Bonallo Luxembourg http www sarahbonallo com I may be one of the biggest fans of Liz Marks and the Traditional Upholstery Workshop Just recently I completed my 9th week of class under Liz s mentorship This past June July I came back to the Workshop to learn how to upholster a deep buttoned Chesterfield loveseat I spent 3 weeks learning how or honing skills already acquired to build this amazing piece of furniture beginning with just the raw wood frame It was a big undertaking for sure But as in the previous 6 weeks of class that I d spent learning the skills taught in traditional upholstery it was an enjoyably valuable but wonderfully exhausting journey I took my first class at the Workshop in June of 2009 I was turned onto the class by an amazing upholsterer here in Chicago at the Chicago Antiques Market who had taken courses at the Workshop years ago Finding Liz s course online after picking the brain of the woman I met at the market I signed up immediately I took only 2 weeks of classes the first year I decided to take only a couple of weeks in order to give it a try After communicating with Liz online and discussing what my desires were for this initial undertaking I worked on a Victorian fireside chair which Liz provided for me because I was travelling from so far After taking the course for only a day I knew I was hooked I LOVED the craft of traditional upholstery immediately But it also may have been the setting The Old Piggery the old pig barn wonderfully updated to be an upholstery studio is part of a former horse farm that sits atop the tallest of a variety of rolling hills which ultimately roll into the coast in the distance It s a place that you want to spend your day with upholstery as the creative outlet It may also have been the opportunity to meet other people who were also driven to learn this craft and took the steps to make it happen people from around the area the UK and farther beyond Every week that I ve been in the course I ve met really interesting people some that have become wonderful friends After that first session I signed up almost immediately to come back for more I continued to go back each year at the same time of the year for 3 years During the second two week session I learned how to reupholster a modern wing chair a Parker Knoll I also learned how to build an ottoman which was upholstered inside and out I learned how to deep button while working on the lid to the ottoman In my third year of attendance at the Workshop I learned how to upholster a traditional armchair loveseat I didn t come back after that third session until I couldn t take it anymore and contacted Liz to see what else I
