  • Marketing Myth #1: Advertising and marketing is the same thing
What is the sales strategy and process you have in place to ensure you convert interest and enquiries into sales All these issues are aspects of or are influenced by your marketing in fact there are not many things that you do in your business that are not heavily impacted by the marketing decisions you make Promotion may often feel like the most visible and costly part of the marketing mix but failing to address the above list properly is only likely to make it more visible and costly through poor execution and wastage In an earlier blog I mentioned that many people say to me we don t do any marketing What they mean is that they don t do a lot of promotions and that may be the right decision for their business If you are getting all the new and repeat custom you can handle then you are obviously doing something right and maybe you are instinctively good at marketing But to sustain growth there generally comes a point when a more structured and disciplined approach to managing your marketing mix i e all the stuff above is going to be needed Be honest if you don t have the marketing skills yourself then go out and get some help or training Marketing is too important a business function to do half heartedly Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 2083 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content marketing mea culpa 15 June 2015 21 27 I m just home

  • Marketing inspiration or perspiration?
long just make sure you have one and that you refer to it often 3 Test measure adapt No matter how many years experience you have in marketing there are few dead certs when it comes to delivering success Look around you and you will see it is so What works today may not work tomorrow what works for one company doesn t deliver for another It is impossible to control all of the factors that influence that elusive purchase decision so you must gather information look at what it is telling you and act promptly to stop what isn t working and do more of what is Marketing is not something you can do once every few weeks you need to be on top of it all the time building your reputation generating awareness interest and ultimately sales There is no magic wand in marketing but getting the fundamentals right through hard work and perspiration means that you create the right environment for your inspiration and creativity to flourish Tweet track back URL add comment Comments Great site Well done Comment by Business Coaching Perth 13 Mar 2010 08 11 Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 0415 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content marketing mea culpa 15 June 2015 21 27 I m just home from a day s training in the latest in digital marketing strategy and I m racked Mar 2015 One to One Personalised Marketing should be the norm for all businesses So why aren t more companies stepping up 20 Mar 2015 19 06 Personalised marketing campaigns driven by online data collection

  • The Marketing Placebo
its logo And how many times have you wondered what was the point who can tell the difference anyway Well now you know how deeply the branding can be affecting the customer s opinions behaviours and beliefs I don t know what the profit margin is on a branded painkiller that has the exact same make up as the cheaper unbranded version but looking at how much higher the retail price is I would suggest that the cost of the branding must surely be worth it Bearing all this in mind I suggest you stand back and take a long hard look at how well your brand is working for you Ask others for their opinion Does your brand suggest as for the painkillers a professional expert product that will deliver a more effective service than your competitors and that is worth paying a premium for Or is your business or product looking tired and shabby in need of a tidy up Whatever you decide to do don t just dismiss it as marketing mumbo jumbo when it could be making a real difference to your bottom line Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 4162 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content marketing mea culpa 15 June 2015 21 27 I m just home from a day s training in the latest in digital marketing strategy and I m racked Mar 2015 One to One Personalised Marketing should be the norm for all businesses So why aren t more companies stepping up

  • Ugly Marketing Sells
it seems crazy but long often ugly copy works Long copy isn t new to the web Decades ago successful direct mail copywriters like Gary Bencivenga and Gene Schwartz noticed that the more you told the more you sold In other words the more relevant compelling information they could cram into a piece of physical mail the more likely it was that the customer would buy Bencivenga in particular liked to push things to almost absurd extremes with direct mail pieces called magalogs which were sometimes nearly as long as the books they were designed to sell The blog which you can read in full at the Copyblogger site actually goes on to say that the internet is moving on from the long and ugly to providing the depth and breadth of information in more sophisticated ways while a more recent blog seemingly contradictorily talks about short attention spans and the need to make your point quickly But for me the important lesson here is not to make an assumption that my personal views and preferences are any kind of guide to those of others In the end it comes back to the basic rule know the customers you are targeting and test as much as you can assume nothing without evidence I d love to know what works for you leave a short comment on the blog Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 9977 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content marketing mea culpa 15 June 2015 21 27 I m

