  • Topsail Adventures Ltd - Pilot Cutter Amelie Rose Races Round the Island
Peter Willis one of the Classic Boat team who will be writing up the whole experience for the August issue Keep an eye out for this issue as there s also an article about our journey from City dwellers to charter skippers The team sailed from Poole on Friday 19th using the trip to Cowes to fine tune our tacking and gybing technique and generally get used to pushing Amelie Rose along After threading her into a tight berth in East Cowes Marina we sat down to a filling meal of home made chicken pie and mash before turning in early to be ready for our 0530 wake up call the next day Saturday dawned grey and drizzly but we didn t let that put us off and were soon out in the Solent sizing up the start line Unfortunately what little wind there was at the start was stolen from Amelie Rose s sails by a large number of boats arriving early for their starts so we were a little late getting away but as the day got going some wind finally arrived and we were soon tacking our way down the Western Solent to the Needles Thanks to some excellent pilotage from crew member Mel Newman Amelie Rose rounded the Needles perfectly skimming past the wreck of the Varvassi that can catch out the unwary before easing the sails to head down the back of the Island At this point Amelie Rose decided to pick up some lunch and got herself entangled in a badly marked lobster pot Luckily we had Chris Spatch Kay aboard who deployed his considerable reach and our 3m boat hook to free us After this minor interruption Amelie Rose seemed impatient to get on and in a stiffening breeze we blasted along to St Catherine s Point and then onto Bembridge at speeds of up to 8 5 knots This really brought home to us the amazing nature of these boats All around us yachts struggled to keep from broaching crews grimly hanging on as their boats corkscrewed along whereas on Amelie Rose the only difficulty was deciding what type of tea to have with our sticky date cake and where to sit to get the best of the sun In these tricky conditions she remains calm and steady on deck easy to handle but still happily keeping up with and indeed pulling away from some of the lighter plastic boats around her From Bembridge to Ryde was typically difficult with large numbers of boats short tacking along the shoreline to stay out of the foul tide Taking nearly a minute to tack means that Amelie Rose isn t the ideal vessel for this part of the race but we were soon free and heading up the Eastern Solent to the finish line Then all that remained to do was cheer as she crossed the line thread her back into East Cowes and adjourn to the Pub where a tired but happy crew

  • Topsail Adventures Ltd - Amelie Rose wins silverware at YOGaff!
got the course written down it was time for the off Picking our way through the fleet kept us on our toes as we blasted our way down the Solent on a run gybing mightily at each mark with the crew responding marvellously to the challenge of pushing Amelie Rose to the maximum By the second lap we had built up the confidence to run right down through the boats moored on Yarmouth Roads and were disappointed when the course was shortened and we were given the finishing gun Amelie Rose was fantastic fast fun and extremely exciting She really relishes a decent breeze and responds by cracking along at a fair old lick we saw 8 6kts flash up on the log at one point She achieves this without ever feeling too difficult to control although she can be a little heavy on her helm once she gets her gunnels in the water Having got back into Yarmouth and got ourselves tied up we headed off to the prize giving not really expecting anything but a nice drink and an enjoyable evening watching folks collecting their trophies We were therefore completely gob smacked when the Class 1 big boats results were announced and Amelie Rose had come second We were both grinning from ear to ear as we went up to accept the trophy on behalf of Amelie Rose and our hard working and triumphant crew and look forward to returning next year to compete again Next time there ll be news about Amelie Rose s return to the West Country to compete in the Pilot Cutter Review in St Mawes Remember that our 6 for 5 special offers are only valid for a couple more weeks AND DEFINITELY DON T FORGET Our Competition for a place on Amelie

  • Topsail Adventures Ltd - Pilot Cutter Amelie Rose finally goes sailing
notice the speed log that you realise that actually you are barrelling along at over 7 knots Sailing across Falmouth bay she seemed to relish the conditions and before long we were mooring up at Port Pendennis Marina in Falmouth our home for the next 2 weeks Seatrials and Photoshoots Over the next fortnight we worked hard with the team who had installed Amelie Rose s systems to get everything commissioned and working properly taking the occasional afternoon off to go sailing And so it was that one Thursday we took her out to take some photographs As you ll see Amelie Rose is a breathtaking sight under sail and having sat in the chase boat as she roars past we can attest that these cutters are every bit as powerful as their reputation suggests Over the fortnight we soon found ourselves growing in confidence as we learned how to hand reef steer and just as importantly nowadays park such a big heavy vessel And although Amelie Rose certainly does have her foibles like any heavy long keeler she has just as many advantages Nothing happens quickly she takes over a minute to tack giving you ages to sort out the sheets she has a steady motion even when it s blowing old boots and she plods ahead happily at tick over forward whilst you hoist sail Under power she telegraphs her intentions clearly when manoeuvring not that you can always do anything about changing them and down below is comfortable even when she is belting along with spray flying over her decks Back to Poole the adventures begin After two weeks of hard graft by the team we were ready to set off for Poole just waiting for a weather window to allow us to get away This finally turned up in the guise of two days of Variable Force 3 forecasts that actually ended up as Easterly Force naff all with buckets of poor visibility and drizzle Still we know now that the Radar works as it kept us clear of shipping along the way and reassured us that the coast really was still there behind the wall of white Dartmouth was our first port of call after leaving Falmouth and we look forward to visiting this pretty port again in more pleasant conditions We saw very little of it in the few hours that we spent there but it did provide a comfortable place to moor up whilst we slept and a great jumping off point for our crossing of Lyme Bay our passage past the Portland Race and finally our entry to Amelie Rose s home port of Poole Harbour Amelie Rose begins her adventures On the late May Bank Holiday we were delighted to welcome aboard Vanessa and her family for a 40th birthday celebration cruise to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight Fitful breezes as we crossed the bay finally saw us delivered to this picturesque harbour where the crew spent a lovely evening

