Joined by new guests David Juliette Al Kevin Clare and Katie we headed off across the bay for four days of fun around the Solent We had every kind of weather on the way and some fantastic sailing but the highlight was heading over to the IOW with all canvas aloft Better still local photographer Michael Angus caught us passing Hurst Spit will everything aloft so you can see what a lovely picture we made There s a film too which you can check out on Youtube More new friends joined us for our next weekend adventure up into the Solent to Newtown Creek one of our very favourite anchorages Guests Jim and Kate and Colin were then treated to the sail of a lifetime as The trip back was simply stunning With an F5 blowing from the North Amelie Rose roared out of the Solent and across Christchurch and Poole Bays We touched 9 2 knts at one point and were averaging 8 through the water The whole trip 20 miles from Newtown Creek to Poole entrance took only 2 5 hours Nick had the video camera aboard and you can watch a short video of the experience here The following weekend yielded no pictures at all as we were kept too busy changing sails Everything from topsails to 2 reefs and the spitfire jib got an airing in some of the most variable weather I ve seen for a while New friends Bob high side of 80 yrs Bridget and Paul and competition winners Max and Jake 20 yrs seemed to enjoy it all though A wide range of ages enjoying a wide range of conditions A fabulous first month was rounded off nicely with Amelie Rose s third visit to the St Georges Trophy Pilot Cutter Regatta

tidal gate at Hurst Narrows and so needed to be off sharpish I donned my hired wet weather gear and hurried up on deck to make sure that I didn t miss anything as some of the guests were already pulling off sail covers and looking at the resulting view with various degrees of bafflement We needn t have worried Nick and his crew were clearly seasoned hands at explaining the whole thing to beginners and were great at not only showing us how to do things but also at explaining why we were doing it I have to admit that a lot of the why stuff went straight over my head but it was great to be involved in setting everything up even if I didn t really understand what we were doing In what seemed like no time we d had another briefing about safety this time mainly to do with not falling overboard hoisted the huge mainsail and were off half motoring half sailing out of Poole Harbour After passing through the narrow entrance to Poole we soon had the front sails up and finally were sailing Amelie Rose is just incredible to sail She feels so big and solid and yet it seemed to me that we were tearing along even though the wind wasn t all that strong Nick kept us all involved firstly hoisting another sail the topsail this time and then showing us how to tack the boat as we were sailing into the wind This last caused a fair amount of hilarity as we ended up playing tug of war with each other during one tack with two groups of us pulling on opposite ends of what turned out to be the same rope it s quite difficult to tell Before long however we all got the hang of what to do and by the time lunch somewhat miraculously appeared we were even eliciting the occasional good tack from Nick With the lovely lunch consumed we soon were able to see the Needles and just about make out Hurst Narrows a small gap between the mainland and the Isle of Wight through which we were to sail All I can say is that it s a good job that we d practised our tacks as the next hour or so passed in a blur At times it seemed that we were going to be sailing right onto a shingle beach and then at the last minute it d be ready about and off we d go in the other direction Finally Nick announced that should do us and although to me it seemed like we d hit the castle at the end of Hurst spit sure enough we slid sort of diagonally into the rough patch of water which is the narrows itself Without pause for breath it seemed we d arrived off Yarmouth which was to be our destination for the night and we were then talked through the process of

  • Topsail Adventures Ltd - Fixing Boats in Exotic Locations - Amelie Rose’s Top 5 Cruising Destinations
East to Douarnenez in the South West the North Brittany coastline is dressed in spectacular scenery of jagged granite pink in some places sandy beaches and green hills rolling down to the sea Studded along this natural beauty are some of the Channel s most welcoming harbours for the French do love traditional sailing boats Our favourites include the ancient walled harbour town of St Malo the stunning Baie de Morlaix and the home of one of our favourite French Festivals Douarnenez What makes cruising this coastline win out over other favourites however is the chance to immerse ourselves in the wonderful Breton culture The language food and drink are all uniquely Breton and no trip is ever complete without sampling the lovely local cider says Nick Added to this we often get the chance to pop into our other cruising favourite the Channel Islands either on the way there or back so it really is the recipe for a perfect cruise If you d like to sample the best of Northern Brittany click here 3 Channel Islands Just a few miles from the French Coast the Channel Islands are packed with historical and navigational interest in almost equal measures Home of the infamous Swinge and the Alderney Race it s the perfect place to practice your pilotage under the tutelage of Yachtmaster Instructor Nick and there s still plenty to see and do if you d rather let the skipper take care of all that There s nothing quite like the sensation of raising Alderney after the Channel Crossing Being out of sight of land for a few hours puts one in touch with how mariners throughout history must have felt as the cry of Land Ho rings out on deck From this point onwards the islands are a delight For us St Peter Port in Guernsey is always a welcome break in the sailing giving us a chance to wonder round the shops and re provision before we head off to the true gems of the Islands Herm Sark and occasionally a visit to the only French Channel Islands of Les Iles Chausey Sark is our particular favourite though and we rarely miss an opportunity to stay for a whole day to explore this lovely island properly Fancy visiting the Channel Islands Click here for more details 4 Cornwall and Devon Coast We love the dramatic vistas and natural harbours of this granite coast From Dartmouth to the Helford the South Devon and Cornwall coastline is bristling with stunning places to visit As you ghost your way in from seaward some of the harbour entrances appear as nothing more than an hiatus in a tree lined cliff and this enhances the feeling of welcome as you round a turn in the river to be presented with the prettiness of Fowey the old worldliness of Newton Ferrers or the drama of Dartmouth Of course no trip to the West Country can ever be complete without wandering at least some

  • Topsail Adventures Ltd - Scilly Sailing: Fabulous or Fearsome?
Of course we re spoiled by having the type of boat that hundreds of years of traditional boat building decreed as perfect for the seas around the Scilly As a replica Scillonian Pilot Cutter Amelie Rose is designed from the keel up to handle the waters in and around these stunning Islands Perhaps this is why when we arrive we usually find a warm welcome amongst the locals and the local old salts a few of whom still recognise her heritage are happy to pass on their knowledge of the island waters This has helped us to understand that whilst there is no single safe haven protected from every type of nasty weather there is certainly a bolt hole somewhere around the islands that will proffer a safe mooring from any gale Armed thus with our Pilot s boat and our Pilot s knowledge we have so far managed to enjoy every single planned adventure to the Isles of Scilly even last June with its four unseasonal gales in just four weeks The Isles of Scilly cover a mere 30 square miles and yet each island has its own very individual character From the relative hustle and bustle of St Mary s to the quiet of St Agnes there s plenty of contrast to keep a holiday interesting Indeed Tresco even manages to pack two very different islands into one coastline The North is hilly gorse covered and might even be described as barren whilst the South fairly bursts with colour and flora That this abundance is packed into such a small area and that the islands boast not a single marina is at the heart of what we find so delightful about them A decent passage negotiated to arrive followed by leisurely movement from one anchorage to another soaking
