    concern WorkplaceSafetyAdvice 8 Feb 16 11 08 AM I work in a small Ford connect Van and for 3 hours a day 3 days a week I have to be in the back of the van emptying anything between 12 25 coin boxes a day into coin bags with the Max of 3 000 coins in each box can be very heavy I can not sit up straight in the van and my back I slightly arched sitting normally in the van The van itself in the back has a safe taking up half the space anyway so space is tight I have recently started to get constant lower back pain since Christmas When asked my employer for the health and safety report for working with heavy objects in a confined space the simply laughed and said well how would we fill the rest of ur day for u How do I stand As the pain is getting uncomtortable now Whitehog 7 Feb 16 the g p to the A and E with a suspected spinal injury on Friday He can hardly feel his toes and is numb and it s getting worse after doing his community service which is almost complete His job was dragging 100kg sacks at a local community project tgat sells the donated items He is just about 20 yrs old All he can think about his completing his C S programme but the sad reality is this once fit young man may have been given a life sentence of being numb from the abdomen down and it s not improving over the weekend the symptoms are intensifying and he s scared This is 2016 this is the U K I expected much more from our PROVIDERS of such projects to be completely and utterly 100 on the H and S Policy and procedures at this stage any supervisor should know these legislations like second nature I will also mention here that lots of people with special needs attend the project to gain skills I will be requesting a ccomplete and thorough investigation into that project and what us actually being allowed to be performed as jobs and or tasks for these VULNERABLE people who due to the nature of their status are UNLIKELY to complain That in itself is an abuse of POWER This is an absolute shambles of a situationand it takes a serious incident for anyone to even bother to look the project over and or pop in to do spot checks Certain people gravitate to specific jobs and they are not always for the right reasons So even support staff and lower management need to be personality tested for the traits of any disorder of personality They are very accurate and would ensure at least some protection for the vulnerable in our society One does not throw a large amount of vulnerable people in one building and let it continue to function with nobody answering to the laws and legislation that is COMPULSORY for everyone else overseeing such projects they should be scrutinised more closely if anything This community based project is working closely with the local authority and somebody is turning a dead ear and a blind eye WELL not now because I am making it MYbusiness to bring it to everyone s attention and I will firstly be requesting a visit from the health and safety officer for the county over to see with their own eyes just exactly what is being expected of these people behind the doors closed to the general public ladyDee 24 Jan 16 4 06 PM I have to advice would be help full guys Our Response All employees should be given health and safety training As a minimum new employees must be given an induction which should cover topics such as how to report an accident how to respond in the event of a fire how to use equipment safely who to contact if there is a health and safety issue and how to find information relating to health and safety In addition employees should be trained in the precautions that they need to take when working with equipment or jobs that have significant risks associated with them If the accident happened at work it should be recorded in the company accident book If your workplace does not have an accident book you should write out brief details of the accident and injuries send them to your employer and keep a burgo 20 Jul 15 12 11 AM hi i just wondered how you come to the conclusion that nothing over 25kg should be lifted As far as iam aware there is actually no limit set as to what weight you can legally lift if its mid waiste then i thought it was 25kg according to the HSE risk assessment but you can carry more depending on the companies dynamic risk assessment is this right or not matt 14 Jul 15 10 07 AM sam this is a tricky question as if you are still on probation then you may need to re assess whether this is the job for you given that the job involves heavy lifting as a pre requisite and this is listed in your contract However as specified in the article if your employer does not seem concerned about the issue you could point out that all employers have responsibilities to their workers under manual handling regulations introduced in 1992 Also if you do suffer an injury or feel ANY pain while lifting or landling an object stop immediately and speak to your employer Make sure that the incident is recorded because it could be some hours later before you realise the true extent of the damage You might also want to visit your GP if this is becoming and issue as you do not want any further repercussions Also if you have burned yourself on the equipment this needs to be reported and recorded either through HR or directly with your employer Should you need any further Hi I recently started my first job and it s hard going I ve told my employer I have back problems and he told me it was bs So he s now told me I have to lift things he tells me to I ve had to lift 3 10kg bags of meat 20kg or bones 20 litre drums of oil and heavy hot trays which I ve burnt myself on due to the weight I ve told him ill always attempt to lift items but I may not always be able to As of the slots where the grille pan should sit are bent making it difficult to pull out This along with the fact that for me at 5ft 4 iniches it is actually above my head I have told the management that I will not use it as I would be lifting the pan laden withhot food above my head One member of staff pulled out the grille pan with hot toasted teacakes on it Because of the bent rails it stuck she pulled the pan hard and all the hot contents hit he in the face I considered she was lucky the food was not cheese on toast as this could have caused her serious injury I believe the management floor I recently was seen on camera lifting 1 6 times above my head as a weight They say it s gross misconduct as it s against health safetly If that is so surely I shouldn t of been aloud to take where the trollies were but I was always given the answer that the manager is slow at getting these things and costs My feet then started to hurt so I changed from boots to wellies which didn t help so asked if I could wear my own they said no but then I was walking in my shed in just socks until I went to the chiropodist and he said I should quit my job I therefore quit In 4 weeks no one was concerned whatsoever about my feet complaints I was carrying buckets of 17kg up and down a concrete yard over 100m repetitively everyday in steel toed boots We had been on a manual handling course so we re carrying them correctly there was just lack of equipment I then spoke to the manager after who said they weren t necessarily going to provide trollies and it wasn t high risk Even though we were doing a load of other jobs using the same muscles If I had been made aware of the risks I would have known to stop straight away with the pain and wouldn t have done it at all if the equipment was never going to be provided I am out of a job because I thought it was my fault but actually it was due to their lack of duty of care Is there anything I can do now I am suffering from repetitive strain injuries

  • Legal Minimum Temperature in a Warehouse?
    big laundrette as a cleaner and I m told I have to Wear a safety helmet at all times even in areas I don t have to wear one and as being a laundrette the tempture can get very hot in their I work 8 hours a day with one 30 minbreak I m only alould to remove my helmet on my break only and all I seem to get is headaches all the time in their because of it what type of rights do I have on this because its getting to the point when I m going to have to give the job up Davey 7 Jun 15 1 57 PM Hi I work for one of the UK s biggest diy chains I was on tge shop floor of the mini warehouse as a customer advisor Due to multiple knee surgeries three on the left knee for pvns with fourth impending and one on the right for osteoarthritis I have been put on the checkouts They have asked me to be at the front of the checkout to welcome the customer walk round to the checkout point scan the custoners items through which sometimes does require walking round thr trolley and sometimes lift objects to individually scan every item as the company requires I have obtained a stool that I sit on at the front of the checkout whilst waiting on customers I sometimes take the stool round to the checkout point to sit to I told my employers that I sometimes get too sore at the knees to walk round the checkout all the time which was met at some dismay by the deputy manager but I wouldnt back down The stool is uncomfortable and doing 8 hour shifts with 30 min breaks doesnt exactly ease things off any Sitting at the checkout which is at the exit when the doors open the wind can sometimes be ridiculous bringing in the cold You want customers to keep you busy but you dont want them to leave because it gets to cold I have a vest and ajumper under my uniform which is a long sleeve t shirt and a body warmer and I still feel the cold Thisis meant to be summer so I m certainly not looking forward to winter The cold does go for my knees causing sometimes significant ache Some days are a real struggle Is there anything I can do or someone I can speak to about help taking action as there is no union and HR is pointless in going too as if you complain you get the feeling you are getting looked down at for not being a company person Cheers in advance for any information Diycheckoutguy 1 Jun 15 9 02 PM Jim I m afraid not Under the Working Time Directive which applies to most adult workers you are entitled to one rest break of 20 minutes if you are employed for more than six hours a day Payment for these breaks is at the discretion of your employer There is no legal ruling to say your employer should have to pay you for your break You don t say what your work is but as specified in the article If you feel that the temperature in the warehouse is unacceptable then you have every right to ask for it to be raised Use the guidelines in the article as your basis and find out what the current temperature is If it is significantly less than 13 degrees Celsius then you will
