  • Review: EPIDEMIC | tomjupiter
plays the protagonist doctor himself The air is infected and the soil Going back to EPIDEMIC again with the space to think that a second viewing allows there are in fact a great many similarities with a strong continuation of themes from THE ELEMENT OF CRIMES Disease and the corruption of mind and body it creates along with an assault on civilisation particularly European civilsation Knowledge and learning return again It is the loss of information that begins the quest for a new narrative and then the research that von Trier conducts leads to our protagonist on his journey linking the two characters even more I understand that you ve settled on bubonic plague Identity again is important Lars plays both a version of himself the film maker and then the doctor too Both of whom of course are constructs although the filming style lends one more realism than the other The use of hypnosis at the end of the film also mirrors the therapy that Fisher is undergoing in Egypt in THE ELEMENT OF CRIME So are the constructed characters in the film any less real than our memories with all the tricks our minds can play on us Visually the film is initially far less obviously impressive than the predecessor but again on second viewing I find the grainy black and white to be more gripping than I expected Is it any less constructed than the heavily filtered world of THE ELEMENT OF CRIME The juxtaposition overlaying of images typewriter over shots of Lars creating the story all push the act of creation into the fore and the fake realism of these scenes brings to mind questions of fiction and reality and how hypnosis may fit with this The doctor sequences are filmed in a completely different style

  • Review: ELYSIUM | tomjupiter
message is simpler and easier to see as it is represented by the Elysium space station itself where the wealthiest live while the rest of us remain on an overpopulated diseased Earth Vast city slums spread for miles Visually this is all realised very impressively both with the large effects shots and then with the props and locations too Again we have world building here of the highest order 2 Without giving too much away the plot boils down to Matt Damon s character Max both wanting and needing to reach Elysium Matt Damon is very good as Max a role that requires lots of physical work alongside playing a character with heart and determination Unsurprisingly it is Sharlto Copley who really steals the show as gun for hire Kruger a truly horrible piece of work and an excellent foil for Max I have heard some people leaving the screens complaining that Jodie Foster lets the team down In truth her character does not gel with the rest of the film but I don t feel that this is her fault There is little backstory or real motivation behind Delacourt s actions Although none of the characters are particularly deep this lack is a weakness in the film The action scenes are well put together All that world building I keep going on about grounds the sci fi in enough reality that things don t get too silly We are given a second or two to marvel at the gadgets but it is clear that they are hurting and killing people which is the main impact of these scenes This I think heightens the tension in the film and is one of the elements that I hoped Blomkamp would carry over from his previous work It is also nice that
