headlines to look for evidence to back up the claims If it sounds too good to be true it probably is From Wikipedia Snake Oil is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat joint pain However the most common usage of the phrase is as a derogatory term for compounds offered as medicines which implies they are fake or ineffective The expression is also applied metaphorically to any product with exaggerated marketing but questionable or unverifiable quality or benefit Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 8650 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content marketing mea culpa 15 June 2015 21 27 I m just home from a day s training in the latest in digital marketing strategy and I m racked Mar 2015 One to One Personalised Marketing should be the norm for all businesses So why aren t more companies stepping up 20 Mar 2015 19 06 Personalised marketing campaigns driven by online data collection are fast becoming a key Feb 2015 The businesses who missed the point 18 Feb 2015 15 31 Your business start up

  • Can Growth Vouchers help you with marketing?
existing and potential customers using social media to extend your reach into new markets developing pricing strategies and closing sales So setting a growth target and taking a long term view the marketing advice would seek to identify what actions you could take that you are not doing currently to get you to your target How do you find an adviser Taking on board the worries about finding someone you can trust the Government has devised an accreditation scheme to ensure quality control for advisors who can work for Growth Vouchers They must Have 3 years experience of advising small businesses Be a member of a recognised professional body Have professional indemnity insurance There is also the opportunity for clients to rate advisors on the website so that others can read the reviews and use the information to make their own choices The reviews are limited as yet because the scheme is so young but this should provide good guidance and reassurance for purchasers Eligibility for Growth Vouchers To be considered for a Growth Voucher your business must have 49 employees or less including any employees of companies that own a stake in your business be registered in England have been trading for at least one year not have paid for business advice in the last 3 years be independent i e no more than 25 is owned by other businesses or organisations That must include the majority of the small businesses in England Should you go for it If you meet the criteria above then why not give it a go It only takes a few minutes to complete the application so it you re unlucky in the lottery you ve not lost too much time Sometimes it does take a fresh point of view on our businesses to wake us up to doing something differently But consider also if you are ready willing and able to take action as a result of the advice you receive I ll be following the results of this study with interest because in the many years that I ve been working with small businesses the willingness to take advice is not in question but despite what I said above in my experience the ability to act on advice is a fundamental barrier Tweet track back URL add comment Comments Great to see the interest in the Growth Vouchers programme Have you had queries or anything that you would like further information on Denise Shaw Communications Growth Vouchers BIS Comment by Denise Shaw 4 Mar 2014 12 35 Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 3965 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m

  • Create a NOT to do list
importantly it helps you decide what you re NOT going to do So this Friday when you review your to do list for the coming week as I m sure you always do why not be bold and move some of the ideas that have been hanging around for a long time off the list altogether Say NO Unless of course the thing that you ve struggled to get around to doing is your marketing strategy and plan because then you ll be in real trouble Sharon Wilding is a Chartered Marketer with many years experience in marketing for businesses large and small As a lecturer and a practioner she aims to help small businesses use theory in practical ways to improve performance You can connect with Sharon on Google LinkedIn Facebook and Twitter Tweet track back URL add comment Comments Very wise words Sharon and good advice for life not just business I read recently that people are either Satisfiers or Maximisers The Satisfiers say yes this is good enough without looking at all the opportunities and the Maximisers keep looking and looking examining every possible opportunity before making a decision In reality the middle way is often best don t just settle for one or two things or the first things that present themselves and don t be overwhelmed by seemingly endless choice And I agree a plan will help to differentiate between the two Comment by Caroline 31 May 2013 08 37 Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 8285 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content marketing mea culpa 15 June 2015 21 27 I

  • Just say no - being cruel to be kind!
posting on as many sites as they can so I just treat it as spam and assume they will go away Comment by Sharon 13 Apr 2012 16 34 Completely agree Sharon We must be cut from the same cloth In my corporate HR days I always used to return calls even though I knew some were from sales people who I didn t want to speak to and they were often suprised that I had I just felt it was common courtesy And I also tried to be good at saying no so that they didn t keep calling The sad thing is that some people will ask for a proposal as an alternative to saying no which is the ultimate in disrespect given the amount of time and energy that you will be putting in to them Maybe everyone needs a Sharon like your old Marketing Director Comment by Jo Dodds 12 Apr 2012 20 47 Oh yes this is a blog I just have to tweet as I m sure it ll resonate with many people I ve experienced this myself spending time remotely and in a meeting only to wait ages or get fobbed off when trying to make contact with the company person who I ve put effort into There becomes a feeling of how rude is that person Should there be more respect for suppliers in general Yes to the cold caller respect comes in the form of saying No early on to not send them down a wrong path and let them get on with calling the next person to the potential supplier who has clearly spent lots of time on providing a proposal respect should come in the form of having an internal process that ensures that there is communication back to the person company trying to get the business Unfortunately some people in a buying position think it s ok to have no respect for potential suppliers and you d hope that some day they d be in a similar position themselves so they can feel what it s like Or maybe we should all be smarter in how we provide proposals Maybe we should present them along with a tick list of when we will follow up with them so that there s some sort of expectation to get a response Perhaps even there s scope to have the guts to say to a potential customer We would like to work for you but can you please confirm that you will respond to our input within an appropriate timeframe Really interesting topic Sharon not seen this sort of subject posted before Comment by Andy Harris 12 Apr 2012 20 05 Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 7827 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused
