    to the Black Mountains in Wales Late spring in the beech woods along the river Barle Valley about 15 minutes from us Because Exmoor is a little known area it is very free from crowds both on the roads footpaths and open moors Exmoor s three types of landscapes dramatic coastal hills and cliffs wide open moorland and sheltered valleys combes invite walks by all ages and fitness levels Dogs love Exmoor These are on the moor near Winsford Hill about 5 miles from us from a gentle stroll along a level path to take in the view and wildlife to a planned day long trek over open moorland down sheep grazed slopes and along rushing rivers The northern path of the perimeter path around Wimbleball Lake 2 miles from us Its famous areas such as the ancient Tarr Steps clapper bridge across the River Barle and the Valley of the Rocks near Lynton are a little busier but still worth a visit if you haven t seen them A variety of leaflets and books with suggested walks is produced We have some for our guests Visitor centres and other local shops also stock them Our nearest visitor centre is in Dulverton phone 01398 323841 The Exmoor National Park has a programme of guided walks throughout the year website http www exmoor nationalpark gov uk e g under events Very close to us are numerous paths e g round Wimbleball Lake over the open moor of Haddon Hill and in the valley of the River Hadeo We have produced a set of notes on local walks and we are pleased to suggest other routes Our two cottages offer high comfort bases whatever the weather or season if you come home hot then sit outside and admire the sunset with a

    seeing another soul Most rivers need to be waded and a wading staff is advised the banks are tree lined and the steep valleys can provide sightings of deer fox buzzard dipper and other species Early mornings can be the best time to spot the wildlife Brown trout fishing is close at hand through the Dulverton Angling Club www lancenich f9 co uk beats are also available on the Little Exe Haddeo and Barle Membership is very reasonably priced and available through the local gun and tackle shop Lance Nicholson s www lance nich f9 co uk They will also advise on other fishing including salmon available through the shop What they don t know you won t need Spectacular scenery and truly wild brown and sea trout fishing can be found on the East Lynn at Lynmouth Daily permits are available from the National Trust at Watersmeet www nationaltrust org uk watersmeet again very reasonably priced This is a precipitous river with pools and slow glides interrupted by tumbling falls There are a number of named and signed deep sea trout holding pools I have included a few pictures to tempt you to bring your rods we have plenty

    location within the unspoilt Exmoor National Park and its un manicured style the garden is visited by an interesting variety of birds and animals This is looking towards the right side of the garden with the old farmyard behind this barn A rough stone walkway leaves from the garden up into our largest field whose name on the 1850 tythe map has been used for this cottage Guests are welcome to walk and picnic in this field when it is not being grazed by sheep Wild red deer are sometimes seen in this field and there are fine views west and north west towards Dunkery Beacon Exmoor s highest point Part way along this walkway is an entrance to our Orchard Field which is dedicated to the enjoyment of the guests from both cottages e g quiet relaxation maybe with a pair of binoculars we have an abundance of bird life around us a book or some appropriate sustenance or just gentle strolling There is also a small secluded and very sheltered south facing area tucked below the gable end of this cottage which catches the morning sun Our page outside shows more photos of the cottage s immediate surroundings

    known National Parks The two self catering cottages are 100 metres from the lane and have their own quiet car parking We are rural surrounded by our own land panoramic views and unspoilt countryside Three of our fields border the cottages The most likely disturbance will be one of our many owls or some other wildlife We have a wealth of bird life around us Our steep field which is actually called Toads Breech on the 1850 tythe map The highest field shown above giving its 1850 tythe map name to the larger cottage Toads Breech has distant views north west to Dunkery Beacon Exmoor National Park s highest point This summit has wide open heather moorland with views across the Bristol channel to Wales excellent walking country and some of the UK s most varied scenery within a small area Guests are very welcome to walk in the fields and visit our lovely sheep If you have a dog we have a dedicated fenced field where no animals are kept Orchard Field below has garden furniture in order you can sit and gaze at the amazing view read a book or just chill out Orchard field A distant horizon
