  • RAF Kinloss Sea Outfalls - VolkerInfra
    base of three squadrons carrying out around the clock surveillance and search and rescue missions over the Atlantic Its 2 3km runway has an area of over 100 000 square metres which during the average year will collect around 65m litres of water All of it needs to be collected carefully cleaned and carried to the deep water channel of the Moray estuary to meet strict EU environmental regulations VolkerInfra s specialist expertise was called on in Summer 2006 by engineering firm AMEC which was committed to installing two underground outfalls to handle the waste water one was to be 484m long and 630mm in diameter and made of polyethylene alone while the other had to be clad in a steel outer sleeve with a diameter of 323mm and a length of 775m The construction was carried out in four stages taking just under three months The pipes were made up from sections on dry land holes were drilled the pipes were towed out to sea and pulled back into the holes and finally special nozzles known as diffusers and protection structures were constructed on the subsea ends Services included In house design and engineering trenchless techniques and marine pipeline

  • Sheringham Shoal Offshore Windfarm - VolkerInfra
    the crossing of the primary sea defence by means of 2 Horizontal Directional Drills In each of these drills a HDPE duct was installed with an outside diameter of 560mm PE100 SDR 11 These activities Phase 1 of the project were carried out over the winter of 2009 2010 In addition to Phase 1 VolkerInfra also assisted VSMC during the cable pulls Phase 2 of the project which was executed in autumn 2010 An important issue during the design and construction were the limitations with regards to the permits and allowable working windows For the installation of the ducts the VolkerInfra owned 250 ton drill rig was mobilised as well as the marine vessel MSC Ailsa with a 4 point mooring system and diving facilities including diving tanks The rig was positioned onshore whilst the marine vessel and the divers assisted the drill at the exit point offshore The HDPE ducts were butt welded onshore by VolkerInfra s own team Once a drilling was completed the HDPE duct was pulled into the sea connected to the drilling string ballasted with water and pulled into the borehole The HDD works were carried out during the winter months which led to additional requirements to safeguard the health and safety of our employees Client s representatives and the general public Special care also had to be taken to minimise the lost time owing to frozen equipment Phase 2 of the project was carried out during the autumn of 2010 Once again the weather was extreme for the time of year and precautions had to be taken to ensure the safety of all components of the project For the cable installation the VolkerInfra owned 40 ton pulling winch was mobilised At the offshore side a diving support vessel as well as several other support

  • Walney Offshore Windfarm Phase 1 - VolkerInfra
    an offshore substation by approximately 6 3km of 33kV internal array cable systems The offshore transformer platform substation will be situated in the middle of the windfarm and will be connected to the 400 132kV Heysham grid substation on shore through approximately 45km of 132kV submarine armoured cable and approximately 2 7km of underground cable Visser Smit Marine Contracting VSMC was awarded the interturbine cable and export cable installation contract VolkerInfra and VSH Marine assisted VSMC with the crossing of the sea defence the pull in of the cable and burial of the cable in the near shore area VolkerInfra installed the cable duct from the onshore joint bay crossing the sea defence up to about 300m on to the tidal flat The 560mm HDPE duct was built up in sections onshore using butt welding technology The sections were then towed onto the tidal flat placed in a pre excavated trench ballasted with concrete mattresses and backfilled One of the complicating factors was the crossing of the Barrow export cable which was in operation The cable was supported and a concrete tunnel was installed underneath the cable in which the PE duct was installed Another challenge was the route of the cable with an almost 90 0 curve Two VolkerInfra owned 40 ton pulling winches were used to pull in the HV cable Prior to the cable pulling the VSMC owned plough was pulled towards the end of the PE duct During the pull the friction of the cable was reduced using special VolkerInfra owned heavy duty cable rollers Although the time schedule was tight VolkerInfra and VSH Marine were able to install the duct and pull the cable with the minimum delay to the cable lay vessel Stemat Spirit Once the cable was pulled in the PE duct was
