each set featuring serrated gripping surfaces typically know as gripper jaws designed to give an excellent grip in both compression and expansion mounting modes using parallel sided recesses or spigots Such recesses and spigots are much easier to create than an accurately matched dovetail recess or spigot The chuck is operated by the use of two tommy bars which are inserted into holes in the chuck body and the operating ring respectively Unlike most other tommy bar operated chucks on the market the Model T boasts four tommy bar holes in each ring so that the levers are never more than ninety degrees apart in turn this means that any but the most petite handed operator can grip both tommy bars in one hand to either nip up or release the chuck s hold on the workpiece This simple bit of design originality means that you still have one hand free to hold the workpiece whilst operating the chuck with the other hand Our apologies to all of those triple handed users that this may now render obsolete along with their ill thought out chucks Package contents 80 mm outside diameter scroll chuck A set of workholding jaws is mounted on the chuck as delivered with an internal compression grip of 38 mm 1 5 and an external expansion grip of 50 mm 2 A second set of workholding jaws with a 15 mm internal grip and a 25 mm 1 external expansion grip plus a further 1 5 38 mm external expansion grip step useful when turning hollow objects such as boxes Mounting bush to suit lathe spindle ¾ x 16 tpi or 1 x 8 tpi threads only Two tommy bars which are used to operate the chuck Allen key for workholding jaw removal and replacement User Manual

The centre points are spring loaded with adjustable spring tension and the penetration of the point into the timber can thus be adjusted Unlike most such products the Chuck Spurs are designed to project well beyond the chuck body and jaws minimising the risk of the fingers being caught by the rotating chuck parts when turning spindles with detail close to the chuck Indeed the Oneway is the only chuck mounted drive that I would personally use as my own view is that I d prefer to spend thirty seconds removing the chuck than be required to work details on a spindle with my fingers millimetres away from a sharp edged set of jaws rotating at high speed No I ve never had an accident but I m determined to keep it that way so I m very selective about the equipment with which I work The Oneway Woodworm Screws are first fix workholding devices designed to enable you to hold a piece of timber safely whilst preparing the base and outside of the bowl preparatory to the hollowing phase Being by Oneway these screws are works of art or engineering marvels with deep cut threads tapered towards the point and available in a choice of two lengths and either right handed for conventional inboard turning or left handed for use outboard with the workpiece in the reverse direction of rotation rotation of workpiece clockwise when viewed on the face In addition to the range of jaws shown above the Oneway Stronghold chuck ONLY can be fitted with collet chuck jaws using a special adaptor jaw set known as the Master Collet Jaws The collet jaws themselves know as pads in Oneway parlance are produced in a range of sizes from 1 2 internal 1 external up to 1 1

  • Patriot
1 2 x 6 tpi for which the chuck is normally direct threaded If you do have an adaptor type Patriot that you wish to use on one of these larger threads a special style of adaptor known as an exsert is available which carries the chuck forward of the lathe spindle the spindle thread being formed in a boss at the rear of the chuck The standard jaws supplied with the Patriot chuck are the nominal 50 mm jaws referred to by the nominal size of spigot onto which they will compress when set at their perfect circle diameter These standard jaws will expand into a dovetail recess sized from 50 mm 2 to 75 mm 3 In compression mode these jaws will close onto a spigot or bowl foot with a diameter from 42 mm 1 33 to 67 mm 2 33 Of course all chuck jaws of the dovetail type should be used at their perfect circle diameter to ensure the best possible workholding but a little accommodation to allow for slightly over zealous cutting of the mounting dovetail is always welcome An innovation introduced by Sorby in their chuck jaws is the incorporation of a gripper section inside the jaws set behind the dovetail section designed to impart superior hold on deep spigots for instance when turning goblets vases and similar forms which may project a long way out of the chuck jaws The full range of Patriot chuck jaws is listed separately for clarity The Patriot chuck is also delivered with a woodscrew chuck which mounts in the centre of the standard jaws and provides an excellent method of initial holding of the workpiece simply by drilling a pilot hole of approx 10 mm in it A protective rubber band is fitted around the Patriot

