  • INTERVIEW: Financial 'storm' could axe milions from waste collection budget, warns Basildon Council leader | Yellow Advertiser
    1 per cent per year until 2020 is expected to cost Basildon Council another 24million in resources Cllr Turner warned Next year I ve got 350 000 to save The next year it s about 3 1million then 6 9million and then 9million That s the storm that s approaching It s huge Prepare for a discussion on waste recycling and black sacks We are very proud to say we are giving weekly service on black sacks I m not sure we are going to be able to do that in the future We have guarded it We have really nurtured it But that s the sort of magnitude you re talking about On that one I can probably save millions On the Towngate that s still a big cost but you re talking hundreds of thousands rather than millions Cllr Turner told residents not to panic about the future of the public owned and subsidised theatre saying The Towngate will not be closed It s just under review We ve just put a million pounds of investment into that facility Unless something absolutely dramatic hits our finances beyond what we know it s not going to happen However he confirmed the council may no longer be able to manage Wat Tyler Country Park saying We may have to look at just giving that to a trust to run Basildon s George Hurd Centre Pitsea s The Place and the Laindon Activity Centre could also be outsourced like the Billericay Day Centre which was taken over by the town council last year Cllr Turner said Government cuts had really made a dent in our 30 year business plan We had hoped to start paying off some debt but now we won t be able to He said chancellor George Osborne s decision to only award councils half of the business rates they collect was insufficient mitigation He said At the moment we are looking at only 50 per cent of rates being refunded We want 100 per cent If we get that it s a different ball game That would make a big difference I m hopeful to be honest They ve talked about it They ve made all the right noises I m hoping that s still just waiting to be announced Cllr Turner said that although he was concerned for the future of some services he believed Basildon s council officers were among the best in the country He said There are difficult tough decisions to be made but if you look at our past record we ve not done that badly I think other councils up and down the country are going to be harder pressed than us Related articles Basildon residents face more than 50 council tax hike if plans go ahead Share this story Other Stories by Charles Thomson Man dead and teen girl in life threatening condition after Barking accident A13 partially closed and causing severe delays A YOUNG man has been killed in

  • Basildon residents face more than £50 council tax hike if plans go ahead | Yellow Advertiser
    is necessary but will not cover the decrease in funding News of the proposed hike followed announcements by Essex Police and Essex Council that they would seek to up their council tax precepts this year Essex Police has now approved an increase of 4 95 per year for a Band D property Essex Council s proposals are for a 1 99 per cent increase on its precept plus an extra 2 per cent demanded under Tories new Social Care Tax A Band D property would have to pay an extra 43 38 per year for the two charges Cllr Turner said of Basildon Council s suggested increase The decision is not one we propose lightly However we need to explore all avenues available to us to protect key services Basildon UKIP leader Linda Allport Hodge accused Government of passing losses accrued by its own financial mismanagement onto local councils She said We find it abhorrent that basically local councils are going to take a major hit by the Government and all the while we are paying out huge costs on EU legislation compliance and of course the foreign aid budget However Cllr Allport Hodge said that while she disagreed with central Government policy the council s own obligation was to balance its books which the proposed budget would achieve She said At the end of the day it s a difficult call because if we were to opposed it it would be held up as evidence of our total lack of financial acumen and inability to manage a whelk stall Share this story Other Stories by Charles Thomson Man dead and teen girl in life threatening condition after Barking accident A13 partially closed and causing severe delays A YOUNG man has been killed in an accident on the A13 in