  • Improving responses from digital marketing
a salutary lesson from Bupa who once upon a time decided they were a membership organisation not an insurance company and so removed the word completely from their website Customers of course thought differently and Bupa ceased to feature in their search results If only they d tested it first Tweet track back URL add comment Comments Totally agree with this Unfortunately the majority of companies don t get it that they should be dedicating even just a little bit of time to analyse what is and isn t working Those of us involved in marketing consultancy can look at most companies and instantly identify weak points and make recommendations but it s important for those recommendations to be acted upon Take for example website statistics analysis Although so many people rave about Google Analytics there are many other solutions that are stronger and for little cost By dedicating a few minutes each day most companies can quickly identify elements of their websites or marketing of those websites that aren t getting the best results Unfortunately many businesses are too small and find it hard to dedicate the time and instead embark on various forms of marketing and all the time business is coming in OK there s not an issue However if a downturn happens they go into panic mode The reality for businesses of all types is that time HAS to be set aside to analyse return on marketing investment It s no longer a nice to do activity but is an essential for any company wanting to get through the challenging conditions in 2009 and beyond Comment by aharris 13 Mar 2009 17 21 Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 9499 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was

  • Resolutions for Marketing
without costing you money And don t forget it is estimated that it costs between 4 and 10 times as much to acquire a new customer as to keep an old one So make sure you think of ways to make your existing customers feel particularly special 3 Articulate the value you are delivering Again this takes time rather than money but a couple of hours spent pinning down the true value you provide to customers will improve the way you communicate and enhance your understanding of your customers issues No doubt you ve come across the concept of the elevator pitch a short statement of what benefit you provide targeted directly to the customer you are addressing It s a simple idea but devilishly hard to perfect Who can resist the temptation to throw in the kitchen sink In an opening statement less is definitely more If you pique their interest you ll get the chance to elaborate but if you turn them off all hope is lost It is the companies who deliver the greatest value to their customers that will survive and thrive in the coming year however tough it gets The strongest brands maintain their investment and plan for the long term Whatever else you resolve resolve to be one of them Tweet track back URL add comment Comments No comments so far why not be the first Your name Email address never displayed Web site Organisation add me to your email list HTML markup not supported Access code 7778 Please enter the 4 digit code above into the following box We re sorry about this but we need to do this to prevent our site being abused by people looking for free advertising required fields Past Blogs search Oct 2015 Top 10 Product Naming Tips 23 Oct 2015 19 50 I m working with a client who is launching a new product next year They know what it is what it Aug 2015 Is Marketing essential for success 7 Aug 2015 11 11 Strange that having spent so long trying to show clients how much more there is to marketing than Jul 2015 Christmas is coming 27 Jul 2015 20 40 It s July The weather might lead you to conclude differently but it s the middle of the British Do you have a personal brand 10 Jul 2015 16 25 Jim s post of a couple of weeks back about getting on and doing stuff brought to mind a discussion Exhibition Time 3 Jul 2015 21 33 Next Tuesday 7th July the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce are holding the annual Kent B2B June 2015 You know what you need to do 25 June 2015 22 58 I was with a coaching client this week and in the middle of the session she said something that I The 1 sin in content marketing mea culpa 15 June 2015 21 27 I m just home from a day s training in the latest in digital

will have to deliver on through the other Ps You may need to be flexible in your pricing to win key business or want to create compelling offers for customers that will speed up their decision to buy Place Shops online personal selling are all channels that can be used to distribute products or services and it is likely that your business will be using several different strategies for taking it s services to market You may be selling direct or via intermediaries or both But once again your decisions start with understanding how your target customer needs to get hold of your product and how you can make the experience of buying your product as simple and straightforward as possible Promotion Typically this is what people think of when they think of marketing What materials and media are you going to use to get your message in front of your customers It covers a wide range of activities including branding advertising PR websites brochures and events It can also be the area where you spend most money so needs to be carefully directed to support the other areas of the marketing mix and most importantly the effectiveness needs to be measured so that you can decide what you do more of less of in the future Your Marketing Plan can be as long or short as you like but your aim is to come up with a Mix of Ps that will achieve your business goals a topic I will expand on another time The 4 Ps are internal factors that you can control but they have to be adapted to what is happening in the external marketplace Using this framework will ensure you think of marketing as more than just advertising and selling by forcing you to consider what value you are really offering to the customers you are targeting But once you have your plan you then have to make sure you use it Don t make it an academic exercise and file it away Create a set of actions you will implement and carry them out And review it on a regular basis remember the external marketplace is not standing still and you need to be flexible enough and in touch enough to respond to changes to stay ahead of the game add comment Do you do Marketing Filed under Marketing by Sharon Wilding on 19 Aug 2008 We don t do marketing We tried advertising and it didn t work This is something I hear regularly from small businesses But it is not so If you are offering a product or service that a particular group of customers are prepared to pay money for then you are doing marketing Without labouring technical definitions of marketing of which there are several it is fair to say that a general use definition often focuses just on advertising and selling And this is not just in small businesses even in large corporates marketing can be interpreted by many
