  • Topsail Adventures Ltd - Skippers Log: Crikey! It’s nearly May
and occasionally Cowes but I d put my money on her in a drag race at the traffic lights Conjure that image if you please Yep and she doesn t need a lot of breeze to do it So in the gentle early stages where a new skipper learns what their charge will do this skipper has mostly been finding that he tends to get wherever seemed like a reasonable destination much earlier than he anticipated Which I suppose gives more time to enjoy the ambiance of the destination But we ve had a lot of fun doing it Hammering the 40 odd miles from Weymouth to Yarmouth in a shade over 4 5 hours was an early revelation apologies to anyone who found that day all too brief and the pleasures of running a boat that is compact enough to actually get alongside in Yarmouth or Buckler s Hard cannot be overstated The first Folkboat voyage of the season was a resounding success and my old friend Phil Beer seems to be happy with his new home from home too It s been very rewarding to teach Dayskipper on a proper boat for a change as well I now cringe to think of the comparisons with plastic yacht courses in the Canaries and the quality of teaching one can offer in those circumstances And yet not everything has changed I ve already had the pleasure of sailing with a lot of familiar faces with all bar one of my trips so far having at least two faces I know already So what can I say Yes I m very happy with this little rocket ship she really IS fast She s also well mannered handy and comfortable like it says on the tin and no that s not marketing

  • Topsail Adventures Ltd - Songs of Praise for Proper Boats
and get the whole thing over and done with if they could exploit the Achilles heel of all sailing vessels if they could sail to windward better and better then they could take home more shiny trinkets and have bigger hats than their friends These reckless nihilists had made one very important decision They decided that these races should only take place where the waters would be flat in those places that God had sort of sorted out by putting lots of land around them This gave them an artificial sense of reality In these flat waters fun could be had and then sleeping could be done ashore in a fluffy bed Thus all sorts of experimental crazy ideas could be tried out Sooner or later someone had a really bonkers idea Instead of providing power sensibly close to the rest of the boat they decided on a vertical approach They built lofty tall masts that would never stand up without sophisticated structures and fancy materials They cut down the number of sails in the name of efficiency but ended up with much bigger sails needing much bigger crews because they found they could go faster like that to windward They realised that as they weren t sleeping and living onboard and weren t carrying fish or cargo or passengers they could have much less volume and much less weight They realised that their boats might fall over without that weight so they concentrated it in the bottom of the boat Later they realised that they could hang it all below the bottom of the boat so long as they used fancy materials and complicated structures to do it They knew that these boats didn t stand a chance in the real world out there but they didn t care because they weren t going out there It was wanton some might say irresponsible because they didn t realise the example they were setting Before the bad stuff really set in there was one last problem to overcome Having had a rare old laugh flying in the face of all that s natural and got all that way to windward they realised they d have to turn round or they d end up in the world beyond Hurst Narrows So they did and were immediately bored with the lacklustre performance of their ship and annoyed to observe old fashioned vessels flying past them They decided that they must pep up the dull performance of their lofty ship Anathema for that was her name when the wind was behind her To do this they fitted her with a big balloon sail This only worked if they had a large crew of big fit people often from New Zealand mainly called Guy These men called Guy were obsessed with the sheets although they couldn t figure out quite what to do with them and therefore played with them continually Anathema was complete and in her environment she was great Soon everyone who

  • Topsail Adventures Ltd - How do you make a Pilot Cutter into a Folkboat?
find that they cannot resist Phil is an excellent tutor and as host he will entertain and provide workshops for musically minded and anyone with an eye to pick up new skills and techniques will benefit from time spent with him The aim of the sailing plan every day is to leave enough time to allow the wine and song to flow and to enjoy time ashore perhaps even in a welcoming pub There is a very informal attitude to the whole thing and impromptu song and playing is always a delight Phil will often work with all onboard to arrange a good tune or song that suits everyone and there is always an opportunity to strut your stuff with one of the country s foremost traditional musicians We don t limit ourselves to folk music either should the mood take us then Blues and Jazz or anything that comes to mind will be heard emerging from the boat Combine this with the well established traditions of Amelie Rose and you have an experience that cannot be beaten A typical day begins with breakfast and a chat about the day s sailing plan Usually we start at a sociable hour and weather and tide dependant there may be a song or a tune or too before we go We generally cover a good ish distance in a day but the accent is on visiting the prettier places and making time for music in the evening Imagine a fine anchorage after a tremendous day s sailing great food and plentiful bonhomie good conversation turning to song and as instruments comes out a world of musical variety is displayed as everyone shares their favourites and joins in splendid chorus This is genuinely what happens We think that Folkboat is the best traditional
