  • Tory Thurrock MP says 'gridlock' in Thurrock last week should be 'death knell' for proposed new Thames crossing | Yellow Advertiser
led to gridlock on Thurrock s road network It brought into focus exactly why residents of Thurrock are nervous about having another crossing on their doorsteps While the intent of any new crossing is to alleviate congestion many of my constituents are concerned that locating another crossing in Thurrock will simply add congestion on our roads The gridlock lasted all day until late at night By way of illustration I left Westminster at 8pm and arrived at Rainham at approximately 9pm The remaining three miles of my journey took two hours My assistant left the office at 5pm to travel 10 miles and ended up abandoning his car after four hours She continued Any new crossing must satisfy three criteria It must alleviate congestion on the Dartford Crossing it must not add to pressure on the A13 and M25 and it must not add to congestion on Thurrock s local road network It is why I have consistently argued that any new crossing should be located further to the east It is however quite clear that the traffic conditions on Thursday ought to sound a death knell to Highways England s favoured option Mrs Doyle Price s office said it would release Mr Jones reply to residents as soon as it was received Share this story Other Stories by Charles Thomson Man dead and teen girl in life threatening condition after Barking accident A13 partially closed and causing severe delays A YOUNG man has been killed in an accident on the A13 in Barking The victim believed to be Duke of Kent visits Basildon and Southend s pathology service THE DUKE of Kent visited Basildon this week to open a pathology lab Basildon and Southend ho UPDATE Man charged with two counts of attempted murder over Basildon incident A MAN

us I don t think it will impact Basildon adversely but it will make us much more attractive to businesses with the motorways and the roads to Europe Essex Council has also come out in support of the scheme claiming it has potential to drive economic growth and create around 5 000 jobs Tory leader David Finch said The importance and urgency of proceeding with a new lower Thames crossing cannot in the view of Essex County Council be overstated We are delighted that this Government is now moving forward swiftly on this issue with a clear preference However Tory MP Stephen Metcalfe for South Basildon and East Thurrock said he was disappointed that Government was proceeding with plans to build the crossing in Thurrock He said I am very disappointed but unfortunately not surprised that Highways England is recommending a new crossing in Thurrock Over the last five years my colleagues and I have made the case that the Government should widen the scope for a new Thames crossing and look further east or west towards London for a solution Unfortunately whilst these options have merit Highways England has rejected them because they are too far from the existing crossing to have an impact on congestion Whilst I am unhappy with the decision and continue to oppose the principle of a new crossing in Thurrock we now need to engage in the process and get our views heard I would strongly encourage everyone to get involved in the consultation and make their views known Share this story Other Stories by Charles Thomson Man dead and teen girl in life threatening condition after Barking accident A13 partially closed and causing severe delays A YOUNG man has been killed in an accident on the A13 in Barking The victim believed to