  • Topsail Adventures Ltd - Pilot Cutter Amelie Rose Takes to the Water
Rose at her home port of Poole on 19 June for a day s race training before staying over night in Cowes and then taking part in the famous race on Saturday Après race will include a celebratory glass of bubbly and an evening sampling the Cowes party atmosphere Amelie Rose will return to Poole on the Sunday 21 June arriving sometime in the afternoon The prize is worth over 350 and includes breakfast and lunch on all three days an evening meal on the first night mooring costs and race entry Enter online HERE and answer the following question What is Amelie Rose s home port A Dartmouth B Southampton C Poole or D Cowes Be quick though as this competition closes at the end of the week Amelie Rose Launched A rather grey dawn heralded the start of a milestone day for us here at Topsail Adventures Having left our previous jobs in the City of London just the day before we drove down to Gweek on the morning of the 24th April to find Amelie Rose had already been transported down to the quayside from the boatshed It was an amazing feeling to see her complete for the very first time pictures don t quite do justice to the scale of these cutters when you see them out of the water and neither of us had seen her fully rigged until we clapped eyes on her that day It was also the first time that we saw the other addition to our fleet Mary Rose as Amelie Rose s tender had also been delivered since the last time that we had been to Gweek With the two ladies ready to be launched we had a little time for a scramble around Amelie to see her finished interior for the first time before we heard the crane revving up outside as final preparations were made for launching Hearts in mouths but grins firmly on faces we descended to ground level to mingle with the crowd of spectators and guests that had gathered to watch the launch Nothing can quite prepare you for the sight of your ship being lifted and twirled around through a preposterously small gap until she hangs suspended over the edge of the quayside watch the video in our gallery Terrible thoughts of disaster play at the edges of your mind even as the evident skill of the yard team prove your fears to be without foundation This moment was the focal point of over three years for us and for half an hour that focal point hung like the sword of Damocles supported by chain and strop over a sheer quay And then before she touched the water we climbed aboard to sacrifice a glass of red wine across her stem and to beseech the gods to grant her swift passages and safe landfalls In our previous Cornish adventures we had been lucky enough to meet a kind and generous man by the name

with a couple of people on board making her the perfect vessel for adventures into shallower water where Amelie is too big to sail The tender will be called Mary Rose Mary after Nick s mum who sadly passed away last year and Rose after her bigger sister Mary Rose has been designed and built by Chris Rees who also designed and built Spirit of Mystery the Mounts Bay Lugger that Pete Goss has just sailed from Cornwall to Melbourne see Pete s site for more details Hopefully Mary Rose will emulate the performance of Spirit of Mystery who survived a knockdown in the Southern Ocean rather than that of her namesake from the days of Henry VIII January and February Progress Pictures Lots of big milestones in the first couple of months of 2009 including bolting on the external ballast keel finding and preparing the spars the appearance of a tiller and lots of progress below decks We ve loaded up 4 new sections of photographs covering this period and will upload some more in the next couple of weeks which bring us right up to date Countdown to Launch As we write this the calendar tells us that there are a mere 26 days left before Amelie Rose is launched on the 24th April at Gweek Quay It seems hard to believe that we re now this close to the end of a process that started for us nearly 3 years ago when we first met Luke Powell and sailed on his boat Agnes Of course as one phase of our plan comes to an end another one begins and you get the chance to join in the great adventure by coming sailing with us So come on check out the itinerary and get booking We look forward

we didn t even know what tacking was We flew over the water to the Isle of White where we anchored up in the middle of a nature reserve near Cowes Then our very own water taxi rowed us with Nick at the oars to a fantastic pub where we had dinner on shore We both enjoyed our very first outing on the boat and heartily recommend it especially the giant cooked breakfast courtesy of Melisa to get you started in the morning Christian and Lisa New Zealand Lisa and I spent a wonderful and very memorable week sailing between Portsmouth and Cornwall It was a magical trip where we benefited from Nick and Melisa s experience enthusiasm for sailing cooking and fantastic approach to learning By the end of the week we both felt competent with basic sailing skills which fuelled our imagination and appetite to get on the water more often Peter Halliwell Hampshire It sure was a great weekend and also a bit of a fun culture shock for a plastic boat skipper Start Prev 1 2 Next End Results 10 13 of 13 Back Pilot Cutter Charter Topsail Adventures offer skippered charter sailing holidays aboard Pilot
