    Distribution Facts and figures Type of Work Submarine Cable Replacement Client Southern Electric Power Distribution Duration 18 months Value 13million Project categories Trenchless techniques High voltage cable installation Onshore and offshore windfarms Marine works This project is the first subsea electrical installation under the Solent waterway for 40 years and will replace one of the three subsea cables which supplies residents and businesses on the Isle of Wight The cable previously in place which sits on the seabed is to be replaced with a new cable that will sit below the seabed The project involves laying the cable from Lepe in Hampshire to Thorness Bay on the Isle of Wight using a variety of installation techniques including Horizontal Directional Drilling on the island specialist marine vessels and equipment to cross the Solent and open cut techniques at Lepe The specialist marine team will complete the project in two phases the first phase will involve the installation of an 875 metre horizontal directional drill from Thorness Bay Isle of Wight out into the sea bed of the Solent The second phase will see the manufacture of a single length of bespoke cable which will be transported and installed between the two locations under the Solent using specialist divers and marine installation vessels This phase also involves excavations to install the cable on land and to pre locate the existing fluid filled cables which will be connected using fluid XLPE transition joints Cable jointing operations will be carried out under specially prepared environments This project represents a significant capital investment in the maintenance of the electricity infrastructure to the Isle of Wight Solent 132kV Submarine Cable Replacement Solent 132kV Submarine Cable Replacement Solent Directions void null class even map View project on map Contact VolkerInfra The Lancashire Hub Preston City Park Bluebell

  • Cambridge to Ryeford HDD - VolkerInfra
    completed using Horizontal Directional Drilling HDD Two separate bundles of three 180mm diameter and two 110mm diameter polyethylene PE ducts were installed horizontally separated by five metres to enable the later installation of HV cables The works entailed installing approximately 575m of installed pipes eight metres below the river bed To facilitate the drilling operation water was extracted from the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal under consent obtained by VolkerInfra from the Canal Trust In advance of the drilling phase the PE cable ducts were delivered in 12 metre lengths and fabricated on site using butt fusion welding The drilling operation was carried out within an environmentally sensitive area which necessitated specific consideration with regards to the environmental risks prevalent Conventional forward reaming was adopted to enlarge the bored hole During the drilling operation stiff clay was encountered which required the use of a drill motor A strict traffic management plan was enforced to control vehicle movements in and out of the site which required careful planning and co ordination Upon installation of the pipe bundles the cable ducts were subsequently proven and draw cords were installed within each duct to allow the future pull in of the HV cables by

    work Cable installation Client Electricity North West Limited ENWL Duration September 2012 October 2012 Roles and responsibilities Principal contractor Value 243 000 Project categories Marine works VolkerInfra set up transported and carried out the cable drum lift into the drum carriage and then winched it across the lake placed it into position and joined it up to existing cables The pulling process took eight hours and allowed for intermittent stoppages to attach the floatation system at 10 metre intervals The cable now provides electricity to homes at the remote Cumbrian village of Wasdale Head The homes had been without mains electricity for some time and had been relying on generators since a fault developed in the power cable under Wast Water ENWL initially hoped that a new power cable could be laid under the narrow lake side road leading to Wasdale Head However the discovery of dense rock meant this was abandoned so it was decided to replace the cable under the lake Thanks to constant communication between all parties successful project management and a well thought out design the logistically challenging project was successfully delivered both on time and to budget Wasdale 11kV cable replacement Wasdale 11kV Cable Replacement
