stayed with me Sotaru lives in a Government built estate in Japan After a life changing event in his early years he develops an unassailable fear of leaving the housing estate As he goes through school puberty and work his friend s leave relationships come and go and yet he still cannot bring himself to leave The real strength of the film is HAMADA Gaku who plays Sotaru You will be hearing more about him soon in my review of SAKE BOMB He also memorably worked with this Director NAKAMURA Yoshihiro in THE FOREIGN DUCK THE NATIVE DUCK AND GOD He manages to find the balance of being sweet and endearing but not annoying I found myself supporting the character s growth and understanding his dilemma It is important that he does not just sit back in his boundaries he studies and exercises to become strong He also walks around every night with a clipboard making sure that everyone is safe His fear of the outside world changes his relationship with everything in life not just how far he can walk from home The supporting characters are believable in the way they interact with Sotaru They want to be understanding

  • Review: Europa | tomjupiter
pulls us in as commanded but sets the tone of tired late travel with the monotony of train tracks and a cold threatening feel This narrative voice will recur throughout the film speaking to us It directs us through the film yet also pulls us out and back to our film watching reality The effect is that the characters and themes are brought out with us lending the stylised and heavily atmospheric film a real context in our history that would be a step further away were we all getting lost in the story What of the story then Our protagonist is Leopold Kessler Jean Marc Barr a young American of German descent who has travelled to Germany shortly after the end of WWII in order to take a job and in his way help with the country s restoration The job he gets thanks to his uncle is that of a night car conductor on the train line being brought back to commercial use after the war He finds himself traveling through a torn up country being used by everyone the Americans and the terrorists known as Werewolves and the family that own the railway Indeed it is his lack of desire to take sides that sets him most apart from the other characters and perhaps makes him a great avatar for the audience in this film There are some fascinating techniques used in EUROPA with multiple shots filmed separately but built together in some scenes much like Ray Harryhausen s rear projection work begun on THE BEAST FROM 20 000 FATHOMS Black and white with occasional colour scenes or highlights in certain shots Indeed the use of different techniques and effects is admirable and very impressive For some perhaps it is distracting and may seem like von Trier