  • Patriot Jaws
are Pin Jaws These jaws are commonly used to provide a first fixing of the workpiece especially if the workpiece has an uneven surface such as a natural bark edge Simply drill a 25 mm 1 inch hole in the workpiece and the jaws expand into the hole holding the work firmly They also feature a fine dovetail recess of 0 53 in 14 mm internally with a maximum opening of 1 53 in 39 mm and an external dovetail of 1 in 25 mm nominal size expanding to 2 in 50 mm For finishing the base of work after turning the Bowl Reversing jaws make life very simple The workpiece is held onto these aluminium jaws by eight non marking rubber buttons which work equally effectively in expansion or compression mode It is often useful to be able to de mount and later re mount workpieces When using a dovetail formed on the workpiece this often proved to be a frustrating exercise as re aligning the workpiece can be very troublesome The use of Faceplate Rings overcome s this limitation and makes accurate re mounting of work very easy These rings are available to fit the 50 mm dovetail jaws with a choice of two outside diameters allowing a ring appropriate to the size of the workpiece to be selected Faceplate rings are a real boon in situations where work must be frequently de mounted and re mounted such as in education where a ring attached to the workpiece means that each student can rest assured that the work will re mount straight and true the next time it is their turn on the lathe Please not that the mounting jaws also known as carrier jaws base jaws jaw sliders of the Patriot chuck cannot easily be removed and

tommy bars The interesting feature is that the three stepped jaws are reversible to make the chuck functionally equivalent to a set of internal and external engineering jaws This means that the chuck will grip in both compression and expansion modes giving a wide range of workholding possibilities Being three jawed the chuck centres any circular work perfectly The minimum hold diameter is next to nothing should we say 0 5 mm for the record Ah ha I hear you cry but I m a woodturner so I must use a four jaw chuck perish the lack of thinking OK so along came the MM54 our next phase in development which provides in a similarly compact 50 mm diameter package a four jaw self centring micro sized scroll chuck This version is supplied with two sets of jaws shaped respectively for internal and external workholding BUT these jaws are also reversible so you options are legion Please note that the jawsets are not interchangeable between the MM50 and MM54 indeed why should they be But someone is bound to ask Operation is by Tommy bars but note that the design of these for MM50 and MM54 may not be as shown in the above illustration Mounting these chucks couldn t be easier with a choice of methods available The rear face of the chucks are tapped M12 x 1 and will mount directly onto many small engineering lathes For we in the woodturning community we have had adaptors created with a choice of 1 x 8 tpi or 3 4 x 16 tpi rear tapping to suit the common woodturning lathe spindles The chucks are so small that it is not practical to create larger thread sizes than these However where there s a will there s a way and

  • APTC Chuck Jaws
a parallel bore of 1 diameter Types D F have external dovetails with plain parallel bores whilst types G H and BF are Gripper jaws giving an enormously powerful grip Type H has the serrated teeth both internally and externally plus a serrated bore Type BF has similar characteristics but is designed for use on smaller pieces The type M Mega dovetail jaws are as their name suggests designed for the largest of jobs and are at the time of writing the largest capacity jaws for the APTC chuck range Not really suitable for use with the lighter duty Woodturner s chuck in my opinion Jaw dimensional drawings Cylinder Jaws Similar in configuration to but different in application from the O Donnell jaws are the cylinder jaws These are designed primarily to hold long spigots by providing a 50mm deep central recess 25mm ACJ1 or 50 mm ACJ2 diameter In addition the outer end of the jaws carries both an internal and external dovetail Dimensions Stepped Engineering Jaws The versatility of the Evolution Super Precision and Clubman chucks can be enhanced by the use of these stepped jaws These standard engineering style jaws are supplied with both internal grip and external grip versions a total of eight jaws In use these jaws completely replace the accessory mounting jaws normally used to carry the dovetail jaws etc The current jaw design is the safety round edged style not as shown Accessory Mounting Jaws These are the jaws with which all of the Axminster chucks come equipped as standard and upon which the accessory jaws all the others shown on this page are mounted So you may ask why sell them separately It is always possible that you bought your chuck as the engineering model option A rather than the option B

allows for basic off centre work to be acheived such as cabriolet candlesticks as well as multi sided boxes and even small multi sided bowls when used in conjunction with an original Steb Centre or the new Steb Drive Available with a choice of head diameters in 1 or 2 Morse Taper Planet Manufacturing Rotur Drive Centres If you are not sure of the size of the Morse Taper in your lathe take a look at this simple method of measuring Planet Manufacturing Drive Centres A comprehensive range of centres from this well respected British manufacturer competitively priced with no sacrifice in quality My personal choice Piloted Drive Centres A very vers atile centre indeed Not only do thes e centres have we believe a better shape on each of the prongs than some other manufacturers products but the centre is also extendable and removable simply at the turn of an Allen key This means that in timber which may be prone to splitting the tip can be adjusted accordingly and equally very soft timbers can easily be accommodated and securely held by optimising the length of the protruding tip The drive I use Axminster Drive Centres Drive Centres The most basic of the woodturner s needs drive centres come in both two and four prong varieties Those offered here are sturdy robust items designed to give good penetration in the workpiece for consistent driving and able to hold a good edge during extended use The drives are offered in a range of diameters so that working close to the drive end need not be a problem even when working on small diameter pieces Jumbo Drive No these are not for when you re turning elephants but they d run a close second These centres are particularly designed for those
