  • Council defends possible axe of Community Panel meetings, as opposition says residents will be 'shut out of democracy' | Yellow Advertiser
waste budget and Wat Tyler Country Park handed over to a trust He said Everything is under review It s nothing more sinister than that The council can t continue to deliver services on the level that it has done in the past People tell me that they re not as effective as others would make out so the idea of reaching out to the public is to see how beneficial they really are There is a real cost to the taxpayer with all this stuff However Labour and UKIP have claimed the meetings played a vital role in keeping members of the public engaged in and informed about local democracy Labour leader Gavin Callaghan and UKIP leader Linda Allport Hodge both said it was especially concerning that the council had suspended the meetings just as it launched a consultation into its proposed Local Plan which sets out how local land should be allocated for development until 2034 Cllr Allport Hodge said It is worrying particularly as we ve got one of the biggest issues facing the borough the Local Plan and the concerns residents will surely have about the infrastructure and so on There are some big issues going on and one of the best places to engage residents is at the community panels So I am wholly against it They obviously don t want to take to the residents That s clear Look at the consultation over the Dunton Garden Suburb 84 per cent said no and here we are and it s in the Local Plan It s not an administration that can say hand on heart that they are interested in listening to the residents Because they clearly are not Cllr Callaghan said the meetings in his Pitsea North West ward cost roughly 5 000 per year to run which he urged the council to ring fence He said The Pitsea community panel meeting remains the best attended community meeting in the borough with as many as 50 local residents coming to the meetings on a quarterly basis to grill council officers the police and local councillors on a range of topics It is a vital community asset and a great platform for the council to engage with its residents A Basildon Council spokesman agreed that the Pitsea meetings has been an important forum but added Council officials are concerned that not all members of the community are attending and are therefore not being heard In particular young people need to have a voice The council said it was meeting with panel representatives to explore alternative ways to effectively engage the community Share this story Other Stories by Charles Thomson Man dead and teen girl in life threatening condition after Barking accident A13 partially closed and causing severe delays A YOUNG man has been killed in an accident on the A13 in Barking The victim believed to be Duke of Kent visits Basildon and Southend s pathology service THE DUKE of Kent visited Basildon this week
