pen components This provides a lustrous hardwearing finish that completely dries in no more than 10 minutes Once dried the finish will resist water sweat impact abrasion and UV light and can be made glossier simply by the application of additional coats It ll also preserve the colour of the underlying timber being truly crystal clear We offer D M Pen Finish in 100ml and 250ml variants with a similar level of choice applying to our other offerings from this brand D M Wood Hardener for instance comes in 500ml 1000ml 2500ml and 5 litre sizes Wood Hardener is the D M product to choose if you want to work with some past its best timber without the disappointing results that can so often arise from this kind of endeavour It soaks into the timber drying and leaving a firmer surface that cuts so much more easily than your typical rotten old timber You can apply this hardener with a paintbrush and once it has dried in 10 to 20 minutes you can just cut and sand the wood as normal Also available is a Carnauba Wax that provides the high bright lustre that has made this type of finish so popular among woodturners It can be applied directly to the timber surface using a soft cloth before being polished off with a clean cloth Finally we also proudly stock D M Natural Oil Finish for use on woodturnings natural wood furniture floors and worktops As its name suggests it contains only natural ingredients being free of harmful volatile solvents while also meeting the DIN EN71 Pt 3 standard for toy safety Such characteristics of D M s wood finishes make it no surprise that we so readily recommend it to woodturning professionals and amateurs alike here at The ToolPost

who have lost their sight Bill has said that although he can see colours and movement his vision is blurred adding The best way to describe it is when you come out after a shower and your mirror is steamed up that is what I see When your vision is affected you can get a great sense of isolation You don t feel as though you are a part of what is going on The loss of his sight caused Bill to presume that he would never be able to resume his woodturning hobby He was happily proved wrong however when Blind Veterans UK helped him to adapt his methods so that he could continue producing his work He even made a special centenary bowl from Burr Elm presenting it to the charity As Bill explained They helped me to retrain and use different techniques so I could continue with my hobby I now make things like pens and hedgehogs and sell them in aid of the charity I don t know how to describe the change in my life apart from that my whole outlook has gone from half empty to half full We re lucky enough to have met the man himself through his tutor Andrew Hall a long time friend of The ToolPost Andrew knew Bill before he lost his sight and while he was already a keen and skilled turner he understandably lost confidence in his craft following the loss of his sight With the help of Andrew we were very happy to help Bill regain his confidence in woodturning through the provision of tools and advice in how to adapt his existing skills in order to take into account his blindness Here at The ToolPost to say that we are impressed by both the charity

  • Documentary
for thousands of pounds On watching this curious documentary few observers will be able to doubt the enduringly strange beauty of this enduringly strange art Nor should it be a surprise that Kennard is so good at it given that he has been turning and crafting since the mid 70s The woodturner s official website has described his path in common with that of others who follow this ever fascinating if often overlooked art as one of continuous discovery Certainly that is the experience of the person who watches Turns in which Kennard shown taking a solid block of wood and sawing and sharpening it in conjunction with the lathe and a series of tools It takes astonishingly steady handiwork for him to bring the tiny carvings and intricate textures on each box s side to completion Kennard has commented The discipline of knowing that it s got to be a container of some kind that s really where my passion has taken me The satisfaction of making something with your own hands can t be described The documentary is just the latest chapter of an impressive story that has already seen him claim a number of accolades with his work appearing in such publications as New Masters of Woodturning and New Masters of the Wooden Box as well as in the permanent collection of the Art Bank of Nova Scotia The woodturning maestro has described his fascination with box forms as having something to do with the mystery inherent in them and for those who have not seen Kennard s work in the flesh or even those who have there can be few better ways of appreciating that mystery than by giving Turns a well deserved watch Editor s Note The ToolPost http www toolpost co uk index html

Young Turners Project has presumably been a big help in attracting the grant funding that it has recently been given for the purchase of new equipment Befittingly the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain AWGB has acknowledged the scheme gifting 500 in addition to giving the pupils free membership of the Association This adds to such other recent successes for the project as the award of a 250 Forfar Roof Truss Company sponsorship cheque run in conjunction with the Forfar Dispatch and Kirriemuir Herald which has enabled the school to purchase another lathe alongside the five that it already possessed A further pre Christmas boost came in the form of a 783 grant from Angus Council Peter revealed that the project had been given branch status by the AWGB which gave all 20 of the boys and girls a free membership of the organisation until they are 18 He added that the cash injections would fund the replacement of worn equipment and the equipping of the school s lathes with a set of tools each He added The students are doing their bit by selling the items they make at the Angus Farmers Market in Forfar on a stall very kindly given free of charge It is amazing the assistance the club has had from all concerned including the technical department at the school to get it up and running It is very much appreciated by myself the students and parents as woodturning is a very satisfying hobby and once the practitioner is proficient may be able to generate an income Even as fairly seasoned woodturners who feel like we have seen it all here at The ToolPost we can t deny how impressed we are by the Young Turners Project and wish Peter and the pupils the best of

  • Germanoil
our product range Drechsleroel for instance whilst functioning as a good old fashioned Woodturner s Oil is made wholly from natural ingredients and is perfect for achieving a super satin sheen finish Not only will you need only three coats to achieve this but it is also a very durable finish and the colourless nature of the product means that the underlying timber will retain its intended shade As a matter of fact it will simply enhance those colours already present in your turned wooden masterpiece Drechsleroel embodies all of the characteristics which make it perfect as a woodturning finish All that you need in order to apply it is a safety cloth although we do recommend a piece of Nyweb for the second and subsequent coats and it dries quickly to a durable finish It smells pleasant too which is quite a surprise given how traditional finishing oils tend to be There s also no need to worry about its safety if you are using it to finish wooden toys given that it meets the German DIN EN71 standard for Toy Safe Finishes If you are more of a wood carver though you might be equally pleased to hear that there s a Steinert finishing product for your needs too Drachenoel or Dragon Oil though you can rest assured that it is effective on many items beyond dragons such as garden furniture in fact it is appropriate for use on any woodwork that finds use outside It s perfect for finishing wooden creations that are exposed to the elements to which it will impart an attractive protective surface whilst aiding the progressive weathering of the material to a much sought after weathered silvered mature appearance Needless to say we have rapidly become big fans of both Drechsleroel and Drachenoel
