    transmission cables and potentially signals sent to the wind turbines from an onshore control centre The first step was for VolkerFitzpatrick to cut a trench for three 100mm cable ducts backfilling with sand and specialist recycled material and resurfacing as they went to minimise disruption for local people Laying the ducts took just over three months ending in mid March 2005 at which point VolkerInfra could move in and install the cables But work did not begin until it had suggested a valuable improvement to the original design Our expertise in installing cables meant we could reduce the number of joints in the design from the seven proposed to just four and also reduce the width of the ducts to a diameter of 100mm says VolkerInfra Contracts Manager Fred Mastop The insight almost halved the risk of faults Joints are by far the most vulnerable part of the connection When faults occur it is almost always at joints Mastop says The cost fell dramatically too with lower material costs and with only 36 connections needed rather than 63 the job connecting the cables fell to 24 man days from 42 This typical example of VolkerInfra value engineering was achieved thanks to its push and pull installation technique while winching from the far end cables were also pushed by half a dozen linear rollers every 400 metres or so thereby minimising strain These points were carefully chosen to help ease the cable round right angle bends In a far more delicate operation the fibre optic cable was installed in a 40mm diameter sub duct by floating it on a stream of air It starts vibrating on the airflow reducing friction to almost nothing On top of the technical challenges was the winter weather Bad weather is always a problem but VolkerInfra

    substations two owned by EDF Energy and the other owned by National Grid There were other physical constraints to consider too The team were working in a largely residential area moving staff and plant through narrow streets When drilling under the railway line the six person team needed to position some substantial machinery And then as if to add a new twist to an already challenging brief the route had to be changed after the planning phase Before we can do directional drilling under a railway we have to prove to Network Rail that there is no safety risk It is a very slow and difficult process explains VolkerInfra s Fred Mastop who managed the contract The original route proved unfeasible There were issues to do with consent because there were already some cables laid in the vicinity So we had to come up with a new route says Mastop We had to change around 70 of the route We had to plan this re routing design and build all at the same time We determined that there were three alternative routes the cable could take says Mastop One of them proved to be significantly more attractive than the others but it involved taking alternative railway crossings Under the new scheme the route would be the same for the first two kilometres Mastop explains However whereas the original plan involved drilling three holes installed with ducts carrying four cables under the railway the new one had three locations where two cables would cross the tracks in parallel and two more where three cables would make parallel crossings It was only slightly more expensive and there was no need to increase the cable lengths Mastop says But for all its advantages the new route still needed to pass through the Network

  • Ross on Wye HDD - VolkerInfra
    Species Regulation 2010 The crossing of the River Wye is to be crossed by means of Horizontal Directional Drilling HDD and shall be executed from within the floodplain VolkerInfra were appointed by the Electricity Alliance to undertake the HDD crossing operation The crossing of the river comprised a total of fourteen number bores in the region of 200 metre lengths separated by approximately six metre intervals The drillings were carried out from within the River Wye floodplain and in a rural area frequented by the public for recreation purposes as well as a number of species of high environmental value such as otters and water voles This meant that special consideration was required as far as noise emissions traffic movements and construction works were concerned to minimise disruption to the local flora and fauna habitat Working from within a floodplain also added further complications As part of the Environmental Agency consent granted to carry out the Horizontal Directional Drilling works works could only be carried out between the 16th of July and the 14th of October within the floodplain Outside of this period the risks of working within the floodplain were concerned too great Furthermore all machinery and plant located within the floodplain had to be mobilised on trailers to ensure that in the event of a flood and if safe to do so all equipment could be demobilised to higher ground to prevent pollution of the adjacent river This meant that constant monitoring of the River Wye water levels were carried out by the VolkerInfra team onsite as well as indirect communication with the Environmental Agency Flood Warning Department via the client Given the challenges which VolkerInfra had to face during the execution of this project all HDDs were successfully completed in advance of the Environmental Agency s consent
